Private Starling E. Temple was born 9 Sept. 1827, Johnston County, North Carolina. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Massengill. He enlisted in Company D of the 24th. Regiment at Camp Holmes, Wake County, North Carolina on 16 October 1864. He was present or accounted for through February 1865. He returned home where he died 7 July 1893.

Green was born in Wake Co. NC. He Enlisted at Camp Maugum near Raleigh on 16 July 1862. He has 14 cards in his archival file. In July of 1864 he is sick in the hospital at Richmond, Va. He is captured at the battle of Five Forks Va. on 1 April 1865 and taken to Point Lookout, Md. He is released at City Point on 23 June 1865 after 'Swallowing the Yellow Dog"... he is described as 5 foot 9 inches tall with hazel eyes, dark complexion and black hair. He died 11 Nov 1899 and is buried at Mount Moriah UMC Church Cem. in New Salem Twp. Union Co. NC. We are related by a distant marriage.

Harris Daniel [1825-1886] enlisted September 25, 1864, in Nash County, NC, in the 24th Infantry Regiment, and was one of the original 'Cumberland Ploughboys.' He was captured near Fort Stedman, VA and then sent as a POW to Point Lookout, Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance and was released from custody on June 26, 1865. His parents were David Daniel and Sarah Fulghum. He was married to Mourning J. Tisdale. He is buried in the Daniel family cemetery on Claude Lewis Road in Middlesex, NC.

Born 1836 – May 10, 1865 Enlisted Jun 1, 1861 at age 24. He was taken prisoner on Jun 17, 1864 at Petersburg VA., He was confined at Point Lookout Maryland on Jun 19, 1864. He transferred to Elmira on July 27, 1864 and died there from chronic diarrhea. Captured at Five Forks on Apr 1, 1865 and arrived at City Point on Apr 5, 1865. He was released from Point Lookout Md on Jun 27, 1865 after taken the oath of allegiance. Silimon was born 25 Dec 1843 in Maxton, Robeson Co. NC. He has 5 cards in his archival file. He is 16 in 1860. He is enlisted by Capt McIver for 3 years in Robeson Co. on 20 Mar 1864 and musters with his regiment at Weldon, NC. He is captured about a year later on 25 Mar 1865 near Petersburg at the battle of Fort Steadman. He is takes POW to Point Lookout Md and released 15 May 1865. He is assigned to Ransom's Brigade. Battles: Drewry's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Petersburg Siege, Globe Tavern aka 2nd battle of Weldon Railroad. We are related by a distant marriage. He died 15 Jun 1915 in Latta, Dillon Co. SC and buried in that town in Magnolia Cem.

My great great grandfather was born in NC, but moved to Texas with an uncle. Joined the 1st Texas infantry regiment there, served two years with the Texas brigade, then transferd to the 24th NC infantry in the spring of 1863. Was taken prisoner on March 25, 1865.

Private Johsua Canaday, a resident of Johnston County, North Carolina, at the age of 23, enlisted in the Confederate Army on 15 April 1862 at Hertford County, North Carolina. May-June 1863, he was arrested for desertion, but was reported present for duty November-December 1863. He remained with his unit until he was killed in defense of his homeland 18 April 1864, at Plymouth, North Carolina.

Burl enlisted in Harnett County on Jan. 31, 1862 at the age of 21. On June 27, 1864 he was wounded at Petersburg, Va. On July 3, 1903 he filed for a pension for his wounds and receiced 300.00 annually. Burwell was my g-grandfather. He was the father of my grandmother Florence (Hodges) Monds.

Enlisted 17 June 1861; got home only 1 time after enlisting...died at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862. Body not recovered; most likely buried by Union troops in common grave following the battle. Memorial headstone with his and wife's name/remains in Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton, NC. Wife died in March 1863 when accidentally shot by 14 year old boy who was squirrel hunting. Five children were left and evidently raised by relatives.

Albert is my 3rd cousin. He enlisted June 17, 1861 at Louisberg, North Carolina and died at Pettigrew General Hospital No. 13, in Raleigh, North Carolina on June 21, 1862. He died of Pneumonia and Thyphoid Fever.

14th North Carolina Volunteers became the 24th Regiment of North Carolina Troops when the reorganization under the Confederate Government took place. William Boyd Wheless lived in Franklin County, near Louisburg. He was in an out of the hospital during the war with dysentery, but apparently was at Sharpsburg, Md. and the seige at Petersburg. The 24th N.C. was sitting atop the infamous Crater when it was detonated by Union Troops.
