19th Louisiana Infantry

Died in hospital at Oxford MS and is buried there

Joshua was born 3 Feb 1838 in Jackson Co. Ala. On the 1860 census he is 22 y/o living in Bellevue, Bossier Parish, La. He enlists 11 Dec 1861, the same day as his brother-in-law Calvin Holloway in Co A 19th La. Infantry. He has 28 cards in his archival file. on 31 June he is elected to 5th Sgt and then to 4th Sgt. 16 July 1863 he is appointed in the field to Jr. 2nd Lieut. He suffers a gunshot wound to his knee ib 20 Sept 1863 in action at Marietta Ga. He is sent home on wounded furlough which is extended by Dr. Philson due to complication. It appears he did not recover full use of his leg and I have not found any documentation to indicate he returned to his unit. He served with Gibson's Brigade, Clayton's Division, Lee's Corps Army of Tennessee. He died 16 Feb 1906 and is buried in the Eastview Memorial Park Cem. at Vernon, Wilbarger Co. Texas. We are related by marriage.

Calvin was born 8 July 1842 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. He enlisted on 11 Dec 1861at Camp Moore La. by Col. R. W. Turner. He has 19 cards in his archival file. Co A of the 19th La Infantry was known as the [Vance Guards] He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga on 20 Sept. 1863. He re-enlisted for the war at Marieta Ga on 20 Jan 1864. HIs regiment was consolidated late in the war and became known as the Pelican Regiment. I have found his records in both units. He fought in many battles including Siege of Jackson Miss, Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign, Mill Creek, New Hope, Ezra Church, Nashville, Franklin and Meridian Miss & Tupelo. He is my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. He died 11 Aug 1919 in Luella, Garyson Co. Texas. His wife filed for a CSA pension on 10 Nov 1927 which was granted.

Died 23 Sep 1863 from wounds at the Battle of Chickamauga

Jesse was born in Pone, Rusk County Texas near the Louisiana line. He is the youngest member to serve the Confederacy I have found in my over 40 years of researching the CSA national archives. He is listed on the 1860 census as 11 years old. He enlisted 11 Nov 1861 in Capt. Louden Butler's Co [ Robin's Gray's]. His family thinks he was about 13. This unit became Co B 19th Louisiana Infantry. He has 20 cards in his archival file. He was present at the battles of Shiloh, Farmington, Siege of Jackson, and was wounded in the left thigh at the battle of Chickamauga. He returned to his unit and fought thru the Atlanta Campaign. He is retired [per CMR remark] while at the hospital in La Grange Ga. when the wound to his thigh began to cause severe problems. I did not find any record of him in the consolidated Pelican Regiment. He married my cousin Nancy Eugenia Covington and died in Redlands, Bossier Parish, La and is buried alongside his wife in Salem Cem. at that location.

Hugh came to Bossier Parish from St. Clair Co., AL in 1859 before the war and joined Co. B when it was raised. (Interestingly, his father in Alabama joined the Union''s First Ala. Cav, USV.) Hugh was taken prisoner July 16th, 1863 at Brandon, MS, apparently while part of a detail assigned to burn the Pearl River railroad bridge to cover Gen. Johnston''s retreat from Jackson after the fall of Vicksburg. He was incarcerated at Camp Morton (Indianapolis, IN) and paroled March 25th, 1865. I still have his leave papers granting him 30 days leave as a paroled prisoner.

Enlisted 11 Dec. 1861 at Camp Moore, LA., born Kennebec Co. ME (Now Androscoggin Co.), age 52, hazel eyes, grey hair, fair complexion, occupation engineer and was 5’ 10” tall. Discharged 9 Nov. 1862 at Pollard, Alabama because of his age and his term had expired. This Regiment was organized at Camp Moore on November 19, 1861, with eight companies. On Dec 11, two more companies joined the regiment, giving it a total of 873 men. The regiment spent the winter in New Orleans. In February 1862, it went to Corinth, Mississippi. The men fought in the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, and lost about one-fifth of their total strength. During the engagement at Farmington, on May 9, the regiment remained in the trenches at Corinth to protects its brigade's camps and supplies. The regiment became part of the Mobile, Alabama garrison in July and spent most of its time in camp at Pollard, Alabama, east of the city. Where it remained until April 1863. Company D was called the "Claiborne Grays."

Mark was born 4 Oct 1844 in Chambers, Tuscaloosa Co. Ala. He was 18 years old when he enlisted 21 Dec 1861 at Camp Moore. He had moved to Ashley Co. Arkansas which borders Louisiana. He enlisted as Pvt in 3rd Co E. in Capt. H.H. Ham's Co. aka as [ Stars of Equality] He later reenlisted at Corinth until 11 Dec 1864. Promoted to 2nd Sgt in Sept 1863. IN March 1865 he is listed as unit Color Bearer. On 13 July 1863 he is slightly wounded in the foot in a skirmish in front of Jackson, Miss. and sent to the rear. He is on a roll of POW's which was surrendered at Citronella, Ala. It is noted that his home is in Ashley Co. Ark. He was married to my cousin Susan Lavenia Everett. He died 20 Sep 1904 in Warren, Bradley Co. Ark. He has 16 cards in his archival file.

would like to locate any information and photographs of the 19th Louisiana Infantry. Webb Kidd Jennings was my great grandfather and he was wounded at the battle of Spanish Fort where he lost an arm.

Pvt. Charles Smith from Clinton, E. Feliciana Co., LA., was discharged from his first enlistment on July 4, 1862 at Tupelo, MS. In December, 1862, he re-enlisted for 3 years or term of the war at Mansfield, LA. He was wounded on the first day of Battle of Chickamauga, 19 SEP 1863; died from his wounds on 26 SEP 1863. His final resting place is uncertain. I believe it is either in Troup Co., GA, or Spalding Co., GA.

James Monroe Sigler, my g-g-g-grandfater is buried in the historic Old Camp Ground Cemetary in Sugartown, LA. The Old Camp Ground Cemetery is located on Old Camp Ground Cemetery Road in Sugartown. Take Hwy 112 East from Sugartown to Thomas Smith Road. The Old Camp Ground Cemetery Road turns off Thomas Smith Road just behind the Sugartown Pentecostal Church. The original glass and metal marker is intact at his gravesite.
