Charles was about 29 years old when he enlisted Jan 1861 in Co B 25th SC Infantry [Eutaw Regiment] He either reenlisted of was mustered in on James Island, Charleston, SC. He is transferred to Co F 2nd Engineers working on roads and bridges. He is listed as a Copper Smith. His first fight was on Jones Island 31 May 1863 and his last was Bentonville, NC 19-21 March 1865. He survived the invasion an died 10 Aug 1902 in Florence, SC We are related by a distant marriage.

SC He enlisted in Captain Thomas J China's Co. on 12 April 1862 at Battery Island, Charleston SC. aka [ Wee Nee Vol's] In Sept 1863 they are assigned to General Hagood's Brigade. as Pee Dee Legion. Battles: Charleston Harbour, Port Walthall Junction, Swift Creek, Drury's Bluff, Petersburg Siege, Fort Hamilton and Fort Fisher. He was captured near Fort Darling Virginia sent to Fort Monroe then to Point Lookout and on to Elmira in NY. He was released 19 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog. He died 10 Nov 1922 and is buried at Cedar Swamp Methodist Church in Kingstree, Williamsburg Co. SC. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed Martha Wilhemina Flagler.

Thomas E. Gamble enlisted May 16, 1862. He served with Company I, 25th SC Infantry until he was captured at the fall of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. Gamble was among the prisoners received at Elmira, NY on January 30. He died in the Elmira Prison Camp on April 7, 1865 and is buried there. Grave marker is # 2645.

Charles Henry Simonton - Colonel
|
Simonton began as Captain of the Washington Light Infantry in 1860. Simonton was promoted to Colonel after the 25th Infantry Regiment [also called Eutaw Regiment] was organized and mustered into Confederate service in July, 1862. It was formed with men of the 11th Battalion who were from Charleston and the middle region of the state. It served in the Charleston area assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and in September, 1863, it was placed in General Hagood's Brigade. During the spring of 1864 the unit moved to Virginia and fought at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. Later it was involved in the Petersburg siege south and north of the James River and the North Carolina Campaign.
Simonton and the remainder of the 25th SCV Regiment were captured near Wilmington NC at the Battle of Town Creek (also known as Battle of Forks Road) on February 20, 1865. After being sent to Point Lookout for one day and Capitol Prison in Washington DC, he arrived at Fort Delaware on March 25, 1865 where he remained until his release on July 24, 1865.
After the war he returned to his home town of Charleston SC where he resumed the practice of law. In September 1886 he was appointed by President Grover Cleveland as the U.S. District Judge for South Carolina. On December 11, 1893, President Cleveland nominated Simonton to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He remained with this court until his death on April 25, 1904.
He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston SC.
