27th Illinois Infantry

Henry Cranford served in the 27th Illinois Infantry from Aug 12, 1861 to Dec 3, 1862. He was wounded at Corinth, MISS. and discharged in St. Louis, MO.

Thomas was my great, great grandfather. He ran away from home in Philadelphia, Pa. He was 15 years old. He enlisted in August of 1861. He was living in Macomb Illinois at the time. He was in the 27th Illinois until August of 1864 and he was transfered to company G 9th Illinois. He finished out the war and returned to Macomb and married Rachael Ryan. They returned to Philadelphia.

Ner (short for Abner) was the brother of my great-grandfather Ruthven Paul Hartley.

My great-grandfather Ruthven Paul Hartley enlisted at Elsah, Jersey Co., Il on August 19, 1862. He fought at Stones River, Chickamauga and Chattanooga, and was wounded during the advance on Dallas, GA on May 24, 1864. He recoverd in the Cumberland USA General Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee-June 4, 1864 Joe Holt USA General Hospital, Jeffersonville, Indiana- August 10, 1864 USA General Hospital Steamer 'D.A. January'- January 25, 1865 He lived out his life in Elsah, IL where he died on 23 September, 1916. He is buried in the Elsah Cemetery.

Enlisted (3-year term) on 20 Aug 1861, Camp Butler, IL, at the age of 23. Wounded at Chickamauga. Taken prisoner. Paroled. Mustered out 20 Sep 1864, Springfield, IL.

Amos Prouty served in the 27th Illinois, he was in the battles of Belmont, Corinth, Iuka, Island No. 10 and Columbus Ky. His son John Murray also served in the same company 'I' with his father. They were both from New Boston, Illinois. Mercer County. Amos and his two sons joined company G, 27th Illinois. Amos Prouty was disabled and discharged on Sep 25, 1862.

John Murray Prouty the son of Amos Prouty. John Murray Prouty was wounded at the battle of Resaca, Ga receiving a bullet in his lung, which he carried all his life. He enlisted on Jan 5th, 1864. He was trasferred to comapany E, 9th Illinois (consolidated)

William Prouty another son of Amos Prouty joined company G, 27th Illinois. He joined on August 13, 1862 mustered out June 17th, 1865.

My mother's paternal grandfather. Held as prisoner at Libby's Prison, Richmond, Virginia before being released during a prisoner exchange. See notes re his brother, Theodore. Charles, Theodore and Frederick are all German immigrants. Charles and Theodore survived the war, both moving on to Labette County, Kansas.

Frederick is another brother of my great grandfather, Charles. All three brothers were German immigrants. Frederick signed on to this regiment at the beginning of the Civil War and stayed with it to the end, in spite of one brother being murdered by at Libby's prison and another backing out after a year of service. Frederick passed on his farm in Labette County, Kansas in 1885.

Theodore was killed by his Confederate caretakers at Libby's Prison, Richmond, Virginia on Dec 26 1863 prior to a prisoner exchange. He is my great grandfather's brother (Charles Wadsack). The Rebs demanded that the prisoners involved in the exchange carry a boulder from one end of the prison yard to another. Theodore did not make it and was slaughtered by rebel swords. My great grandfather, who was weaker than Theodore at this point, and having seen his brother murdered, found the energy to carry the boulder and, as a positive consequence, was involved in the prisoner exchange.

Lasley Barton was wounded at Belmont MO and carried a bullet in his leg for the rest of his life. The regiment was relieved after Peach Tree Creek on Sherman's March to the Sea and returned to Camp Butler IL for discharge. He homesteaded in Humboldt County IA and is buried in Lu Verne Cemetery. He was a member of the Alfred Rowley Post of the GAR at Renwick IA.

Leander Barton fought his first battle under Gen. Grant at Belmont MO and his last under Gen. Sherman on the March to the Sea before returning to Illinois for discharge. After a dozen battles in over three years, his only wound was a bullet graze across the fingers of one hand at Kennesaw Mountain. He homesteaded in Humboldt County IA and is buried in Lu Verne Cemetery.

Lewis is my great grandfather

Wm. C. Post: b. 3/14/1842, Baltimore MD, son of John W. and Hulda Post; Wm had a twin sister, Martha Ann Post Randall, buried at Talulla, Ill. from which his birth date is established. Enrolled as Pvt on 8/20/1861 at Concord, ILl, and enlisted on 8/24/1861 to Co. K, 27th Ill. Inf. Was disabled, and released from hospital at Ft Dennison Ohio on 9/25/1862, and received final discharge for disability on 10/22/1862. William C. Post died on 4/10/1913 at the NHDVS-Roseburg Oregon. He is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles CA
