Captured at Battle of Brice's Crossroads (Guntown), MS on June 10, 1864. Imprisoned at Andersonville Prison until paroled in April 1865. Died in 1915 in Perry County. My GG Grandfather.

My 2nd Great Grandfather, Isaac Alexander Winchester (1837-1921), was a private in the 81st Illinois Infantry, Co. B, as indicated by his obituary; by the Roll of Honor of the Salina Daily, May 30, 1922; by the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database; and, more importantly, by the Illinois Adjutant General's Report on the 81st Illinois Infantry, page 77. He was mustered in August 26, 1862, in Camp Anna, IL, by Captain Hightower, and out August 5, 1865, in Vicksburg, MS, by Captain Lander. He went on to survive three wives. His photographs as a veteran and member of the GAR can be found on Find A Grave (Memorial #19259507) and Family Search (ID #9XB1-3NG).

Born on March 10, 1844 and died on February 12, 1863 in Mississippi. He was the son of John and Eliza Brown.

Sergeant Kimzey was born on February 15, 1833 in Perry County, Illinois. He married Mary Jane Steele on January 6, 1854. He had four children. He died on June 13, 1864 at Vicksburg. Other than his wife and children, he was survived by his mother and six siblings, two of whom served in the war.

john died shortly after the war. his widow married a man named mccoy who had served in the 14th illinois infantry. he is buried in a little country cemetery near ava, ill.

Ervin was captured June 10, 1864 at Guntown MS where the regiment was in action. He was confined at Andersonville and was exchanged September 17, 1864. He and Newton Harvey Anderson were brothers and James Miller married their sister. All three men served in Company E when the regiment was formed at Anna Illinois.

My great great uncle. He was from Anna area in Southern Illinois. I have typewritten copies of a couple of years from his diary and near the end of it he talks a little of a 'sharp battle with the rebels' and mentions battle at Raymond MS. In the diary he lists the complete roster of Company E, 81st Illinois Infantry. His brother Ervin was also in Co. E and survived Andersonville. My great grandfather, James Miller who was their brother-in-law was also a private in Company E.

My great grandfather. He was from Cobden-Anna area of Southern Illinois. His wound developed into cancer after the war and he died about 16 years or so after end of Civil War. I have a faint copy of a soldiers pension his family received after his death. $16.00 a month.

James Dudley Beasley was my great great grandfather.Was captured and was a prisoner in Andersonville prison.He survived and died Oct 31 1920.

Edwin was a veteran of the Mexican War and with his younger brother James being the company commander you can just imagine these two butting heads regularly...

Captain Bartleson was also captured at Brice's Crossroads, Miss June 10, 1864 and sent to Florence, SC.

The original post was a bit incorrect... John was one of four brothers who served in Company I of the 81st Illinois. Like many others in the regiment, young John was captured at Brice's Crossroads June 10, 1864 and sent to Andersonville Prison. He was then sent to Camp Lawton in Millen, Georgia and before 1865 he was paroled. It's believed that John Bartleson was the last living survivor of Andersonville. He died in April of 1944.

Because of sites like yours I was able to get a physical description of my great grandfather. Thanks.

By blood I'm related to many in Company I, 81st Illinois infantry regiment and by marriage even quite a few more...from enlistment through their campaigns, trials and tribulations, including capture and imprisonment... I especially like to research their time spent after the Civil War.
