8th Missouri Cavalry

Peter enlisted as a Private soldier in Jeffers Regiment Company G of the 8th Missouri Calvery CSA. He was captured while on Christmas furlough in December of 1862. Peter was later listed on the Regiment muster roll as deserted known to have take oath to the Yankees.

Enlisted in Cape Girardeau County, MO in 1862. Surrendered and was paroled in May / June 1865 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Returned home. Died and is buried in Daisy, Missouri.

Jonas Marion Snider served in the Missouri State Guard as a Captain in the 4th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division prior to enlisting as a Private in CO A on 17 August 1862 in Bollinger County at age 27, elected Junior 2nd Lt on 31 August 1862, Captured as a POW on 13 April 1863, sent to St. Louis & then Alton Prison where he was paroled and sent home to join the Missouri State Militia (Union.) He was born on 15 August 1837 as the s/o Martin Snider and Margaret Eaker & was b/o William H. Snider & h/o Sarah M. Stephens.

Listed in Prison records as 6'0', hazel eyes, dark hair. 1st sent to McDowell College, forwarded to Gratiot, Alton and Camp Douglas. s/o Martin Snider and Margaret Eaker, brother to Jonas Marion Snider. born: 2 January 1835, died 22 September 1868 due to harsh conditions at Camp Douglas. William married Cordelia L. Estes.

First enlisted as private, became sergeant in 2nd Cav Reg Com. by William Jeffers; 8th Mo. Cav. Reg State Guard, as private and then promoted to 2nd Lt. Co. B and Commanding Officer of Co. A & B.

Thomas S Priday was my GT.GT.grandfather he served in the Jeffers Regiment Mo.8th.Calvary company C.(1862-1865)Looking for any info anybody might have.

Robert's age at enlistment is incorrect, Robert was born 1830 in Hamilton County, OH moved with family to Jackson, Missouri in 1840 and married Temperance English in 1859. Robert would survive the war and die at Jonesboro, IL in 1872.

Age 24, Enlisted Sept. 22nd 1862 in Cape Girardeau County Missouri, Died March 15th 1877. Buried in the Shultz Family cemetery in Cape Girardeau County Missouri

Joseph enlisted as a Private in CO D on 22 September 1862 in Cape Girardeau County Missouri at age 19 He was paroled on 7 June 1865 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Joseph was born in 1843 in Cape Girardeau County as the son of William Fountain and Hulda (Dempsey) Whitledge.

Samuel enlisted as a Private in CO D on 22 September 1862 in Cape Girardeau County Missouri at age 23. He was paroled on 7 June 1865 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Samuel was born on 15 Nov 1839 in Cape Girardeau County and died of wounds from the war on 13 August 1866 in Perry County Missouri. He was the son of Persichlas Hampton and Mary Rachel (Wilson Whitledge.

James Washington Smith (1842-1910) made a note of his war record in a portfolio he captured in Arkansas in 1862 with a pen captured in Glasgow (Missouri) in 1864. He served in Col. Jeffers’ Regiment (8th MO Cavalry), Marmaduke’s Brigade, Marmaduke’s Division. Additional information about his service was contained in a typed note found in packet of letters belonging to Alf Smith, probably written by one of J.W. Smith’s nieces, Hortense and Mildred Smith. Joined 9/27/1862 in Cape Girardeau Co, MO, appointed First Sergeant 10/8/1862. He deserted (!) 8/18/1863, along with numerous other members of his company, apparently because they were dismounted and being transferred to the infantry. The FULTON COUNTY HISTORY (Kentucky) says he served in the 3rd Kentucky Regiment, CSA, so he probably returned to his home in Graves Co, KY to re-join there.
