My great-grandfather. Member of Company A, 10th Battalion NC Heavy Artillery. This company was organized in Davidson County, NC on April 23, 1862 and mustered in at Wilmington, NC on May 19, 1862. Served in the defenses around Wilmington until November of 1864, when assigned to McLaw's division to stop Sherman's Union Army from uniting with Grant's army in Virginia. Fought at the battles of Averasboro and Bentonville in NC as part of Hardy's brigade in McLaw's division. Surrendered as part of Joseph Johnston's army to Sherman in April of 1865. Born December 9, 1839 in Montgomery County, NC and grew up in Thomasville, NC, working as a shoemaker when he joined the Confederate Army. After the war he lived in Thomasville and High Point, NC. He died on June 16, 1916 at age of 76. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in High Point.

Barnabas Edwards 1848-1923 was the oldest child of William Edwards 1825-1894 & Rachel Roberts Edwards 1830-1872 of NC & SC. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cem., Thomasville, GA. He married Susan Ann Kirton 1849-1922 of Horry, SC. Barnabas enlisted in Brunswick, NC as an Horry, SC resident. His younger brother (Gabriel Edwards) was my GG-grandfather.

William was born 12 Aug 1840 on Russell's Creek, Beaufort Co. NC. He was enlisted on 20 March 1864 at Camp Branch NC by T.B. Haskett for the war. He and his brother David were in the fight at Plymouth on the Roanoke River, NC. After that fight the unit was disbanded. He and his brother were moved to Fort Clifton Va. He has 7 cards in his archival file, the last of which notes that he is present in his company Feb. 1865. He and his brother survived the war. He died 14 Sep 1903 and is buried in the Russell family cemetery in Beaufort, NC

Joseph was born 11 Dec 1838 in Carteret County NC. He enlisted at Beauford NC by Lt Col. Stephen D Pool. He was described as being 23 years old, a merchant being 5 foot 6 inches tall. His records: Jan - Feb 1863 absent as Overseer of Negros at Whitehall. Mar - Jun 1863 absent as Overseer for works at Kinston, NC. Jan - Feb 1864 detailed at Regimental HQ at Goldsboro. Jan - Feb 1865 detailed as scout in Dept of NC. After the battle at Plymouth in Washington County NC fought 17 - 20 April 1864, Co H was disbanded. Joseph died 7 Nov 1913 and is buried at Old Smithfield Cem. at Southport, Smithfield Twp, Brunswick Co. NC.

David followed his brother John Brenner into service; Enlisted in Co C 1st NC Arty. 15 July 1861 and was in training at Camp Advance. He was transferred to Co H 1st NC Heavy artillery 21 Aug 1861. Captured at Fort Macon, NC and paroled 22 Apr 1862. He was on detached duty several times as an engineer working on bridges along the coastal area. His unit was deactivated after the battle of Plymouth NC 17 -20 April 1864 and transferred to Va. On 31 Dec he is on duty at Fort Clifton Va. At some point the Regiment disbanded and the men were scattered to various units including Cavalry and Infantry. Their last stand was at Averysbury and Bentonville. NC. He married Margaret B Chadwick and he died 6 Jan 1915. He fought the good fight.

John was 26 when he enlisted at Kinston, Carteret Co. NC on 20 March 1863. This unit consisted of 10 Companies A,C,D,E, & I were Light Artillery.B,F,G,H, & K were Heavy Artillery. Also known as 10 Regiment North Carolina Troops. John was in Co H and served most of his time at Wilmington, SC with a short stint at Charleston,SC. Co H was disbanded after the battle of Plymouth and the men were assigned to the Army of Tennessee. Some went to Calvary units and Infantry. The fought at the battles of Averysboro and Bentonville, North Carolina. We are distantly related by marriage.

Joseph was 18 when he enlisted at Beaufort, Carteret County, NC on 25 May 1861. Mustered 15 July. Captured and paroled at Fort Mason, NC 26 Apr 1862. He was promoted to full Corporal 30 Sept 1863. His unit was disbanded after the battle of Plymouth. The troops were reassigned as Cavalry & Infantry. Their last battles were Averysboro and Bentonville, NC. We are distantly related by marriage.
