Joined regt.in 1862 at Peoria Il. at age 18.He was admitted inspite of his being short of the 5'3' minimum height.After the service he became a newspaper editor.He was a well known humorist and writer of his time.He wrote a memoir of the war from a privates view point:'The Drums of The 47th',which is still in print.

August Schmitz was born in Burscheid, Prussian Rheinland and immigrated to Brooklyn, NY. August, his wife and his young daughter moved to Peoria by 1860. He enlisted for a bounty in March of 1865, joined the 47th IL at Demopolis, AL, and wound up as a drummer in the Post Band in Selma, AL, during the beginning of Reconstruction. He was mustered out with the rest of his unit in Jan. 1866. After the war he joined the Light Guard Band in Peoria. He died in 1870, and his widow moved the family back to Brooklyn.

I am the proud caretaker of my relatives first letter to his wife after arriving at Camp Butler in Springfield ILL. He told her about being sent to Cairo in the 47th regiment company F under the direction of a Captain Likes. He mentions several other people in the letter, but they seem to be civilians as I cannot locate them so far. In any case, it makes me proud to be related to such a fine soldier as he seems to be, as well as the gracious gentleman, loving husband, and proud father he seems to be. Curiously, the paper is embossed with a birds head on the corner that actually shows in varying levels of definition through the folded letter. I have it covered with a plastic sleeve to prevent any more fingerprints and I keep it safe from light. But it is a testament to the legacy of family and freedom!

Enlisted as a Private on 5 December 1863 in Steuben, Illinois in Company G, 47th Infantry Regiment Illinois Intra-company transfer from G Company to B Company on Nov 28 1864. Mustered Out Company G, 47th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 21 Jan 1866 at Selma, AL. Buried in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.

Due to poor transcription and record muddling, Jehu G. Long's service record has in some places, been incorrectly merged with a John Long of no relation. Jehu's company 'H' was reorganized into company 'D' which may have been the source of confusion when examining pension records. Jehu G. Long, my great-great-great uncle is buried in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Nebraska, alongside his wife and some of their children.

James Askey, Private, Company I, 47th Regiment, Illinois Infantry was born in England and came to America in 1857 with his Mother, three brothers and two sisters. James, age 20, and his brother, William enlisted in the Union Army at Peoria, Illinois on September 4, 1861. James died in prison. His remains interred at Alexandria National Cemetery, Pineville, Louisiana.

William Askey, Private, Company I, 47th Regiment, Illinois Infantry was born in England and came to America in 1857 with his Mother, three brothers and two sisters. William, at the age of 22 years and his brother, James enlisted in the Union Army in Peoria, Illinois, September 4, 1861. William served three years in the Union Army. He was discharged October 11, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois. William Askey is my grandfather. After the Civil War he took up homestead in Oxford, Furnas County, Nebraska. He married Lydia Lowry Phillips in 1871. Six children were born to this union. William Askey died October 29, 1918. Buried at Edison Cemetery, Edison, NE.

Peleg Nelson Carson was my great-great grandfather. He died at the Idaho Soldiers Home in Boise, Idaho Dec. 3, 1922.

Thomas Askey, Private, Company K, 47th Regiment, Illinois Infantry was born in England and came to America in 1857 with his Mother, three brothers and two sisters. Thomas enlisted in the Union Army at age 17 in Peoria, Illinois on January 26, 1864. Thomas was killed in action. Burial unknown.
