My Grandpa - Fought in all the battles the 31st participated in. Captured and paroled at Vicksburg - exchanged and rejoined his command with duty along the Red River until surrender May65.

Enlisted 21 April 1862 at Delhi, Louisiana.

This is my grandmother's great-grandfather. His last name has been misspelled all over the place. The spelling my family landed on is McWhiney. Other spellings: Mewhiney, Mawhiney, Mowhiney, Mawhiny... He died near Vicksburg, MS on November 9, 1862. His son, Thomas Mewhiney/McWhiney, was 1 yr old.

I haven't confirmed, yet, that this is a relative. However, I have confirmed that he is buried at Soldier's Rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg. Died: 04/08/63.

Was a SGT in Co.A in the 31st LA Infantry when first joined. He was a 2nd LT. when the unit was imprisoned at Claiborne Co. MS after battle in Vicksburg, after oath to Union he was paroled. Returned to 31LA Infantry and fought until was disbanded at Mansfield LA in 1865. He died in 1879 in Wharton,TX. His name is listed on a CSA Monument At the Wharton County Court House. He enlisted in 1862 in East Carroll Parish LA31st

Petty was born 20 Aug 1832 in Greene Co. Alabama. He has 12 items in his archival file. He enlisted 1 May 1862 at Monroe, Louisiana for 3 years in Capt. Baucum's Co. Sworn in by S W Odell for 3 years. Taken as POW at Vicksburg and exchanged 29 Mar. 1864 at Shreveport. After Vicksburg the 31st became attached to General Allen Thomas's command [ which is my ancestor on my direct Thomas line] Supported the defense of forts Buelow and Randolph near Pineville. He died 3 April 1915 at Grand Cane, De Sota Parish La. He is my cousin on my Gandy line.

According to his widow's pension application(s), he was discharged from service on July 3, 1865 (June 26, 1865) in Alexandria, LA. He enlisted May 4, 1862 from Catahoula Parish.

Burrell was from Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. He was 25 when he enlisted in the newly formed Regiment at Jackson, in Capt S.F. Rouths Co. F 31st Infantry. Posted for duty around Vicksburg. Picket and patrol duty. Fought the invaders until they were driven into the siege trenches of Vicksburg. Surrendered and taken POW 4 July 1863. Exchanged 29 Mar 1864 at Vienna, Louisiana. Paroled at Alexander, La. 1 July 1865. Note to researchers, do not confuse this B.S. Pool with the CSA soldier B.S. Pool found in Co A 14th Regiment, La. Infantry Burrell died 30 Sep 1919 and is buried at Squires Cem. Summerville, LaSalle Parish, La.

William is my 2nd great grandfather. He was born in 1825 in Georgia and died 6 Nov 1902 in Junction City, Arkansas. He enlisted at Farmerville, LA, and was sworn in the C S Service on or about 6 May 1862 in Co H, Capt W W Farmer, Col C H Morrison, 31st LA Infantry and was in the great siege of Vicksburg (May 18 - July 4, 1863). He was captured at Vicksburg and later paroled. He was later reorganized at Alexandria, LA, and then discharged in Mansfield, LA, 15 May 1865. I have copies of affidavits signed by fellow members of his from that time. The documents were for his wife in 1914 when she applied for his pension. The signers were David Phelps of Farmersville, LA, James Harris and Ben Hux (not sure of this spelling) from Junction City (says either AR or LA) and T M Bearden of Co G, no location.

Julius Younger Johnson was my great grandfather. He lived in Columbus, Hempstead Co., Arkansas. Some have said that many Southwestern Arkansas men went to Louisiana to enlist in CSA. I would appreciate a look-up in Film # M378 Roll 15. Thanks, Susan Tidwell Wilburn

My GG-Grandfather, volunteered the first time in 1861, but did not lie about his age (17) and was turned away. He enlisted in Monroe in March, 1862 after he turned 18 in January. After the fall of Vicksburg, he went home for a couple of months, and enlisted again, this time in Company E of the 3rd Louisiana Cavalry, where he served thru the end of the war.

Trying to find location of death and burial. Died 9/6/1862 from measles. Any help appreciated.

William Riley Takewell was a U.S. confederate soldier in the 31st La. Infantry, under the command of Sugan Jones. He served as a Pvt. in Co. K, of the 31st Louisiana Inf. En. He is listed on the roll of Camp Mayson taken on 8/1/1862. He reported in camp for exchange at Vienna, La. before April 1, 1865. Resident of Ouachita Parish, La. He was paroled at Plesant Hill, and applied for his military pension on July 30 1913, at age 66. (Application # 7819.) He received 36 dollars for his pension. William was a member of the 'Company K, Tilailleurs of St. James The regiment was organized at Camp Moore on May 15, 1862, with 804 men. The unit had originally been mustered into state service in New Orleans on December 17, 1861, as the Sumpter Regiment and was transferred to Confederate service for ninety days on March 1, 1862. Upon the evacuation of New Orleans, April 25, three and a half companies remained in the city were captured. The other six and a half companies went to Camp Moore. There General Mansfield Lovell added four new companies to bring the unit back to regimental strength. Company K went home on furlough and never returned, since the enemy controlled that portion of the state. The regiment remained at Camp Moore until August 5, when it participated in the battle of Baton Rouge. In that battle, 58 men of the regiment were killed, wounded, or missing. The remaining men marched to Port Hudson after the battle and became part of the garrison there. They did outpost and picket and helped construct the entrenchments in the area. In February, 1863, the War Department ordered the reduction of the regiment to a battalion of seven companies. On March 4, Companies H and I were disbanded and the men were distributed among other companies. The new 30th Louisiana Battalion retained the regiment's number, and records frequently call it 30th Louisiana Regiment. Colonel. Charles H. Morrison Lt. Col. Sidney H. It is not known how long he lived there. William Riley is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery South under a tree. There is no marker and all the records were destroyed in a fire

Great grandfather's brother. Enrolled on 14 APR 1862 at Monroe, Louisiana. Captured at Vicksburg and released on parole to go home to Louisiana to await exchange. He reported into parole camp prior to 1 APR 1864 to be available for exchange. At the war's end, the 31st Louisiana Infantry disbanded and went home a couple of weeks before the final surrender of the Trans-Mississippi. He reported into the Federal parole center at Monroe, Louisiana and was released on parole on 9 JUN 1865
