123rd Illinois Infantry

William Babers sometimes spelled Baber enlisted on Aug 1, 1862 at Charleston, IL. for 3 years. He was 20 years old born in Warren Co., KY. His regiment became part of Gen. Wilder's famous 'Lightning Brigade' of mounted infantry, armed with Spencer repeating rifles. He received a gunshot wound at the Battle of Hoovers Gap, TN., and when he returned to duty he served the rest of the war as a strecherbearer and ambulance driver. He was discharged June 28, 1865 at Nashville, TN. He paid $10.00 to retain his Spencer Rifle. He returned to Coles Co., IL where he married Margaret Louthan and they moved to Neosho Co., KS. They returned to Coles Co., IL where he farmed in Ashmore Twp. and his wife died. He married Charity Thrasher and had two children and died there and is buried in Ashmore Cemetery.

Issac J. Pugh was my great-grandfather. He was wounded at the Battle of Perryville; captured near Liberty, Tenn. June 7, 1863; returned to his unit July 1864. After the war he was grain dealer in Toledo, Illinois; buried there upon death in 1924. As a young boy growing up in Chicago (1941-49) I would play with his Spencer rifle that my mother had been given. When we moved to Arizona she gave it to her brother. Oh, how I wish she had kept that rifle! A few years ago I visited the spot where he was wounded at Perryville and then Liberty, Tennessee where he was captured.

James T Smith enlisted in Mattoon Illinois in 1862, Mustered out in 1865

B. 1821 Died either from wounds or disease near Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, TN 22 Jun 1863. Is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in Murfreesboro, TN

Enlisted as a Private on 1 August 1862. Mustered in Company F, 123rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 6 September 1862. Mustered out on 28 June 1865.

Commissioned a 1st Lieutenant on 6 September 1862. Resigned on 4 March 1863.

He joined in Mattoon, Coles County, Illnois in 1862.

He joined in Mattoon, Coles County, Illnoisin 1862 he was mustered out in 1863. In 1867 his sister, Rachel, married a fellow member of his company, Samuel Fox. Rachel and Sam Fox were my great great grandparents.

My Gr-gr grandfather. Fought at the Battle of Perryville, KY and was wounded in his side by either a gunshot or shrapnel from an explosion. He later developed scurvy on the march. He never completely healed from the wound and scurvy. Became a brick mason after the war, and died destitute.

John Enos French signed up for a short tour with a lot of other folks from Hutton, including his father, Samuel S. French. When the company disbanded, he transferred to the 68th Illinois Infantry. John was absent from the unit for most of the musters. We haven't figured out why. Samuel French signed up for a short tour with a lot of other folks from Hutton, including his son, John Enos French. Both were blacksmiths, though John later became a preacher. Enlisted as a Corporal on 4 August 1862. Mustered in Company K, 123rd Infantry Regiment Illinois on 6 September 1862. Died on 5 April 1864.

2x Great Grandfather Was captured and spent 6 months in Andersonville.

Son of Fountain Land & Barbara Sands, William Land: Residence Ashmore IL; Enlisted on 8/4/1862 as a Private. On 9/6/1862 he mustered into 'K' Co. IL 123rd Infantry He was Mustered Out on 5/15/1865
