Enlisted in Schwartz's Battery in St. Louis, Missouri in 1861. Remained with them when they were assigned to the 2nd Illinois Light Artillery as Company E. He survived the Battle of Shiloh but died from typhoid while still in Union service at Carrollton, Orleans County, Louisiana.
