John Edward Jackson - Private
|
John Edward Jackson; my maternal Great-Great Grandfather, enlisted in C Co. 12th Va. Inf. Regt. at Petersburg, Va. on 6 Sept. 1861. He served during the entire war. He was captured at Burgess Mill;Dinwiddie County, Va.(near Petersburg)on 27 Oct. 1864. He was exchanged on 28 Mar. 1865.
Captured again before the retreat of the Army of Northern Virginia from Petersburg; at Bermuda Hundred, near Petersburg, on or about 1 Apr. 1865. He was then imprisoned at Hart's Island in New York, until released 21 June 1865.
John Edward Jackson died 28 July 1873 in Petersburg, Va. He is buried in Blandford Church Cemetery along with his brothers William Andrew Jackson; also of C Co. 12th VA. Inf. Regt., and also Cpl Ashton A. Jackson of C Co. 3rd VA. Inf. Regt., who was killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill 27 June 1862.
The Blandford Church Cemetery records which I have; list his death as Suicide by shooting. I wonder if this could have been due to what is now called P.T.S.D.(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)?

William Andrew Jackson - Private
|
William Andrew Jackson(b. 1834) enlisted in C Co. 12th Va. Inf. Regt. on 10 Aug. 1862 at Petersburg, Va. He was detailed as Sharpshooter. He served in this same unit with his brother; and my maternal Great Great Grandfather, John Edward Jackson.
He was captured at the Battle of Crampton's Gap near South Mountain, Md. on 14 Sept. 1862. This was a minor battle preceding the Battle of Sharpsburg(Antietam) Md. He was later exchanged at Aiken's Landing on 2 Oct. 1862. He was again captured on 5 Apr. 1865 at the Battle of High Bridge, Va. during the retreat of the Army of Northern Virginia.
He was imprisoned at Point Lookout,Md. and was released on 14 June 1865. He died of Cramp Colic? on 31 Jan. 1866. This is recorded in the Blandford Church Cemetery; Petersburg, VA. records. I have a book titled 'Civil War Soldiers of Brunswick County, Va.' in which his death date is mistakenly listed as 15 July 1868.
The reason for the mistake listed in the last paragraph; is that my G-G Grandfather had an infant son named for his brother William Andrew who died as an infant on 15 July 1868.
