Attempt to locate a burial location points to the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg, Va where a burial site for a Pvt C Williams from the NC 22nd. I feel that this is my Great Great-Grandfather but would like to locate additional data that affirms his burial site.

Captain George H. Gardin, a prominent citizen and Confederate soldier of McDowell county, of which he is a native, was born in 1843, the son of Henry Gardin. He enlisted in the Confederate service on May 1, 1861, as a private in Company B, Twenty-second regiment, North Carolina troops. From the ranks he gradually rose by promotion, on account of gallant and faithful service, until in the fall of 1862 he became captain of his company, the rank in which he served until the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia. During 1861 he served at Evansville, on the Potomac river; in the spring of 1862 was on duty at Yorktown, and after the retreat of Magruder participated in the battle of Seven Pines. During the campaign before Richmond under General Lee, in June, 1862, he was captured at Fair Oaks and thence carried to Washington city, where he was held as a prisoner for six weeks. After being exchanged he rejoined his company at Winchester in the Shenandoah valley and next met the enemy at Fredericksburg. He fought with Jackson at Chancellorsville, being not far from the general at the time he was wounded, and at Gettysburg participated in the gallant charges of his regiment on the first and third days of the battle. During the bloody struggles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House and Cold Harbor, he was identified with the gallant record of General Scales' North Carolina brigade. He served on the Petersburg lines throughout the fall and winter of 1864, and in the spring of 1865 participated in the battle of Five Forks and the skirmishes of the retreat to Appomattox, where he was paroled. Upon his return to North Carolina he engaged in farming, which is still his occupation. He has had a prominent official career in the county, serving, from 1874, two years as treasurer; in 1881 as representative in the legislature; in the same office again in 1885, and from 1890 to 1897 as sheriff of the county. He was married in 1866 to Ellen F., daughter of Alexander Tate. She died in 1894, leaving seven children: Anna Laura, wife of G. W. Connally; Martha H., wife of Maj. A. My Great-grandfather. Originally from Rockingham county, he enlisted at age 16 along with his older brother Andrew. Wounded at Frazier's Farm and lost a leg during Trimble's charge July 3, 1863.

Source: Federal Archives Record. Zachariah Chrismon enlisted as a volunteer for one year on 23 May 1861 when he was 23 years old. He was enlisted by Capt. C.C. Cole at Greensboro, NC. He was detailed to the Armory at Richmond, VA. He was paid $10.00 on 28 August 1861while sick in the Fredricksburg Hospital, his first pay since enlisting. From Nov. 1861 to 31 Oct. 1862 he served as a nurse in the hospital at Fredicksburg. Zachariah was on the Hospital Muster Roll at General Hospital No.8, 213 Main St,Richmond in Oct. 1862,having been paid by Dr. Barton, the Surgeon, on 31 Aug 1862. Zachariah was transferred back to the Ordance Dept (Armory)in Sept and remained there through Oct. 1864.He was Paroled on May 13, 1865 at Greensboro, NC as number 648 on the roll by R. Walker. Note: As of 2 Dec. Wm. A. Carrington, Surgeon adn Inspector of Hospitals recommended 'that temporary aid be sought from some intelligent man detailed as nurse' to Hospital No. 8.From this recommendation it would appear that 'nurses' were intelligent people.

'Mos' Rainey, of Caswell County, NC, enlisted in 1861 at the age of thirty-one. He was sent home the next year, 'on account of age.' However, he re-enlisted in 1864 (when the South was taking almost any male with a pulse) and was assigned to the 6th NC Cavalry. He survived the War and returned to his occupations: master machinist and distiller. He is buried in the Kerr's Chapel Baptist Church cemetery in Caswell County, next to his wife, Marie. The only thing on his tombstone, other than his name, are the words,'22 Infantry, NC Troops, CSA.'

John Emerson Strader was born October 2, 1828 in Pelham, North Carolina and died September 7, 1920 in Reidsville, North Carolina. His parents were William Christian Strader and Lucinda Lovelace. John Emerson enlisted in Wake County at age 27 in 1861. He was wounded in the back at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. He was captured at Petersburg, Virginia on April 4, 1865. He was confined at Hart's Island, New York until released around June 20, 1865. John Emerson had three brothers who fought as well (George, Robert B, and Stephen). George and Stephen were both captured during the war and held as Prisoners of War at Camp Lookout, Maryland. All four brothers survived the war.

His lieutenants were his son, John McDowell Burgin and two of his first cousins, Charles Hardy Burgin and Joseph Benjamin Burgin. The body of the company was mostly comprised of other Burgin boys and allied familes; in-laws, cousins, etc; And in as much as they were all from McDowell County, they were better known as 'The McDowell Boys.' One officer described their performance at Seven Pines thusly: 'In all my readings of veterans, and of coolness under fire, I have never conceived of anything surpassing the coolness of our men in this fight.' Captain Burgin would lose two sons during the ensuing battles. His first-born, Lt. John McDowell Burgin, died from wounds received at Gettysburg and his second-born, Private George Whitson Burgin was killed in the Battle of Gains Mill or at Mechanicsville, Virginia, June 26th or June 27th 1862. Burgin's other two lieutenants were also casualties. Charles Hardy Burgin was wounded at Shepherdstown, Virginia and died of disease & fever at Fredricksburg, Virginia. Joseph Benjamin Burgin was captured by Federal Troops near Chancellorsville (see footnote).

Joseph B. Burgin was the cousin of Alney Burgin, the commander of K Company, 22nd North Carolina Infantry and served under him during the war. There is a diary of a sort that I found online in another family tree that bears this out.

John A. Carr was the husband of Mary E. Burgin daughter of Josiah Burgin. He enlisted on June 5, 1861 and served as a Teamster. He was killed in action on August 25, 1864 at Ream's Station Virginia. He is listed elsewhere as a casualty at Gettysburg, but this is incorrect. The Confederate Records and a family bible to which I do not have access at this time both reflect his death as at Ream's Station Virginia.
