53rd Illinois Infantry

Father and son enlisted with the 53d in Ottawa, Illinois on December 1, 1861 and saw service with the regiment almost to the very end. John (1st) was discharged Nov 10, 1864 and John (2nd) was discharged March 26, 1865.

Enlisted with his father William in 1862. William got sick and was discharged in Sept. Alem fought in Georgia and was part of Sherman's March to the sea. After the war he became a Methodist minister.

Born 1840 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Married Mary Ann Crowder in 1860. Enlisted in Co. G in 1862; reenlisted in Co. B in February of 1864. Wounded in the chest by a musket ball in the Battle of Atlanta. Discharged July 1865. Raised four children, and died in 1918. Older brother John served in the 135th OVI.

Enlisted at age 14 along with his older brothers James and John and father Patrick. Captured after Shiloh and briefly held at Beauregard's headquarters in Corinth, before escaping.

Enlisted as private. Promoted to first corporal in 1864 and sergeant later. Wounded and captured during Sherman's march to the sea, he was sent to Andersonville prison and was in hospital at Benton Barracks in St. Louis when the regiment mustered out and is listed as missing in action on the final muster role.

Was missing in action at Jackson, MS July 12, 1863. Was found by his father, Patrick Ryan and returned to duty about July 21. Listed as killed in action at Jackson on final muster role, he returned safely from the war.

Mustered in as First Sergeant. Promoted 1st Lt Dec 1863 and Captain Feb 1864. His three sons: James, John and Daniel also served in Company K and all returned from the war although on the final muster roles James is listed as missing in action and John is listed as killed in action.
