In 'Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray, 1861-1865' by Mamie Yeary, copyright 1912: F. A. Scroggins, Grosvenor, Texas-Born in Russel County, Ala. Enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, at Columia, Ga., as private in Company A, Thirty-first Georgia Regiment. T. J. Phillips, first Colonel. From Savannah, Ga., we went to Virginia. Was captured and paroled at Shepherdstown. Was under Gen. Early in 1864. Was struck by four minie balls. Was in the charge on Appomattox Court House, in 1865. Was in the battles of Seven Days Around Richmond, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Cedar Creek, and Winchester. Was in many skirmishes and smaller battles. FA Scroggins did not mention that the 31st Georgia was in the Valley with Early, the assalt on Washington DC, at Fort Stedman, and the rear guard at Gettysburg. The archives in Washington DC has the Confederate service records, it lists FA Scroggins, born June 6, 1839, in Alabama; Enlisted October 5, 1861 as a private; Wounded in the thigh at Sharpsburg, MD on September 17, 1862; Captured and Paroled at Shepherdstown, MD; Appointed 4th Corporal January 6, 1863; 2nd Sergeant, May 3, 1863. Wounded at the Wilderness on May 6, 1864. Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 12, 1865. At the Surrender at Appomattox there were approximately 120 men present from the 31st Georgia Infantry of that number only 6 men were present in Company A. One Segeant, FA Scroggins, and five privates. After the war FA Scroggins returned to Alabama, was married, and the moved his family to Texas, they sailed from Mobile to Galveston, took the train to Waco then and Ox-Cart from Waco to Grosvenor, Texas. My Grandmother was his Grand-daughter. When I was about 12 years old, I asked my Grandmother, Nita Armstrong, if she knew her Grandfathers. She said, 'Absolutely'. Then I asked what they did. She told me that her Grandfather Scroggins was in the Army and told her stories of the war. She then told me, 'I cannot remember any of them. All I remember is that he said they marched around a lot.' It was not until I conducted an extensive research project on FA Scroggins and the 31st Georgia did I find out how much he did 'march around'.

Enlisted 09/62, captured at Spotsylvania Court House. Survived the war. Died Stewart Co. GA, 1873.

Wounded at 2nd Manassas, Va. August 28, 1862. Surrendered, Appomattox, VA. April 9, 1865. This was my grandmother's uncle. They were from Marion County but were part of the Muscogee Confederates.

Sick in Macon, Ga. Hospital November 5, 1864. No further details. This was my great-grandfather. He and his two brothers, Thomas & Elijah, were from Buena Vista, GA (Marion County) and joined the Muscogee Confederates, October 5, 1861.

Wounded through left thigh at New Market, Va. August 6, 1864. Sick in Lynchburg, Va. hospital Nov 5, 1864, Pension records show he was in Staunton, VA hospital close of war. He was my grandmother's uncle. I found his grave by accident and fortunately it had a Confederate headstone that was still legible.

1829-1867; school teacher at Liberty Hill, GA; son of Charles Heard Bostwick and Martha Butler of Spalding Co. GA. Wife was Elizabeth 'Bettie' Settle. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Va., April 9, 1865.

Henry is a GGGG Uncle.He enlisted in The Monroe Crowders in 1861.In March of 1862 he is listed on a regimental return for the 27 Reg't Georgia Infantry,Daily or Extra duty:Carpenter work on magazine.Dec 3 1863 Register of Wayside or General Hospital No.9 ,Richmond VA, has him moved to Camp Winder Hospital with Pneumonia.Jan 21 1864 Morning Report ,Jackson Hospital,Richmond,lists Disease Chro.Rheu.Company Muster Roll Co D 31 Reg't Ga Infantry,Remarks: Discharged April 26 1864.Henry was born about 1822 in Monroe County Ga.He was married to Eliza and had children (7). I have found no trace of his burial.

Thomas Howell Vaughn (1836-1889) was the son of John Vaughn and Priscilla Edwards of Monroe County, GA. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA, 5/12/1864. Released at Fort Delaware, DE, 6/16/1865. I am a descendant through his sister, Mary Jane Vaughn, who was married to Robert H. Ethridge, MD, of Monroe Co. GA.

Thomas R. White (1836-1891) was born in Monroe County, GA, the son of Edward White and Elvira Fambrough. He enlisted in Forsyth, May 8, 1862, and served until April 9, 1865 when he was included in the surrender at Appomattox Court House, VA. The life and military service of my great-great grandfather inspired me to research and write the regimental history: ''A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry'', published in 1997 by: Butternut And Blue 3411 Northwind Road Baltimore, MD 21234 410-256-9220 The 31st Georgia belonged to the Lawton-Gordon-Evans brigade, Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia - CSA.

1833-1912; son of Edward White and Elvira Fambrough, of High Falls, GA. Wife was Frances Hartsfield. Died in Worth Co. GA. Wounded at Monocacy, MD, July 9, 1864. Wounded and captured at Winchester, VA, Sept.19, 1864. Sent to Fort Delaware.

Transferred from Fort McHenry to Fort Delaware on 25 October 1864. Released on 17 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

Company F, 32nd Regiment Georgia Infantry Clay County,Georgia 'JEFF DAVIS GUARDS' 5th Sergeant Nathaniel Garlin Rice enlisted as a private in Company C, 5th Regiment Georgia State Troops on 16 Oct 1861, and mustered out in Apr 1862. He enlisted and was appointed 5th Sergeant of Company F, 32nd Regiment Georgia Infantry on 7 May 1862. Roll for 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him present.

Thomas J. Askew (1842-1911) was badly wounded in the right arm in the Battle of Gaines Mill in June 1862. He lived in Harris County, Georgia for 50 years without the use of his right arm. He was admitted to the Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta on April 1, 1910. He died December 11, 1911. He was interred in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.

John Y. Irvin served in the Lawton, Gordon, Evans Brigade 31st Reg. Co. H Harris County Mountain Tigers.

Enlisted as a Corporal on 13 November 1861. Killed on 27 June 1862 at Cold Harbor, VA.

Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. May 20, 1864. Died at Point Lookout, Md. June 24.1864.

From my own limited research,Shepherd enlisted in December of 61' but was to die only a few months later in the Spring of 62 before any of the major campaigns up in Virgina. If anyone has any more information please contact me. He should be added to the roster though, thanks.

Henry Jasper Yawn was my great grandfather and he was a Private in the GA 31st Regiment Company I out of Decatur County, GA. He joined May 1862 and was released on June 1865.

John Mathis Holland was my great grandfather. He enlisted Company K, Bartow Avengers, in Dawson, Terrell County, GA on May 12, 1862. He was listed as a prisoner of war, surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama May 4, 1865 & paroled at Meridian, Mississippi. May 16, 1865.

Residing in Terrell County, GA at time of enlistment. Enlisted on Nov 9, 1861 as Private. Enlisted in 7th Infantry State Troops (Georgia) on Nov 9, 1861. Mustered out from 7th Inf. State Troops (Georgia) on May 1, 1862. Enlisted into K company on May 15, 1862. Killed while serving on Sep 17, 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD.

Residing in Terrell County, GA at time of enlistment. Enlisted on Sep 5, 1861 as Private. Surrendered on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Wounded in 1863. Family always said his wounds never healed. Died in 1904.
