Many of his letters are photocopied there.
Son of John Carothers 1777-1854
Moved to Dallas County, Alabama sometime after 1870 and became a Pastor/Reverend at Valley Creek Presbyterian Church.
He passed away on March 30th 1886 and is buried at his church.
He was my 4th Great Granduncle…

William Henry Edwards - Captain
|
My uncle wrote a history of my Great Grandfather, Capt. Bill Edwards in three volumes. Very interesting reading, a lot of it consisting of his personally written memoirs. He tells of many battles in elaborate detail, including a particularly gruesome tale about the Battle of the Crater, in which he used his sword to personally dispatch dozens of Yankees until his pants were 'so stiff with blood he could barely walk'. To his dying day he refused to wear any blue clothing because it was a 'Yankee color'. He passed away on August 9th, 1920.

Hiram C McCully - Private
|
Hiram was born in SC about 1827. Married Mary McCammon daughter of Nathanial & Elizabeth Sleeker McCammon before 1850. They had a large family of eight children. Hiram joined 5th SC State Troop at Rich Hill on Aug 1, 1863 for 6 months. (H.C. as he wrote his name in later years) joined the 17th SCV on May 3, 1864 in Columbia, SC. He is found again, December 8, 1864- Dec 14, 1864 at Jackson hospital in Richmond, VA. He was captured at Point Lookout. Paroled. Died July 16, 1895 in Charlotte, NC. Hiram is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC aged 68 years old.

Actual text: Died, in Bamberg, Barnwell County, S.C., May 20th 1885, Capt. Hugh M.(Medicus) Ray (1830-1885), in the 55th year of his age. Twelve days after the death of his wife (Narcissa Josephine Bowers, 1834-1885). Bro. Ray died of the same disease...both are sleeping in the Springtown (Bamberg County, South Carolina) cemetery. At the organization of Capt. T.W. Sanders' company, he was elected a lieutenant, and when the war ended he was captain of the same company, Co. H. 17th Regiment...JGW

David enlisted 25 March 1862 at Charleston. In 1862 He is wounded in the fighting at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg . On 31 Oct. 1863 he is sent on furlough for 15 days. He is wounded again at Petersburg at the Battle of the Crater and admitted to the CSA Hospital on 31 August 1864. On 16 Sept 1864 He is sent home to recover from serious wounds to his foot and thigh.

John was 20 years old from York Co SC. He enlisted with his older brother William Franklin on 9 Dec. 1861 at Camp Hampton. He is wounded in battle twice. Once at Boonesboro and again at Sharpsburg. He is in the hospital in August of 1864 for illness, he is in Wallace's Brigade at this time. He is taken POW at Five Forks and sent to City Point Va. He is released 20 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog.

|
William enlisted 9 Dec. 1861 at Camp Hampton. He was 32 years old. His younger 20 year old brother John A. enlisted with him in Capt. L.P. Sadler's Co. 17th SC Vol's. This became Co K. He served through out the war and was taken POW near Petersburg on 25 March 1865. Released on 20 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. He is from the York District of SC and described as 5 ft. 11 inches tall with grayish hair, Blue eyes and dark complexion.
