Formerely part of Manigault's Batt'n SC Vol's and subsequently consolidated with the 9th Batt'n SC Infantry to form 26th SC Infantry. Only two CMS cards were found. He enlisted on 21 April 1862 in Marion, SC. in the unit commanded by his father in law.

My 3rd great-grandfather John Mahaffey was only 15 when he enlisted in July of 1861. He served the southern Confederacy faithfully until he and his brave comrades surrenderd on April 9 1865 at Appomattax Court House. He returned home to Kershaw County, SC. He passed away of natural causes on January 10, 1910. I visit he and his wifes resting place often to tidy up and make sure that the confederate flags i put on his grave still stand. I will never forget what he and my other confederate ancestors sacrificed for their independence. May all of the Confederate dead rest in peace for eternity

Thomas was 20 years old when he joined on 29 Jun 1861 at Darlington, Darlington Co. SC in Capt James L Coker's Co. 2nd Regt SC Vols. These men served in the 5th 6th 9th SC Inf and Palmetto Regt. SC Sharpshooters. Thomas's career ended on 31 March 1862 when a mini ball shattered his arm at the battle of Seven Pines. He was medically discharged 23 Aug 1862. He died from complication in 1866. He is distantly related to my on my mother's side

George was born in Armenia, Chester County SC. He was about 25 years old when he enlisted at Summerville, SC on 15 May 1861 in [1st] Company E 6th SC Infantry. he died in battle on 20 Dec 1861 at Dranesville, Fairfax, Virginia. He was our 3rd cousin 4x removed

John was born 15 March 1828. He was enlisted at Columbia by Col. Preston for 2 years in 2nd Co E 6th SC Infantry. aka [Chester Guards] He was serving in Jinkins Brigade, James Division, Longstreet's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He was killed in battle on the 29th of August 1862 at the battle 2nd Manassas while defending his country from the invading forces. His body is still there in an unmarked grave. A memory stone was placed for him at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence Co SC. He had 5 cards in his archival file. May God rest his soul. Deo Vindice.

Abner Enlisted at Darlington, SC on 29 June 1861. In James L. Coker's 2nd SC Vol's which became Co. G 9th SC Infantry Regt. Abner then served with Co. E 6th SC Infantry. He was wounded in the right wrist while with Beatton's Brigade in Northern Virginia. He surrendered with his unit at Appomattox

He was a 26 y/o farmer from Darlington County, SC. Alexander enlisted 21 July 1862 at Columbia, SC in Capt James Lide Coker's Co E. 6th SC Infantry. Sworn in by Col. Preston for three years. He would be dead in two months. His unit was engaged at Sharpsburg/ Antietem , Marlyand. He was wounded on the 17th and died the following day at the farm of Israel Smith's farm.
His wife Susan M. Byrd filed a claim for settlement with the War Dep. and received a settlement of $97.63 cents

Uzell also found spelled Uzrell was born in 1833 in rural Hartsville District, Darlington Co. SC. The 1860 census shows him as 24 y/o living in aforesaid county. He enlisted 21 July 1862 and mustered at Columbia; SC. enlisted by Col. Preston for 2 years or the war. He has 30 cards in his archival file. 10 June 1863 he is sick in the hospital at Jerusalem. 14 Sept 1862 he is on wounded furlough from the battle of South Mountain. Returning to his unit he is in the battle of Fredericksburg, Suffolk and Chattanooga where he falls into the hands of the enemy. He is sent to the military prison at Louisville, Ky and on 9 Nov 1863 he is sent to Camp Morton at Indianapolis, Illinois where he died of pneumonia on 28 Dec 1863. He is buried at Green Lawn Cem. in that city.

John was born 24 May 1841 in Darlington Co. SC. He has 13 items in his archival file. The 1860 census finds him in aforesaid county at age 20. He enlisted 29 Jun 1861 at the Darlington Court House, enlisted by Capt. Coker into 2nd Co E 6th SC Infantry. His first fight was at Dranesville under J.E.B. Stuart. He was engaged in most major battles including Seven Pines on 1 June 1862 where he was severely wounded in his elbow. Note that the fight at Seven Pines the regiment lost 52% of its 521-man strength either killed or wounded. He was discharged by the executive board at Columbia on 7 Jan 1863. He died 13 Feb 1927 and is buried in that county in the Grove Hill Cem. He was the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

Samuel was born 17 Nov 1842 in Darlington County, South Carolina. Enlisted 29 June 1861 at Darlington, by Capt. James L Coker. His company is assigned to Bratton's Brigade 6th SC Infantry. He was sick several times but was not injured. His archival records are comingled with a relative named L. D O'Neal who was in the same company. Battles: Dranesville, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Knoxville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Trenches, Seven Pines, 2nd Manassas, & Gainsville. He died 21 July 1935. He was the last surviving member of that company.

He elects to be paid for his leave. 12 Feb. 1864 on furlough. He is at Richmond Va. where he is shot in both shoulders by mini ball. He is with Bratton's Brigade. He is sent on sick furlough for 40 days to Dove's Depot Darlington Co SC. on 25 August 1864.
He is paroled on 9 April 1865 at Appamattox.

John and his brother James E. enlisted at Darlington SC on 29 June 1862 in [2nd] Co. E 6th SC Infantry. Enlisted by Capt Coker. John was shot in the thigh and severely wounded at battle of Seven Pines. He dies of his wounds on 5 July 1862 in CSA hospital # 12 at Richmond Va.. His effects amount to $1.00. His father files claim and is paid $189.33 cents. John did not marry and leaves no children.

Pvt. Isaac Newton Gaston, the 4th of seven sons of John B. and Mary 'Polly' [née McFadden] Gaston, was born Jan.25th 1837 in the bounds of Cedar Shoals, the ancestral home of his American Revolutionary ancestors, in Chester County, South Carolina. Isaac graduated from South Carolina College in 1856 with a B.A. degree and later studied law with the Hemphill & Gaston law firm in Chester, S.C.

In April 1861, Isaac enlisted as a Private in F Company, 6th South Carolina Infantry in Columbia, S.C. His older brother, J. Lucius Gaston was elected to be Captain of Company F; known as 'Calhoun Guards' and made up of men from Chester, Fairfield, York and a few from Lancaster Counties.

On July 10th, 1861, the 6th South Carolina Infantry was ordered from Columbia, South Carolina to Richmond, Virginia to join the Confederate Army of the Potomac. During the 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) July 16th through July 22nd, Private Isaac Gaston was wounded and sent to a military hospital near Fairfax Station, Va. to be treated. On Sept. 1st 1861, Private Gaston died of those wounds at the age of 24 years.

About nine months later, during the battle at Seven Pines outside Richmond, Virginia, Private Isaac Gaston’s two brothers: Capt. Joseph Lucius Gaston & Pvt. William Hall Gaston were mortally wounded and died on May 31st 1862.

Born on April 28th 1829, Joseph Lucius Gaston, the 3rd of seven sons of John B. and Mary 'Polly' [née McFadden] Gaston, grew up in the bounds of Cedar Shoals, the ancestral home of his American Revolutionary ancestors, in Chester County, South Carolina. Pvt. William Hall Gaston, 5th of seven sons born to John B. and Polly [née McFadden] Gaston, was born on January 13th 1839 at Cedar Shoals in Chester County, South Carolina. Following in the footsteps of his older brothers, William enlisted April 1861 in 6th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry and assigned to 2nd Co. F. By the spring of 1862, the 6th S.C. Infantry were serving faithfully and honorably with the Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of beloved General Robert E. Lee. There they had fought at Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredricksburg; during the Battle of Seven Pines outside Richmond, Virginia, Pvt. William Hall Gaston was mortally wounded and died on May 31st 1862 at the age of 23. His older brother, Capt. Joseph Lucius Gaston was also killed on that day at the same battle.

Robert Hemphill, a son of David and Jane Wilson [née Brice] Hemphill, was born on October 11th 1840 in Chester County, South Carolina. Robert was educated at South Carolina College and planned to study the law.

When the war broke out in April 1861, Robert enlisted as a Private in F Company, 6th South Carolina Infantry in Columbia, S.C. His brother-in-law, J. Lucius Gaston was elected to be Captain of Company F; known as 'Calhoun Guards' and made up of men from Chester, Fairfield, York and a few from Lancaster Counties.

On July 10th, 1861, the 6th South Carolina Infantry was ordered from Columbia, South Carolina to Richmond, Virginia to join the Confederate Army of the Potomac. During the Battle of Seven Pines outside Richmond, Virginia, Private Robert Hemphill was severely wounded and died on June 13th 1862. His remains were returned to Chester, South Carolina with the help of Rev. John Hemphill Simpson and buried alongside his family at Hopewell Reformed Presbyterian Churchyard cemetery. Private Robert Brice Hemphill was in the 21st year of his age.

William made it to Virginia but as far as I can tell, never saw action. The 6th was in reserve at the first battle of Manassas so he likely sat that one out. In October, it seems the army was camped near Germantown Va.
William must have caught some sickness in camp and pasted away and I can only assume he's buried there in an unmarked grave.

Derived from family history, enlisted and served in Company 'K', 6th South Carolina Infantry. Fought in Second Mannasis (Bull Run), and was wounded at Chinn's Ridge.

Reese Was born in Bennetsville, Marlboro District SC. He was about 25 when he enlisted 21 Jul 1862 at Columbia, SC by Col Preston. He suffered several serious medical conditions and survived. He was with Bratton's Brigade in the fight around Petersburg Va. when he was shot in the spine. Admitted to hosp 20 June 1864 and died 28 June. His wife Jane D Wiggins filed claim on 7 Nov 1864. Remarks on his CMR Born Marlborough. We are related by marriage.
