John enlisted in Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on December 12, 1863, and was active with his unit, 14th Virginia Cavalry, Co. C, during 1864 and 1865. He was at the surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, and was paroled in Staunton,Virginia on May 1, 1865. He was described on his parole as being 20 years of age, 5'7', fair complexion, light hair, with hazel eyes. At the time of Appomattox he was part of Beale's Calvary Brigade commanded by Capt. S. H. Burt, they were part of Major General William Henry Fitzhugh Lee's Division. He is buried in the Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Parnassas, Virginia.

ISENHART, Samuel T., 2nd Lieutenant, Co. E, 14th Virginia Cavalry.
Born in Alleghany Co., Md. 20 Oct. 1822. Farmer, age 32, Calhoun Co. 1860 Census.
Enlisted in Calhoun Co. 26 Sep. 1862. Commanding company January to October 1863. Present 30 Nov 1863. Commanding company 30 Dec. 1863. Resigned 15 Mar. 1864 because there were only 9 men present in the company and only 19 on the rolls, 3 on detached service and the rest prisoners of war.
Colonel Cochran endorsed his resignation "..this man is exceedingly objectionable & ineffective as an officer." Deserted to the enemy at Charleston 2 Dec. 1864.
Age 27, 5' 5", gray hair, brown eyes, dark complexion. Took oath and released. Farmer, age 42, Calhoun Co. 1870 Census. Died 15 July 1906.
Samuel was my 3x Grand Father on my mothers side of the family
