31st North Carolina Infantry

Appointed Adjutant 12-20-62. Joined regt. around Jan 22, 1863. Wounded in stomach at Cold Harbor 6-1-64. Was absent for wounds until Nov. 64. Surrendered in May 1865. Returned home and became a prosperous Cotton broker. Died 1916. Was engaged at Ft. Wagner, Drewery's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor and Fort Fisher.

John was born 30 Dec 1840 in Robeson Co. NC. He has 38 cards in his archival file. The 1860 census gives his age as 20. He enlists as a Pvt and ends his service as a 2nd Lt. He enlists 24 April 1861 in Co F 31st Regiment. He is sent to his unit stationed on Roanoke Island Va. where on Feb 1862 he is captured and exchanged. On 31 Dec 1861 he is transferred to Co A Capt. Godwin's Co. of same regt. On 9 Feb 1863 he is appointed as 2nd Corporal and on 30 May 1863 he is elected to 2nd Lt., John suffers bad health and is plagued with Chronic Nephritis for which he is hospitalized and furloughed several times. Battles: White Hall Ferry, Battery Wagner, Drewry's Bluff, Petersburg Siege, Globe Tavern and Fort Harrison on 29 Sept 1864. He is captured the following day on the 30th in the failed counterattack on the Fort. This is 8 miles SE of Richmond. The 31st was assigned to Clingman's Brigade, Hoke's Division, commanded by Col. Hector McKethan. He was sent to the Old Capitol Prison in DC and then to City Point, Va. He was released 10 Jun 1865. After the battle of Fort Harrison, the Fort was renamed for one of the yankee officers, Fort Burnham. Lt Barnes was the father-in-law of my 1st cousin 3 x removed. He died 6 Oct 1924 in Lumber Bridge, Robeson Co. NC. May God rest his soul.

Private Peter Berry Cox , 31st North Carolina Infantry. He was married to Caroline Seago. She was the grand daughter of Isham Henry, Sr., Caroline was the daughter of Elizabeth Henry, & Reuben Henry’s niece. Reuben Henry was my GGG Grandfather. Peter joined 31st NC Infantry, Co. B on 15 September 1862 at 23 years of age. Sick with pneumonia 11 Feb. 1863 in No. 4 Hospital, Wilmington, N.C. He returned to duty 17 Feb. 1863. Fought in Thomas L. Clingman’s Brigade at Battery Wagner 18 July 1863, Fort was abandoned 7 September 1863 after fresh water supply was contaminated from the dead Union soldier’s bodies that were buried near the fort. Captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia 1 June 1864. Transferred to White House Landing, Va. Sent to Point Lookout , Md., arrived 11 June 1864. In prison at Elmira Prisoner of War Camp 17 July 1864. Died at Elmira from chronic diarrhea 16 April 1865. Buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery , Elmira, N.Y. Grave 2715

John was a 22 year old farmer from Morven, Anson County NC. He has 11 cards in his archival file. Enlisted 3 Oct 1861 from Anson Co. for 1 year. Reenlisted 15 Oct at Raleigh, Wake Co. NC. 11- 14 Oct 1862 he is in the CSA General hospital at Wilmington NC suffering from Cholera. Assigned to Clingman's Brigade, [Hokes Division] 4th Corps Army of Northern Virginia. Battles: White Hall, Battery Wagner, Cold Harbor and Bentonville, NC. He died 12 June 1915 and is buried at Morven Cem, Morven, Anson County NC beside his wife Harriett Adeline Sellers. Deo Vindice

James Columbus New(my 2nd great-grand uncle) was born in Harris, Stanly County, North Carolina on 16 April 1844 to Robert W. New(1802-1863) and Martha P. Carter(1824-1881). He enlisted as a private on 3 Oct 1861 at the age of 17 with his father Robert. James died 27 November 1923 in Anson County, North Carolina.

Robert W. New(my 3rd great-grandfather) was born on 9 July 1802 in Halifax County, Virginia to William New(1759-1848) and Mary White(1763-1850). He enlisted on 3 October 1861 in Anson County, North Carolina and died 18 November 1863 in Charleston, South Carolina. Excerpt from North Carolina Argus, 5 Mar 1863 While many about 35 to 40 years of age are trying to avoid going to war by proving and making oath that they were over 40, it is refreshing to record an instance of patriotism like the following: Robert W. NEW, aged 61, having served out his term of enlistment as a twelve month’s volunteer, on Monday last, volunteered for the war, in Co.B, 31st Regiment N.C.T.

Daniel was born at Sandy Point, Morven Township, Anson Co. NC in 1844. He was 22 years old when he enlisted in Wadesboro, Anson Co. NC on 3 Oct 1861 for one year. Enlisted by E.R. Liles. He mustered at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, Wake Co. NC on 15 Sep 1862. The delay was because his Company was captured at Roanoke Island and exchanged. He is sick in hospital at Wayside hosp # 4 at Richmond Va and sent to Winder Hosp. His Regiment was assigned to General Clingman's Brigade, Hoke's Division 4th Army Corp of Northern Virginia. Battles: captured at Roanoke Island and exchanged, White Hall, Charleston, Fort Wagner, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege & Bentonville. he married Mary Jane Boswell who was my 4th cousin 3 x removed. Probably buried at Morven Cem. Morven, Anson Co. NC.

Samuel was born in Morven Township Anson Co. NC in June 1845. He enlisted 18 Feb 1864 probably in Wadesboro, NC. He was enlisted by E. M. Streater for the war. Mustered 13 May 1864 with his Regiment which was already in Virginia. His first action was as Cold Harbor where he was captured and sent to Lookout Point Md. Then on to Elmira prison in NY. arriving 12 July 1864. He was one of 3023 POW's exchanged at Venus Point on the Savannah River Ga. on 29 Oct 1864. When his wife died in 1909 he moved to Boston, Thomas County Georgia. He died 10 Aug 1930 and is buried in Beulah Methodist Episcopal ch. Cem. south in Thomas Co. Georgia.

Charles was born near Wadesboro, Anson Co. NC 11 Dec 1842. He enlisted at age 19 on 3 Oct 1861 in Anson Co. Stationed on Roanoke Island NC where he and his company were captured 8 Feb 1862 and exchanged at Elizabeth City NC 21 Feb 1862. He reenlisted at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, Wake Co NC and captured in the battle of Cold Harbor Va on 1 June 1864. He was sent to Elmira, NY where he was released 29 May 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. He is described as being from Wadesboro, NC, Dark hair, Dark Complexion, Blue eyes, 5 ft 11 inches tall. Unit assignment was General Clingman's Brigade and saw action at Charleston SC, Battery Wagner, Drewry's Bluff, and Cold Harbor. He married twice and is buried in the cemetery that carries his fathers name. Charles Henry Ratliff Cemetery . Anson Co. NC. We are related thru a distant marriage.

Lived : Jan. 13, 1818 - Apr. 5, 1885 Born and died in Wake County, NC. Entered the War as a Musician before exiting as a Private. Captured at the battle of Roanoke Island, Feb. 8, 1862 with Co. C-G, I & K before being put on parole in Elizabeth City, NC and then officially exchanged on Aug. 21, 1862. (Direct Descendant of the, if not) The Founder of Fuquay - Varina, NC. Once called Fuquay Springs, the original land (I believe as it was told to me) was a land grant by President Washington since the Grandfather of David Crockett Fuquay was a French Soldier who had come to fight with the US in 1778 against the British until 1783. Remains with Co. C to my knowledge and fights until the surrender at Bentonville, 1865 within Clingman’s Brigade, Hoke’s Division, 1st Corps, Army of Tennessee.

From Buies Creek NC (Harnett Co) he enlisted at the age of 22 on Oct 30, 1861 along with his brother William who also served for the 31st. He was most often called by his middle name of Hawkins. He died on Sept. 15 at Summerville SC of disease most likely from the bad conditions at Fort Wagoner. I have recently been contacted by a SCV member in SC that they have information that may lead to finding his gravesite where he was reburied years later. My 2nd Great Grandmother named her son (Hawkins) to honor her brother.

A Farmer from Buies Creek NC (Harnett Co) he enlisted at the age of 24 along with his brother John on Oct. 30 1861. Captured at Roanoke Island on Feb. 8 1862 and paroled on Feb. 21 1862. Returned to duty on Sept. 15 1862. Present and accounted for through Dec. 1864. After surviving the war he came back to Buies Creek to marry Lucinda Gregory where he farmed until his death sometime in the 1890s. Beleive he is buried in the Johnson family cemetery off Tysinger rd. Lillington/Buies Creek area along with most of my ancestors, all unmarked graves.

It was the site of two American Civil War battles in the campaign known as Operations against the Defenses of Charleston in 1863, and it is considered one of the toughest beachhead defenses constructed by the Confederate army.
