Joseph Bruff - Lt. Colonel
Joseph Bruff was Captain of Company A, so elected by the men he recruited and enlisted. He was promoted to Major of the Regiment in Feb.1864, and Lt. Col. in 1865. I am working on his letters as well as biographies of the men of Company A.

b:3-29-1839 d:1-17-1914 Newton, Kansas, buried Greenwood cemetery Newton.James moved with his family to ohio at the age of twelve years where he remained until the opening of the Civil War. First he enlisted in what was was known as the 'Ohio Squirrel Hunters.' He later enlisted in Co. C, 125th Ohio Volunteers in September 25, 1862 which was known throughout the war as 'Opdyke's Tigers.' The regiment was a part of the Army of the Cumberland. He served most of the time as color guard and was twice wounded, once at Chattanooga and again at Resaca. He was discharged at the close of the war and resided near Mecca, ohio, until 1871 when he came to Kansas and settled on a farm in Marion county. In 1889 he and his family moved to Newton and engaged in the mercantile business. Children James, Sam, Roy, Iva and Lillian.
