The 27th (Patton's) entered a PVT. prmoted a few times, to Sergeant before Vicksburg Campain. Paroled to Enterprise Ms. where his Co. became apart of the La. 22nd consolidated Infantry Regt. They saw action in Georgia. Co. E was his. Used Confederate records to confirm this.

James Daniel Rutherford was my Grandfather. He is buried in Libery Chapel Cemetery located in Panola County, Texas.

Albert was born in 1831 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. The 1860 census finds him there at age 28. The Post Office is at Clinton. He has 3 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 29 March 1862 at Camp Moore, Tangipahoa Parish, which was a very large Training Camp of Instruction. Enlisted by Lieut. D.H. Todd for the war. Albert died at this training camp on 12 June 1862, on of over 400 men who died of disease at the camp. He is buried at the Confederate Cemetery at that place.

Augustus was born 28 Aug 1839 in Baton Rouge, La. He enlisted 14th of March at Clinton, Louisiana and mustered 29 March 1862 at Camp Moore, La. by Lt. Todd for the war. This Regt. fought at Vicksburg. Assigned to the Dept of Miss & East La. It also did coastal watch duty. It was consolidated 16 Jan 1864 to become Co F in the 22nd La. Infantry [consolidated] It was paroled 22 Aug at Port Hudson and surrendered 26 May 1865. He has 13 cards in his archival file. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed. He died 6 Aug 1898 in Plaquemine, Iberville, Louisiana and is buried in the Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church cemetery in the aforementioned Parish.

Fayette was captured at Vicksburg Mississippi on July 4, 1863. Fayette was a resident of Franklin Parish, Louisiana. (later became Richland Parish) Fayette''s brother, Edwin A. Boies served with the 8th Louisiana Infantry, Company E, known as the Franklin Sharpshooters.

Children: 3-2 sons and 1 daughter. Died: 9/11/1890 due to cancer. Buried: Richland Parish, LA. GGF Durham and his older brother Thomas Bozeman enlisted in Co. F, 27th Louisiana Infantry and fought at Vicksburg. Both survived, and lived many years. John P. Durham died in the 1930s.

JONES James W. Jones, president of the Farmers' Alliance of Natchitoches Parish, was born in Georgia, December 18, 1838, and passed his boyhood and youth under the parental roof. In 1859 he came to Louisiana, and settled in what is now Grant Parish, where he made his home until 1887, when he moved to his present place of residence in Natchitoches Parish, one and a half miles from the city. In 1861 he joined Company C, or what was known at the Winn Rifles, rose to the position of second lieutenant, and was a brave and efficient officer, serving until the close of the war. He was wounded at the battle of Vicksburg. Since the war he has been engaged in farming and has made a success of this occupation, as a glance over his well kept place will clearly indicate to the beholder. He took a leading part in the Grange movement, and has always taken the same kind of interest in the Farmers' Alliance movement. In July, 1890 he was elected president of the last named organization of this parish, and is eminently fitted for that position. He was married in the year 1863, to Miss Annie M. Dobbs, who was born in Marietta, Ga., in 1842. They have five children who are named as follows: Rowena, Lillie, James R., Hattie and Ernest W. Mr. Jones is a close adherent to Democratic principles, and socially is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Phoenix Lodge No. 38 of this city. He joined this society in Montgomery, La, and for about four years was master of Lodge No. 168 of that place. He and Mrs. Jones are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Jones was the eldest of four children, three now living, born to James and Harriet (Cooper) Jones, natives of Georgia and Virginia, respectively. The father died in his native State, in 1839, when about thirty years of age, and the mother also died in that State, in 1847, when about twenty eight or thirty years of age. The maternal grandfather of our subject, Rev. John W. Cooper, was a minister in the Baptist church for about thirty five or forty years. He died in Georgia, in 1849, at the age of seventy years. Natchitoches Times J.W. Jones Jas. W. Jones, Friday March 1, 1918 at 2:00 A.M., Aged 79 years. Mr. Jones, who was a native of Georgia, was born in 1839 and in 1861 joined Co. C. of that state and served all during the Civil War with honor, rising to the rank of Second Lieutenant. After the war he married Miss Anna Dobbs and to this union six children were born, three of whom survive. They are Mrs. Albert Bri- lari of Little Rock, E.W. Jones of Shreveport, and Jas. R. Jones of Oakdale. The deceased settled in Grant Parish after the War, moving to Nat- chitoches in 1877, where he since resided. His funeral was held on Friday af- ternoon with internment in Ameri- can Cemetery. The religious cere- mony was held at the First Baptist Church of which he has always been a consistant member. Phoenix Lodge , No. 38, F. & A.M. conduc- ted the Masonic ceremony at the grave. The deceased was a kind and de- voted husband and father, a true friend of the sick and needy and af- ter a long, honorable and useful life has gone to claim his reward, hearing those consoling words, 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant'. To his bereaved wife, who was ever his devoted helpmeet, and child- ren, the 'Times' extends great sym- pathy.

He enlisted May 7, 1862, at the age of 29 in the Winn Rifles. He was present until captured at Vicksburg, MS, on 4 July 1863, and was paroled at Vicksburg, MS on 7 July, 1863. He reported for exchange at Shreveport, LA, on 1 April 1864. His command surrendered at New Orleans, LA, on 26 May 1865, and he was paroled at Monroe, LA, on June 12, 1865, and returned to his residence in Winn Parish, LA.

Siege of Vicksburg; my great-grandfather

CORDAWAY, MANUEL (1834 ~ 1910). Manuel Cordaway, Confederate veteran, was born in Louisiana in 1834. Not much is known about Cordaway's life before the Civil War, although Confederate Home Roster records indicate he made his living as a farmer. . On March 20, 1862, Cordaway enlisted in the Confederate States Army in New Orleans and was mustered into the 27th Louisiana Infantry. The 27th Louisiana Infantry served at the Battle of Vicksburg, but took heavy losses and was later consolidated into other Louisiana Infantry regiments. Cordaway was taken by United States Army forces and was made to sign a declaration that he would never take up arms against the United States again. According to Compiled Military Service Records, Cordaway continued to serve in the Confederate Army, as his name is present on a prisoner of war list from New Orleans. Cordaway was present when a group of Confederate soldiers surrendered to Union forces in New Orleans at the end of the war in May of 1865. He was released in June of the same year.. Cordaway moved to Texas in 1895 and took up residence in Riviera, Nueces County, Texas. Cordaway was admitted to the Confederate Veterans Home on July 12, 1910. He died 15 days later and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.

Federal rolls of Prisoners of war. Captured & paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863

Private Young William Rogers was my great-great grandfather. He was the last surviving member of Co G of the 27th La Infantry (see newspaper article from The Champion, newspaper from my hometown of Center, Texas dated February 12, 1930). He and a brother, Private James Wooten Rogers, and a cousin, Lt. Giles N. Graves all were sworn in the service at Metairie Race Track on March 20, 1862 by Lt. D.H. Todd, half-brother of Mary Todd Lincoln. Perhaps latter privates Peyton Graves Rogers and Y.W. (Billy) Graves were recruited and joined the unit. Young William Rogers fought at the Battle of Vicksburg receiving a wound to the thigh. I have extensive research and documentation regarding this unit.

Peter was 26 years old when he enlisted and was mustered at New Orleans on 22 March 1862. Elected as 1st Sgt. On 22 May 1863 elected to 3rd Lient. and 2nd [Jr.] Lt by Col. L. D. Marrs. In July 1862 he is in camp at Camp Norwood near Vicksburg, Miss sick. Captured at Vicksburg on 2 July 1863 and exchanged at Shreveport La. on 1 April 1864. He is related to me by marriage.
