Samuel Smith enlisted from Trenton, IL 11 Jun 1861 and served in the 22nd 3 years to 7 Jul 1864. Contracted typhoid and 'malarial fever' near Corinth. Recovered and was wounded at Stones River and on the first day of Chickamaga. Mustered out in Springfield, IL after the unit was pulled from the line in GA after the assault on Kennesaw. Returned to Springfield, IL, where he married, became a saloon keeper and was father of four girls.

Wounded at the battle of Stone's River on Sept. 19, 1863. Died at the Old Soldier's and Sailor's Home in Quincy, IL in 1898.

Served 1861-7/7/64. Jim Murray moved to Marion County after discharge. Lost an arm, not sure which engagement. Farmed west of Patoka, married Elizabeth Crowder and had three sons. I am a great-grand-daughter. He died in 1926 and is buried at Pratt Cemetery near his homestead (part of which is now Lake Carlisle)

Sent to hospital in Harrisburg Tenn July 1862. There until sent to Hospital Nashville Tenn Jan 1863. Then to Murfreesboro Tenn in May 1863. ''Discharge for disability by order Gen'l Rosecrans, Aug 29, 1863.'' ''Discharged Bridgeport Ala. Aug 29, 1863, by order Gen'l Rosecrans for disability final statements given.'' Muster-out Roll, Springfield Ill. July 7, 1864. Declaration for Invalid Pension, Ellis County Texas, 25 November 1896. ''That he is Totally unable to earn a support by reason of (chronic diarrhoea(sic), piles disease, abdominal viscera inguinal hernia of right side incurred in the service and line of duty on the march from Tapula (Tupelo) to Corinth Miss. on June 11, 1862 by carrying cartridges without shoulder straps, and general disability.''
