Enlisted as a Private on Aug. 18,1861 upon President Lincoln's first call for volunteers. Company A, 1st Ohio Infantry Regiment. Fought at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge and other battles. Promoted to Full Corporal on Nov.2, 1863 and Full Sergeant on May 1, 1864. Mustered out Company A, 1st Infantry Regiment, Ohio on Aug. 15, 1864.

He was born November 12th, 1840 in Ross co, Ohio. He enlisted August 9th, 1861 in the Ohio Volunteers Inf, at the age of 20. He was promoted to Full Corporal on October 1, 1861. He died September 20th, 1863 age 22 in Battle of Chickamauga, Tenn. He is buried in the Veterans Circle in Ross Co, Ohio.
He was older brother to Robert S Speaks who was also in the Civil War.

I have a copy of my g.g.g.Grandfather's civil war diary. He was from Gilead, Wood County, Ohio. His wife, Lucinda, is my name sake. I also have copies of letters he wrote to her. He was in the Drum corps from May 7, 1864 until he died in the Confed. N.Carolina Salisbury Prison in December 1864. He wrote in his journal every day up until he died.
He was first in Co. I, Regt. 144 O.N.G., under Capt John McKee, then in Company B under Capt. Black
