Enlisted in 2nd NC Mounted Inf Sept. 25, 1863 at age 35 ,height 5ft 7in ,blue eyes ,Fair hair,Wheel Wright from Buncombe Co NC. Recruited by Capt Kirk along with his brother Lorenzo Dow Beachboard. Paid to enlist $300,which encluded horse,rifle,gear. Capt Kirk broke off from 2nd NC Mounted and formed 3rd NC Mounted. Alex was listed as a deserter but was reinstated by a n act of Congress March 26 1869.He was granted a pension of $12 month.Brother Lorenzo returned to 2nd NC and was reinstated and given back pay. Note they also had 2 brothers who fought for the CSA. Mathew Anthony and George W.

Buried at John Johnson Cemetery in Avery County, N.C.Died in 1903.

(2) Mary Elizabeth Varnum, 7/3/1879 in Altoona, Wilson County, Kansas. Wm enlisted 7/24/1864, Elizabethtown, Tn. Traveled West after the war and was part of the 1st land rush in Oklahoma in 1889.

The proof is based on a Widow's Pension application made in 1890 by Fannie Wacaster.

John Calvin deserted from the 48th Virginia in early April 1864 after two years valant service in the 48th Virginia Infantry CSA. He joined the 3rd NC USA 3 Jul 1864 and served until his discharge 8 August 1865. His brother James was a sergeant in Co. B.

John Henry was originally in the 29th NC Company B CSA. He was under the command of his brother-in-law William B Creasman. He 'went over' in 1864

Born 1837 in Buncombe Co., N.C.; Died 1922 in Henderson Co., N.C. Brother of my 3rd great-grandfather, Charles H. Cagle. Both of James' brothers fought for the South.

Jonas C. Killian is my great, great grandfather. He was born in Lincoln Co., NC in 1827 and died in 1892. He had five sons. As a side note, I published a text in 2000, THE HISTORY OF THE THIRD NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTED INFANTRY VOLUNTEERS, USA.The book is out of print, but was published by Heritage Press. The book contains the complete known list of the members of the 3rd NC Mounted Infantry, about 900 men.

Isaac is my g.g.great-grandfather. His footstone at his grave is the shield of the Grand Army of the Republic. I have found his pension info, and record of his grave marker through Ancestry.com.

3rd great paternal grandfather. Born in Pensacola, Yancey County, North Carolina.

Soloman's last name has been spelled Bangus and Bargus in differnt publications. Soloman was from Wilkes Co, NC. He and about a dozen other Wilks County boys went AWOL while in the Deep Gap area. Lee had already surrendered and home was just off the mountain. I dont blame them. Now buried in NW Ashe county, NC. Phillip Carpenter also listed here was my Step 3rd Great Grandfather (No blood but got his last name)

Youngest son of Alfred Squire Miller and Jane Copeland Miller of Wilkes, (later Watauga) County, North Carolina. Born 12 Jun 1846 in Watauga County, NC. Enlisted and mustered on 6/1/1864 at Knoxville, TN as a Private into 'I' Co. NC 3rd Mtd Infantry Union Volunteers. Discharged 12/30/1865. Died 20 Jun 1914 in Custer County, Oklahoma.

Zephaniah McCourry and his son Tillman were both in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry, Zephaniah was also in the 58th Regt' North Carolina State Troops before they switched sides.

My Great-great-grand father was also in the 58th NCST, 5th NC Cavalry Battalion (CSA), 6th NC Cavalry (CSA). He was also a POW at Camp Chase and Point Lookout. His father Zephaniah McCourry was also in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted as a Corporal.
