Andrew Jackson Thornton was born in Buchanan County, Missouri in 1845. Andrew Jackson Thornton and his bother Daniel B. Thornton were farming and working at their father's blacksmith shop near Arrow Rock, in Saline County Missouri. The Thornton brothers were conscripted by Confederate cavalrymen of Colonel Wood's command on October 16, 1864. The two brothers participated in the raid (probably more as spectators) and the ensuing fights including the battle of Westport. After what must have been a terrifying ride of several weeks under enemy fire, on short (sometimes non-existent) rations in wet and freezing weather the Thornton bothers slipped away from Price's army one night after crossing the Arkansas River. Daniel and Andrew surrendered to the Federal garrison at Fort Smith on November 8th, 1864.

Daniel B. Thornton was born in Buchanan County, Missouri in 1840. Daniel Thornton and his brother Andrew Jackson Thornton were swept up in Price's 1864 Missouri Raid. 'About 10 or 15 men of Col. Woods Cavalry came to my house and told me to come along with them as I was conscripted.' The Thornton brothers were sworn into the Confederate Army at Arrow Rock on October 16th. Though they are listed as being assigned to Searcy's Battalion I suspect they were mounted and placed in Tyler's Brigade of unarmed recruits. Daniel and Andrew witnessed the daily battles and skirmishes with Pleasonton's and Blunt's Union cavalry up to and including the battle of Westport. After Price's defeat and dismal retreat south the Thornton brothers slipped away from what was left of Price's starving army and surrendered to Union forces at Fort Smith, Arkansas on November 8th, 1864.
