Wm. Wirt Calkins was a first Lt. Co. E 104th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Aide decamp, staff of General John Beatty. It is mentioned in our family history book.

Detailed as regimental butcher. We have a number of letters, from National Archives and family collection. He was killed in action at Missionary Ridge, November 1863, moments after 'silencing' a sniper who had held up his squad in the 2nd line of rifle pits. William shot left handed and was the only one who could hit the sharpshooter. His descendants have items sent home from his haversack - pocket testament, postal currency, stencil, pocket watch, cap pouch.

Enlisted as a Private on 14 August 1862. Mustered in Company E, 104th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 27 August 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant Major. Mustered out on 6 June 1865 at Washington, DC.

Mustered August 27, 1862. Honorably Discharged June 6, 1865. Residence Bruce, La Salle Co., Illinois. Born May 4, 1834 in Tunkhannock twp. Wyoming Co., Pennsylvania. Died August 19, 1926 in Neosho Co., Kansas. Buried in East Hill Cemetery. He beloned to the Presbyterian Church, Grand Army of the Republic, Masonic Fraternity and the Republican Party. His basic history is in '' The History of Neosho and Wilson Counties''.

Born 2 Mar 1842 in Emmelweiler, Wuerttemburg. Immigrated to America with family November 1848. Enlisted Groveland August 1862. Wounded in thigh at Hartsville, Tennessee 7 Dec 1862. Participated with regiment in campaigns through remainder of war. Married Helen Scherer following war. Lived in Illinois, later Wisconsin until 1880. Moved to Decatur County, Kansas. Died October 1897.

CALLAGHAN, Anthony Private Groveland Aug 27, 1862

Michael enlisted under the surname Tobacco because that was what his family (the Tabakas) was using at that time. He later desrted from this unit while it was waiting to be formally exchanged (after capture). After deserting this unit he re-enlisted in the 7th Indopependent Battery of Wisconsin Light Artillery under the name Michael Tabaka. His pension records list the aliases Michael Tabaka and Michael Tabasinky

Charles Treut (Carl Ludwig Treut, also spelled Treudt) came to America from Nieder Florstadt, Germany, in 1846. He settled in St. Louis, and served under General Lyon in Missouri, summer of 1861. Moved to Hennepin, Illinois in September 1861. Enlisted in Company K, 104th Illinois, August 1862. I am Searching for descendants of 104th Illinois soldiers who have photos, relics, letters and diaries of their soldier ancestor. Willing to exchange information.
