Lewis Job Egbert - Captain |
L.J.Egbert was the son of Captain Job Egbert,a veteran of 1812.He was a cousin of U.S.Grant.He lived in Georgetown,Brown Co. Ohio.He was a carpenter/builder in the area.Also raised Morgan horses and tobacco on his farm.The horses were sold to customers as far away as New Orleans.He was Married to Mathilda Waterman,they had four children.Two sons,Jerome Buckner,and Corydon also served in the war.Another son,Soloman and a daughter,Annie.At the beginning of the war,he was ordered by the governor of Ohio to raise and equip a company of Infantry.At age 48 he enlisted as a private,was later Captain .Georgetown was hit by Morgans raid.His wife died as a result.His home looted,farm and business destroyed.He moved his young children to live with relatives in Claremont Co.Later moving to LaSalle Co.Illinois.His letters home reveal a man who believed in his duty to the Union,yet had compassion for the rebels as well.One of his good friends after the war was a former Confederate Captain by the name of Fitzgerald,from Alabama.Captain Egbert is buried in LaSalle Co. Illinois,where he had made his home.

Married: Sally Ann Stedman, on 8/4/1853- His Parents: Joseph Grant, Rebecca Moore- Enlisted, 9/12/1861. Batavia, Ohio
Mustered in as Private. Was taken Prisoner at New Hope Church, Georgia, May 27th, 1864. Taken to Andersonville Prison, Georgia. Transferred to Florence Stockade, Florence, South Carolina. Prison records show he was a sergeant at the time of his being taken prisoner. He died,1/6/1865 of starvation. He is buried at Florence Stockade and has a stone with his name on it, but it is unclear if he is actually buried with his stone or in one of the mass graves there on the site. All remaining prisoners were paroled and out of Florence by Feb. 1865, one month after his death.

Jacob was my great-grandfather, apparently 16 years old when he enlisted.It seems his younger brother, George, also enlisted in Sept. 1861.Jacob was taken prisoner at Chickamauga.
