83rd Illinois Infantry

Wondering if anyone has additional info about this unit from handed down stories, etc.

This is one of my maternal gr gr grandfathers, and I have been researching for several years. Any information I can obtain would be greatly appreciated.

Enlisted as a Private on 14 March 1865. Transferred into Company E, 61st Infantry Regiment Illinois on 26 June 1865.

Enlisted as a Private on 6 August 1862. Enlisted in Company B, 83rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 21 Aug 1862. Transferred out of Company B, 83rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 30 Sep 1864. Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 30 Sep 1864.

Capt John McClanahan took a keen interest in raising troops and although in his 68th year, he was by acclamation elected Captain of Company B, 83rd Illinois Infantry. His company awarded him a sash and sword in St. Louis, Missouri on August 28th, 1862. He died at Fort Donelson on February 23, 1863 from the effects of the wound he received in defense of that Post on February 3rd in his 69th year of life.

Enlisted as a Private on 26 July 1862. Enlisted in Company C, 83rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 21 Aug 1862. Mustered Out Company C, 83rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 26 Jun 1865 at Nashville, TN.

Great grandfather was from NY. He died in 1915 in Pasadena, California. Enlisted in Berwick Co., Ill Aug 21, 1862 and discharged May 7, 1865 as a private. Later applied for disability.

Alex was my great-great-grandfather. He enlisted August 8, 1862 and was mustered out on May 20, 1865. There were two newspapers in Monmouth, Illinois who published letters from the 83rd which I've gathered into two documents. One of them was letters written by the chaplain. If anyone is interested, please email me and I'll send them to you.

Williams Seamans enlisted in the 83rd Illinois Infantry, Company D on August 21, 1862. He was mustered out on June 26, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. William was married at the time of enlistment and had five children and his occupation was a farmer. William died February 26, 1900 and is buried in Wallace Cemetery in Jewel, Kansas.

Mustered in on August 21, 1862 from Knox Co., IL. Died of pneumonia on April 29, 1864 at the Union Army Hospital, Fort Donelson, TN

Leslie S. Lopeman was in the Civil War. According to his record, he enlisted on 31 July 1862 and was mustered into Co. E, 83rd Ill. Inf. on 21 Aug 1862 as a Pvt. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tenn. on 26 June 1865.

McGrath D. Lopeman was in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Pvt. on 31 July 1862 and was mustered into Co. E, 83rd. Ill. Inf. on 21 Aug 1862. He was mustered out on 26 June 1865 at Nashville, Tenn. -- He was a member of GAR Post #486 at Saunemin, Ilinois. He died 17 Dec 1908.

born oldham county kentucky, moved to warren county illinois, married a mary ann kelly, died kansas Older brother to james booth abbott of the 102nd illinois who was also born in kentucky

Born in 1844 in Greene Co., Pennsylvania and died on September 23, 1862. He enlisted at the age of 18 on August 13, 1862. He was mustered into Company F of the 83rd Illinois Infantry on August 21, 1862 in Monmouth, Illinois.

Buried at Newton, Harvey county, Kansas.

Later transferred to the 61st Regiment, company G

I have a picture of both Cyrus and Ira Butler when they joined the 83rd Ill, Co G, in July 1861. Ira was killed in Tennessee, near Ft. Donelson.

This was my Gr. Gr. grandfathers older brother.

Served with his younger brother Eseck in the same Company. Was discharged in 1863 promoted to Lt. and transfered to the 16th U.S.C.I. Had another brother, Daniel H. Jones, in the 83rd Pa. Vol. and yet another in the 10th Pa. Vol., Thomas W. Jones who was held as a POW in both Anderson and Libby prison.

Born in 1845. It is unclear when he died, but he is buried at Maquon Cemetery in Maquon, Illinois.

Also served in 61st Illinois, Company I. Lived in Warren and McDonough counties.

Served as Private in Captain Joseph B. Donley's Company - Company I, 83rd Regiment of Illinois Infantry. Enrolled 08 Aug 1862 and discharged 26 Jun 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Died 08 Sep 1909 in Knox County, Illinois. Alpheus was a son of Ozias P. Barton and Rachel Massie (Massey) Barton.

M F Gray born July 25, 1842 in New Jersey where he lived until 1850 when he accompaning his parents to Knox County,Il. After finishing his education ,he engaged in farming until 1862 at which time he enlisted in Company K 83rd Illinois Infantry, in which he served 3 years moved to Poweshiek County Iowa after the war were he raised his family and died of Stomach cancer in 1895. He is buried at Kent Church just North of Brooklyn, Ia

My great great great Uncle , died of Diease at Mound City Illinois . Buried in National Cematery there , also has headstone in Victoria Illinois cem.
