89th Illinois Infantry

Samuel Hebb was a prisoner of war at Andersonville and survived. As a P.O.W., the state of Illinois issued him 100 acres of land to clear and farm within 10 years, which he was successful. The farm which he started still remains in our family today. Prettyman was the son of William Montgomery and Olivia Davis of Posey County, Indiana. When his parents moved to IL they left Prettyman, in Indiana, at the home of his uncle, Robert Montgomery. It was during this time that Prettyman enlisted in the service. When his father returned for his son and some crops, he learned of his enlistment. Due to his young age William removed Prettyman from the service and took him to Illinois. A short time later Prettyman again enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted from Franklin Co., Illinois into Company B, 89th Infantry on August 13, 1862 and was mustered in on August 25, 1862. The Regiment was assigned to McCooks Corps and took an active part in the Battle of Stones River. Prettyman was wounded and died in Nashville, Tennessee on December 29, 1862. The 'Rail Road Regiment' was organized by the Railroad Companies of Illinois at Chicago, in August, 1862.

Thomas Moroney was wounded in action at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and would later succumb to his wounds.
