Born in Bavaria, Germany. He and his wife Catherine Schildknecht Herbst and children came to the US in 1853 on the Ship Clinton arriving in New Orleans, LA. The settled, in Madison County, Illinois. On September 27, 1861, he enlisted in the 43rd Illinois Infantry, Company B. He mustered out in September 26, 1864. He was a Blacksmith by trade.

Georg served in the 43rd until the Battle of Shiloh. There he was wounded in both legs. The bullet shattering the bone in one leg and then passing through the tissue of the other leg. His brother Heinrich was a musician and I assume he assisted George to safety. Heinrich was again disabled for whatever reason at Shiloh from a gunshot wound at Wilson''s Creek in Missouri August 10th, 1861. Both brothers survived the war. Georg was the worst casualty as per his pension files he lived in boarding houses and may have been addicted to the pain medicines of the day. All information obtained from the National Archives pension files of both soldiers.

Heinrich served as a drummer for the 43rd Illinois until the battle of Shiloh. There he reinjured a gunshot wound from the battle of Wilson''s Creek August 10th, 1861. He also had at least one brother whom served in the 43rd. See Georg Mueller. This information is from the files obtained from the National Archives in Washington
