62nd Georgia Cavalry

The 62nd Georgia Calvary became the 14 Va. Calvary. Asa was promoted to Full 4th Corporal estimated date: 15 Dec. 1862. He was killed at Cold Harbor, VA on 23 Jul 1864.

Enl. as Pvt. Co. G,7th Regt. GST on 11/28/1861. Enl. as Pvt in Co. B.62nd Regt. Ga. Inf. 8/1/1862. Xferred to Co. B, 8th Regt. Ga. Cav. 7/11/1864. Paroled Albany, GA 5/1865. Moved family to TX in 1871-73; settled in San Jacinto County. Served as County Commissioner. Died 1890.

Born on 16 Jan 1822 in Montgomery county, Georgia. Enlisted on Nov 1 1862. Promoted to full 3rd corporal about 15 AUG 1863. Promoted to full 4th corporal in 1863. Transfer to Company C, 8th Cavalry on 11 Jul 1864. Survived the war and died 28 Dec 1883 in Chattahoochee county, Georgia

Stephen Oscar Akins was my great great grandfather, from Cochrane County, Georgia. He lived until 1926. Died in Atlanta.

One of the six Self brothers to serve in the Confederate forces. Four other brothers served in the 6th Georgia Infantry, Company C. Three of the brothers were KIA - Jefferson, Marion, and Lott. Columbus was wounded in action and survived. David and his younger brother Spencer both served in the Ga. 62nd Calvary.
