Shadrick Stewart of Ashe County, North Carolina served as private in Company C, 21st Virginia Cavalry (Peter's Rgt.). He and others were captured by Gen. Averal at Moorfield, Virginia on August 7, 1864. He was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio and died there on September 23, 1864. He was only 18 years old.

Enlisted June 1st, 186? (they did not fill in the actual year)at Sand Lick. He was enlisted by Captain Counts (probably a relative as there are Counts in his family tree) and he enlisted for a period of 3 years. It would also appear that he was AWOL on Aug 31, 1863. It appears it was for only the one day.

Calvin came over to the cavalry from the 36th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded at Blue Springs, Tennessee in Oct. 1863 but remained with the unit until it's surrender at Appomattox court house. He is my 5th Great Grandfather

Born in Lee Co. Enlisted in Lee Co 3/31/ 63 as Cpl in Co. K. Present 8/31/63. POW at Moorefield, W.Va 8/7/64 at age 19. Farmer, height 5'7', grey eyes, light hair. Held at Camp Chase from 8/12/64 until transferred to Pt. Lookout 3/18/65 for exchange. Resumed fighting and surrendered 5/1/65 in Taylorsville, Tn. Took oath 5/20/65 in Nashville. After war, spent 19 years on railroad construction work in W.Va, Ky, Tn, and Oh. Moved to Chattanooga to work for manufacturing co. U.S. Deputy Marshall for 6 years. Last living confederate veteran in Chattanooga at time of death.
