Born 12 april 1826 in Armstrong Co. Penn. Enlisted CSA 7 June 1861. Wounded in Winchester, VA june 1863. Served under Col Harry T Hayes. Captured at the Wilderness Battles (Spottsylvania), May 1864 sent to Ft. McHenry, MD. Present at the following Engagements: Bull Run July 18, 1861. Manassas July 27, 1861 Slabtown, May 7, 1862. Middletown, May 24, 1862 Winchester, May 25, 1862 .Cross Keys, June 8 1862 Port Republic, June 9, 1862. Cold Harbor, June 27, 1862 Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862. POW Antietam Sept. 1862. Exchanged at Aikens Landing VA Nov. 1862. Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862. Fredericksburg, May 4, 1862. Winchester, June 14 1863. Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. Gettysburg July 2, 1863. Balaam grew up in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. On September 29, 1861 he enlisted as a Corporal in the Civil War and served under Captain Street in the 17th Louisiana Infantry, Company D. On July 4, 1863 at the Battle of Vicksburg in Mississippi, Balaam was captured. He signed an oath never to take up arms against the United States and was paroled July 10th. Returning home to Jackson Parish he enlisted again as a Private. When the Civil War ended he was once again paroled on June 12, 1865 at Monroe, Louisiana. Hugh Shields' name appeared on a list of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia 'who have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., commanding said Army to Lieut. Genl. U.S. Grant, commanding Armies of the United States. Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. List dated April 10, 1865.' His wife's Confederate Widow's Pension Application listed that Hugh Shields received an honorable discharge and was surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. He was a cook and a teamster in the army. Many times he was either sick or wounded, but always he returned to his regiment. Apparently he had physical stamina, besides a great deal of tenacity and determination. He was not born in the United States but in Liverpool, England in 1836/1837 of Irish parentage. He came to the U.S. between 1857 and 1860 (probably with a younger brother named Owen) and was trained at Camp Moore in Tangipahoa, Louisiana before going to Virginia to fight. (A brick in his memory and honor has been laid at Camp Moore by our family). He married Christanna Flick in New Orleans in 1867. He worked as a foreman at the bakery of Margaret Haughery. He died on March 14, 1882 and is believed to have been buried in Lafayette Cemetery Number 2 in New Orleans, La.

Alexander McAuley was born June 25, 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He immigrated with parents to New Orleans. Alexander enlisted in Co.H, 7th Louisiana Infantry. He was wounded at Port Republic. Surgeons removed his foot with nothing but apple brandy to deaden the pain. He remained in Richmond and later married Eva Hewitt. Alexander died May 12, 1919 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.

Charles was discharged March 4, 1865. He was captured a number of times. I have his original parole papers.

Harry was the brother of Charles Swiler. Henry was killed in battle.
