Company Unknown
George Washington HerrellRank Unknown
George Washington Herrell was born 24 July 1933 in Wythe County, Virginia, the son of William Harrell and Elizabeth Hurst. The family moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee about 1835, then to Dallas County, Missouri in the late 1850s. When the Civil War erupted, George Herrell returned to Tennessee and enlisted as a private on 21 May 1862 at Lyons Store in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was later promoted to sergeant in Company A of the 12th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. On 20 December 1862 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. He was discharged as a private, by January 1865, but the reason for his reduction in rank is unknown. He enlisted under the name of George W. Harrell, but changed his name to Herrell following the war. One of George’s brothers, John James Harrell also served in Company A of the 12th Tennessee. There were a total of 13 Harrells who served in the 12th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and most were likely related. I believe that the J. J. Harrell who commanded Company G. was Jackson Jarvis Harrell that lived in Grainger County Tennessee. Jarvis also had two brothers in the battalion, William Nelson Harrell and James Roadman Harrell. These were all sons of William Nelson Harrell Sr. of Grainger County, of the North Carolina Harrells. James Roadman Harrell was a Lieutenant in Company G. Drury Peter Harrell was initially a private in Company H. of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, but later became the last commander of Company A. of the 12th Tennessee. Drury Peter Harrell was the son of Drury Peter Harrell Sr., a brother of William Nelson Harrell. George Washington Herrell, John James Harrell, and Robert Harrell were all sons of William Harrell of Wythe County Virginia and not related to the other Harrells who are descendants of a Jacob Harrell of North Carolina. All of the Harrells were from Companies A and C from Hawkins County, and Company G from Grainger County.

Company C
William Robert Wells - Private
William Robert Wells was the son of William S. and Susan A. (Reinhardt) Wells of Memphis, TN. He also had four brothers who fought for the Confederacy: Charles H. Wells (29th Tennessee Infantry), James M. Wells (13th Tennessee Cavalry), Julius T. Wells (4th Tennessee Infantry) and Francis M. Wells (28th Battalion Georgia Siege Artillery). There is little known about William R. Wells except his death date of 1861. William S. Wells was shot in his bed in June of 1865 by Union soldiers who were celebrating the recent victory. They fired into his home and did not know he was sick in bed at the time and he died of his wound.

Company I
Edward Claiborne Sturdivant - Sergeant
I am pretty sure that Ed.C Sturdivant of record is my great great grandfather Edward Claiborne S. He was from Brownsville, Tn in Haywood County (the county from which Co. I drew) and was born in 1823. His wife was Mary White, born 1832. Please contact me if you have any information. I am also trying to determine if James Sturdivant might have served, possibly as a drumer boy, he would have been ~10 years old.
