28th Illinois Infantry

I have quite a bit of information. Still looking for more, especially information before 1860.

David Troutner was my Great Great Uncle. David Troutner died at the Battle of Shilo in TN.

Joseph J. Troutner, was my Great Grandfather.

Oliver had three brothers serving Illinois units as follows Mathew Aaron West Company H 129th, John Thomas West Company K 14th, William E. West Company C 14th. Oliver, John and William fought at Fort Donaldson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and Jackson and all survived. Oliver was the only one who rejoined after his three year enlistment expired. He mustered out at Brownsville Texas.

Enlisted Aug 10, 1861; discharged Aug 26, 1864 [term expired], wounded.

Enlisted Aug 10, 1861; re-enlisted as veteran, transferred to Co. E; mustered out Mar 15, 1865.

Jacob Homer was born in PA and lived in Petersburg, Illinois. He died in Paducah, KY from wounds. If you have anymore information or questions, please send me an email with Jacob Homer as the title.

Died of Disease, Fort Holt Kentucky 1861

Joined 10/05/1861 Discharged 08/16/1862 for disability (Memphis, Tenn).

Enlisted as a Private in Co K 140th Illinois Infantry May 4, 1864. Mustered out Oct 29, 1864. Enlisted as a Private in Co I 28th Illinois Infantry Feb 25, 1865. Mustered out Feb 25, 1866.

On May 2 1881, Sarah E. Wines Dutton Dousey, his widow, filed for Invalid and Minor Civil War Pension for their daughter, Emma, in Michigan; then, on March 17, 1891, she filed for minor benefits for her in Wisconsin. They lived on the border of Menominee, Michigan and Marinette, Wisconsin, so this probably is why this happened. Thomas served with the 28th Illinois Infantry, Company K as a private, on the Union side. In Thomas's Civil War Record, it states his age as 42 when in reality, he would have been 62, so he must have been in good physical shape, to have lied about his age by 20 years. His description is recorded at 5'9', black hair and dark eyes. It also shows his birthplace as New Castle, England.
