Thomas, Andrew Paul, and Horace rushing are my direct ancestors. Horace got sick early on, but Thomas and Andrew saw many great battles, including Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Thomas was wounded at Chance., and did not make Gettysburg, and glad he didn't, because the 23rd, along with most of Iverson brigade, was mauled! Andrew Paul Rushing was killed on July 1st. Stood at the burial sight at Gburg, and there is still a depression of the mass burial.

Born Abt 1824 in North Carolina to Clement Gaddy and Sarah Little. He was killed in the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 3, 1863...leaving his widow, Susan Melton, and 5 children. There is a question as to if he had a 2nd marriage to a Mary Jane Jarman (born abt 1828). Enlisted as a Private on 22 May 1861 at the age of 37. Wounded on September 17, 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD. Joel's father was born in Gulledge Township, Anson Co. NC and moved at some point to Coosa Co. Alabama. It is uncertain if his son Joel born 1838 was born in NC or Ala. however he returned to NC and enlisted 22 May 1861 at Wadesboro, NC in Co A 13th Regiment NC Infantry Vols. This unit was changed on 4 Nov 1861 to the 23rd Regiment. 10 April he is sent to the hospital at Richmond, Dx not stated. He is the fight at Williamsburg, Malvern Hill, Bull Run 2nd Manassas, Antietam, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsburg and Gettysburg. He was captured on the first day of battle and sent to Fort McHenry Md. and to Fort Delaware. He was exchanged on 30 Oct 1864. He was with his Company at end of the war. His father Joel H Gulledge served as Pvt Co I 12th Mississippi Inf. He is buried in Morven Cem, Morven, Anson Co. NC

David Andrew Hoke born in Lincoln County 13 May 1837 to Daniel Hoke and Susanna Rudisill. He enlisted in Company B, 23rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops at age 19 on 15 Mar 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded at Seven Pines, Virginia, 31 May 1862. Returned to duty and was promoted to Corporal 3 May 1863. Present and accounted for until he was reported missing and presumed dead at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1 Jul 1863. He served with his two brothers, Jonas Eli Hoke Killed at Chancellorsville and William Marcus Hoke also killed at Gettysburg. He is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed.

Jonas Eli Hoke born 18 Dec 1840 to Daniel Hoke and Susanna Rudisill in Lincoln County. He Enlisted in Company B, North Carolina 23rd Infantry Regiment on 11 Aug 1862. He was killed 03 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. He served with his brothers David Andrew Hoke and William Marcus Hoke both killed at Gettysburg Pa. He was my 2nd cousin 4 times removed.

Philip Seagle enlisted from Lincoln County in the Hog Hill Guards. B Company held the far left of the Confederate line at Chancellorsville and Philip Seagle performed well enough to be placed on the Roll of Honor and promoted to Corporal. He was wounded and taken prisoner on the first day at Gettysburg (the day after his 30th birthday) and exchanged in August of 1863. He rejoined his unit in October of that year and served through the third Battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864, when he was again wounded and taken prisoner. He lost the lower 1/3 of his right leg and was hospitalized first at Baltimore, then at Richmond. He was given a pass to return home to Lincoln County in March, 1865, and once again took up his profession as a furniture maker and woodworker. He died in 1902 at Hendersonville NC of kidney failure. Of his five sons, two became doctors, two Episcopal priests and the youngest a school book agent. His two daughters married, one an Episcopal priest and the other a Confederate veteran. He never signed a parole nor accepted a prosthetic leg from the US government. He made his own leg which is still in the family.

Edward Chester Boone was born 2 Feb 1832 in Orange County, NC. 2nd child of Andrew Boon & Jane Hobbs. He enlisted in Company C, 23rd NC infantry on 3 Sep 1862 in Iredell County at the age of 30. Parolled on 19 May 1865 at Albemarle, NC. Died on 11 Mar 1909 in Yale, Guthrie County, Iowa. He was the half brother of my 2nd great grandfather Elijah Boon of Alleghany County, NC.

Christopher was born 7 Aug 1840 in Richmond County. NC. He has 20 items in his archival file. The 1860 census finds him at age 20 in Steeles Township in aforesaid county. The Post Office is at Bostics' Mills. He enlisted 30 May 1861 at Rockingham. He was wounded at Cold Harbor on 27 June 1862 and again on 14 Sept 1862 at South Mountain. He is given a 60 day wounded leave and is paid $15 upon his return to the company for rations. He is captured at the Angle while in the fight at Spotsylvania. He is moved to the hell hole at Point Lookout in Maryland. He is pardoned 12 May 1865. He is the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. He died 20 Oct 1914 and is buried at Bear Branch Cem. Roberdell, Richmond County, NC

William was born 3 Jan 1835 in Richmond County North Carolina. He entered service as 4th Sgt on 30 May 1861 at Rockingham, Richmond Co. NC. He had attended engineering school. Promoted thru the ranks to 1st Sgt then to lieut and then to Captain. Promoted to AQM 13 Feb 1862. Enlisted by L.H. Webb for 12 months. He has 24 items in his archival file including many documents. His engineering skills were such that he was allowed to Tender his resignation and was appointed as head of operations for special construction projects. He is my 2nd cousin 3 x removed on my paternal line.

Milas was born in Salisbury, Rowan NC 4 Mar 1831. He is about 33 when he is enlisted by Capt McRay at Statesville on 6 Sept 1862. He has 30 cards in his archival file. Many are about him being disabled and assigned on light duty March 1864 as a nurse at the hospital. On 6 April he is deemed fit to return to his unit. He is in action at Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristo Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Hatchers Run, Fort Steadman and others. He married my distant cousin Huldah R Currick. They are buried at Cleveland First Baptist Ch. Cleveland, Rowan Co. NC

Presley was 21 years old from Black Jack Township, Richmond Co. NC. He enlisted 30 May 1861 at Rockingham, in aforesaid county. He was sick on and was sent home by surgeon to recover with instructions to return. He was captured twice 1st at Sharpsburg 17 Sep 1862 and exchanged at Akins Landing on 10 Nov 1862. 2nd Captured at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863 and exchanged 30 Oct. 1864. Sent home on parole furlough. Rejoined his unit. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 10 July 1862. He died in 1928 in Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi. I have not found his grave...

Edmund was 18 years old when he enlisted with his brother Thomas as a Pvt. in his home town of Rockingham, Richmond Co. NC. on 30 May 1861. He was promoted to 1st Sgt. in April 1862. Edmund was severely wounded at the battle of Seven Pines and was medically retired in Oct 1864. He moved to Clifton, Bosque Co Texas and lived to draw his Confederate Pension. Edmund and Thomas were my 2nd cousins 4 x removed.

Thomas has 31 CMR cards in his archival file. Born 27 Dec 1841 in Rockingham, Richmond Co NC. He enlisted there on 30 May 1861. He was a wagoner in Co D 23rd NC Inf. [ Capt. Coles Company]. He was wounded , [shot thru both thighs] at Malvern Hill on 1 July 1862 and died on the 17th. He died in the CSA General Hospital at Howards Grove. Record say he was in Capt. J.S.Knights Co. at the time of death. His father filed for settlement and received $142.73 cents, certificate # 2274. Thomas was my 2nd cousin 4 x removed on my fathers side.

John was born in Rhode Island in 1841 his family moved to North Carolina when he was 9 years old. He enlisted 30 May 1861 at Rockingham, Richmond County NC. At his first battle at Williamsburg Va. he was transferred to Co H and his rank was reduced to Pvt. He was engaged in some 30 major battles. He has four cards in his archival file. He married Eliza Jane Pratt and she filed for pension from her home in Groesbeck, Limestone Co. Texas. They are buried in Frankenbery Cem. Grosebeck, Limestone Co Texas. Deo Vindice

John was born in Black Jack Township, Richmond County NC. b. 22 Sep. 1838. Enlisted as 4th Corporal at Rockingham, Richmond Co. NC on 30 May 1861. Co D 23rd Infantry Regiment [State Troops] [Pee Dee Guards] Captured 31 May 1862 at Seven Pines, He is described as 5 foot 9 in, dark hair, brown eyes & dark complexion. He was exchanged and rejoined his unit. Promoted to full Sergeant Major 1 Jan 1864. He married Catherine Covington and raised a large family. died 28 Oct. 1912. Buried in th e Ussery Family Cem. at Ellerbe, Black Jack Township, Richmond Co. NC.

Henry was born in Black Jack Township, Richmond County NC in 1841. He enlisted with his brother Capt. William Covington Wall on 30 March 1861 at Rockingham, NC. He has four cards in his archival file for this unit. He was discharged by substitution 10 May 1862. He later re-enlisted as a Pvt in Co A 4th North Carolina Cavalry. He has five cards in that file. He served honorably until the end of the war. He married Mary Fanny Leak. He died 31 July 1899 and is buried beside his wife in the Leak Family cemetery near Rockingham, Richmond Co. NC

William was born 29 April 1837 in Richmond County NC. He enlisted 30 Mar 1861 as a 2nd Lieut. & promoted to 1st Lieut. 6 May 1864 and on the 10 of May to Captain. He was sighing as Company Commander. He was assigned extra duty as assistant surgeon as he was medically trained. He has 64 cards in his archival file and was present in some 22 battles including Bull Run and Gettysburg. Command was Johnson's Brigade, Early's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He was my 1st cousin 4x removed. He married Olivia Dockery and they are buried at Hernando Memorial Park in Hernando, DeSoto County, Miss. He died 2 July 1910 and she died 2 Aug 1922. He also served in 4th NC Cavalry aka 59th Regiment Nc Troops.

Was my 2x gr. uncle. He died of typhoid fever on 6 June 1862 at Winder or Chimborazo Hospital No. 3 in Richmond, Va. He was buried in an unknown section of Hollywood Cemetery Richmond, Va. His headstone was moved from Hollywood Cemetery to Oakwood Cemetery Richmond, Va. on 7 July 2014. It was determined that his remains were at this cemetery. The headstone was placed there by Sons of Confederate Veteran member Mr.Lee Hart.

I am looking for any info i can find on where my great grandfather died. I know he was assigned to F company of the 23rd Infantry Regiment North Carolina. See online book 'The Catawba Soldier of the Civil War' by Hahn Was injured in the Battle of Seven Pines by a shot that would have proven fatal if not for a Bible with brass lids that he had picked up on the battle field and carried in his pocket. Believe he continued on to fight in 'Seven Days Battle' but never really recovered from his wound so was sent home to recover.

Lawrence was born in Richmond County, North Carolina on 24 Feb 1838. He Volunteered 15 May 1862 and joined the Company in the field in Virginia. He was initially assigned to the Quartermaster Corps and on 11 Jan 1865 he is promoted to 1st Lieut. as Adjutant. He has 19 cards in his archival file. ON 29 Oct 1864 he appears on an Inspection Report dated 28 Jan 1865 signed at Hatchers Run that the is assigned to Johnson's North Carolina Brigade, Early's Division, 2nd Corps commanded by Brig. Gen. Robert D Johnson. His brother William Isaac was serving in the same regiment. He survived the invasion and died 21 Aug 1889. He is buried at the Hillside Cem aka Laurenburg Cem. at Laurrenburg, Scotland County NC. He is my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. His wife Martha Wall Covington is also related to me thru the Covington line.

First identified Confederate Soldier buried at Arlington National Cemetery later removed to North Carolina. Wounded in the leg at Spotsylanvia Court House, Va. May 12,1864, died May 30, 1864 from pyaemia after leg was amputated in a hospital in Washington DC. Resident of Catawaba Co. Born in Granville Co. 1842, William Jones moved with his family to Hanson KY sometime in the 1850s. When the war broke out, Jones (age 20) returned to Granville Co. and enlisted in Co. G 23rd NC. Likely joining his regiment at Chantilly VA sometime around Sept 2, he earned his baptism-by-fire at South Mountain on Sep 14. The 23rd joined the CSA order of battle on the morning of September 17th, on the far right flank of D.H. Hills line facing 'the Cornfield" Sometime between 8-9 am the 23rd NC was flanked in the East Woods and forced to retreat under fire to the sunken road where they fought for the remainder of the day. It's very likely that Private Jones was wounded sometime between 8- 9am, during the earlier confusion in the East Woods. Records indicate he was found on the battlefield and evacuated by federal troops, but died a few days later. His family in Kentucky never heard from him after September 17, 1862, and never learned of his fate.

Enlisted in Company H, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on June 12, 1861, Gaston County. Was wounded in The Battle At Seven Pines May 31, 1862. Was transported to Richmond hospital and died there on June 13, 1862. His body was eventually returned to Gaston County and was buried beside his mother, father and brother George P.Stowe who died of disease on May 31, 1862 at Goldsboro, North Carolina while serving with The 49th North Carolina Infantry.

Enlisted as a Private on 17 June 1861 at the age of 24. Captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. Sent to Fort McHenry, MD on 6 July 1863. Forwarded to Fort Delaware 12 July 1863. Died of small pox as a prisoner on 20 October 1863 at Fort Delaware, DE.

David Engle ( Ingle ) was my Great Grandfather.

Alonzo was the younger brother of Monroe Gabriel, and younger cousin of Abram Alburtus Gabriel. Alonzo enlisted in Company C of the 28th North Carolina, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. However, he transferred to Company K of the 23rd to be with his kin. Captured at Hanover Courthouse and exchanged. Captured on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg PA, confined at Fort Delaware, then exchanged in August 1863. Returned to his unit. Killed at age 19 at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA, on May 9, 1864.

Enlisted 22 June 1861. Reportedly captured a Yankee brigadier at Chancellorsville, for which he was promoted to Corporal. Captured on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Confined for the remainder of the war at Fort Delaware prison. Released 19 June 1865. Extensive records in national archives. Record included in Weymouth Jordan's 'North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865.'

James Nixon (my g grandfather) was born in 1843, joined Co. K in Iredell Co. on 20 Aug, 1862. He was wounded and captured on 3 May 1863 and paroled at the end of May. He was wounded and captured at Cedar Creek , October 1864, and sent to prison in Washington. He was paroled in Charlotte in June 1865.
