14th Illinois Infantry

Enlisted as a Private on 25 May 1861. Transferred into Company A, Veterans Battalion Regiment Illinois on 20 July 1864. Transferred back into Company A, 14th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 24 March 1865. Mustered out on 16 September 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Epp was at one time in Companies A, B, and E of the 14th Illinois and was in the combined 14th&15th in Company A. He enlisted in Company E, 14th Illinois on May 25, 1861, at age 17 as a drummer. He was captured at Acworth GA in October 1864 and sent to Andersonville prison where he stayed until April 15, 1865. He was on the Steamer Sultana when it blew up on April 27, 1865 and survived the explosion. He was buried in Leavenworth National Cemetary July 26, 1927. He was one tough customer.

William E. West served in the 14th along with his bother John Thomas West. His Other brothers Mathew A West served in the 129th and Oliver Jasper served in the 28th Illinois

Charles H. Barton was my great grandfather. He and his older brother, Isaac P. Barton, served together in Company D, 14th Illinois Infantry.

John Falter died in railroad accident on Oct 10, 1861, apparently just as Fremont's advance on Springfield, Mo., October 13-November 3, began.

Half brother of my 2nd great grandfather, John Jacob FATZER. J.S. was a private in Company D of this regiment before his promotion to Corporal and transfer to Company G. I have a letter on file J.S. wrote to John Jacob FATZER accounting for the movement of his (J.S.'s) unit near the end of the Civil War. J.S. was born in Switzerland in 1835 and died in Christian County, Illinois in 1920. He married Miss Margeretha M. MAISEL The couple had 7 children survive to adulthood.

Silas H. Polley enlisted on May 21, 1861. He re-enlisted in the 14th & 15th Veterans Brigade in 1864. At the beginning of April 1865, in Goldsboro, NC, he became a 2LT in the 135th USCT and was mustered out in Oct 1865 in Louisville, KY. He was my gggrandfather.
