On 6 August 1861 he enlisted in Company F, 13th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Regiment formed in Garysburg. He was promoted to sergeant on 3 December 1862 and first sergeant on 17 April 1863. First Sergeant Penry was killed in action at the Battle of Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863, presumably during the 13th's efforts to push the Yankees away from Fairview.

William was born in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co. NC 15 Mar 1832 He enlisted at age 27 on 20 May 1861 at Ranalesburg, by W.A. Pressly in Capt A.A. Ewin's Co 3rd Regiment NC Infantry Vols. This units was changed to Co B 13th Regiment NC Infantry on 14 Nov 1861. William was engaged in over 20 major battles until 28 Dec 1864 when he is retired and assigned by SO#24 to the Invalid Corps. His Regimental Roster gives the last battle on the Petersburg line was as Harmon Road where the union breached the line. It is suggested that he was wounded and assigned to the Invalid Corps. He is the father in law of stepdaughter of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed. He died 23 June 1911 and is buried in Raleigh, Wake Co. NC

James C Rash enlisted in co. 'C' 13th regiment in Wilkes County Nc. On Sept. 20 1862. He was wounded by a rifle shot that entered thru the abdomen and exited out the left hip. , he was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3rd 1863. Left on the field and captured. He was held in a POW camp for several months before being released,by this time he couldn`t walk without assistance. After release from POW camp,Pvt Rash was sent to the General hospital in Petersburg Va. for treatment, he remained there until Sept. 4th 1863 and was furloughed for 40 days to return home and recuperate. May 20 1885 James applied for and was awarded a pension from the state of NC. James Rash is a cousin.

My g-g-g grandfather, Franklin Redman, volunteered with the 52nd NC in March of 1862 and was discharged in May of 1862 due to the conscript laws stating he was too old. He later re enlisted with the 13th NC and continued the fight for freedom until parolled at Appomattox.

Henry was a 27 year old farmer from Richmond Co. NC when he enlisted 30 May 1861. His parents were James Thomas and Charlotte Roper. It appears he first enlisted in Co. D 13th NC Vol's as he appears on a Report of sick and wounded for that unit dated Sept. 1861 and he died 22 Sept of 1861 of Typhoid Fever. This report was dated at Camp Gaston near the Court House of Fairfax Va. Another card says he died at Camp Ellis Va. It is reported that he was in Co. D 23rd NC Regt, and documentation may indicate that. However, Noted in the CMR data states that ' The designation of this unit was changed from the 13th Regt. NC Inf. NC Vol's to the 23rd Regt NC Inf. [State Troops ] by S.O. 222 on Nov. 14th 1861. some weeks after Henry's death.

Mustered in as Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant on October 15, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Williamsburg, Virginia May 5, 1862. Rejoined the company in November-December, 1862. And present or accounted for until wounded in the left shoulder at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Reported absent wounded until captured by the enemy at Tarboro on June 21, 1863. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he was paroled on August 4, 1863. Rejoined the company in September-October, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 18, 1864. Reported absent wounded through October, 1864. Captured in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865, and confined at Libby Prison, Richmond, until transferred to Newport News, Virginia, April 23,1865. Released at Newport News on June 30, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. North Carolina Troops 1861 -1865 Volume V page349 Addenda states he was wounded in the thigh at Spottsylvania Court House ,Virginia May 18, 1864.

My g.g.grandfather, Joseph Hunter Keel, was mustered into service on May 8, 1861 in Edgecombe County, NC. He was wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa. He returned to service and is listed on the Official Paroles at Appomattox, Va.

Albert was born in Stoneville, Mayo Twp Rockingham County NC. He has 36 items in his archival file. He enlisted 10 May 1861 as a Pvt. Co H. 3rd Regiment NC Inf. in Capt. Alfre M. Scale' Co. NC Vols., known as the "Rockingham Guards". He mustered at Garysburg on the 18th. This unit was redesignated as Co. H 13th NC Infantry. Battles: New Bern, NC, Seven Days, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gum Swamp, Bristo Station, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and North Anna. These last two battles took place 8 thru 26 May 1864. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and was admitted to the hospital at Richmond on the 24th of May 1864. He is paid $52 and sent home on a 60-day furlough beginning the 3rd of June. He recovers and rejoins his company. He is promoted to 4th Sgt 1 Oct 1864. He is captured near Petersburg 25 March 1865 and sent to Lookout Point Maryland. He is released 24 June 1865 after taking the oath or as the Confederates called it "Swallowing the Yellow Dog" He died in 1907 and is buried in the Carter Cemetery, Stoneville, Rockingham County, NC. He was my 5th cousin 4 x removed.

Thomas was born in 1838 in Stoneville, Mayo Twp, Rockingham Co. NC. He has 6 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 13 May 1861 from Wentworth in his home county by Col. W.D. Pender in Capt. Thomas Settle's Co. [ Rockingham Rangers] Mustered at Garysburg, 18 May. [ in hospital sick] Discharged soon after for bad health on either 3 July or 3 August 1861.

Enlisted 9-27-62 at Wake Co NC . Private age 37. POW 4-2-65 at Southside Railroad Va. Imprisoned at Hart's Island NY Harbor where took Oath Of Allegiance on 6-18-65.Died 25 Nov 1892 Buried at Salem Lutheran Church ,Taylorsville ,Alexander Co. NC.

John was born 30 Aug 1824 near Wentworth, Wentworth Twp, Rockingham County, NC. The 1860 census finds him there at age 35. He has 14 items in his archival record. Elected to the rank at enlistment of 2nd Sgt. He enlisted for 12 months on 3 May 1861 in Thomas Settle's Co. [then the 3rd Regt] The Regt's designation was changed to the 13th in Nov of 1861. 1 July he is on detached duty escorting the corpse of Calvin Trox____, home in NC. He is discharged under the Conscription Act and paid $50+. At the time of discharge, he was serving in Colston's Brigade, Longstreet's Division, Army of Northern Va. His records show that he rejoined his company because he appears on the list of POW's released at Farmville, Va during the period of 11 - 21 April 1865. He was the Father-in-law of my 5th cousin 4 x removed. He died 23 Jan 1904 in Wentworth, NC and is buried at that place in the Methodist Church.

My g,g, grandfather, David Land enlisted 2/14/64 ( probably about to be conscripted,he was married with several children ) and was mustered into Co.I 13th North Carolina Inf. at Camp Vance, near Morganton, N.C. P.O.W. on 4/2/1865 Southside Railroad, Va. '' Processed '' at City Point, Va. 4/7/1865. Among the first prisoners to arrive at Hart''s Island, New York Harbor. Held there till 6/19/1865. Released after taking the Oath of allegiance. Family Oral History says he '' Walked back to North Carolina barefoot. '' Promotions: Corpl. on or about 11/30/1864. David Land Residence Wilkes County NC; Enlisted on 2/14/64 at Camp Vance, NC as a Private. On 2/14/64 he mustered into 'I' Co. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Rockingham, County, NC, May 16, 1861 he enlisted in the 13th NC regiment Company I. He was discharged August 1, 1862 by reason of be overage. He was paroled at Greensbore on May 18, 1865. He stated he was wounded in the leg at the battle of Appomatox, VA.
