48th North Carolina Infantry

Mustered in April 1862. Fought at Richmond, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. Muster roll lists as wounded in head on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg and died the next day. Was about 48 years old.

Field & Staff, 48th NC Infantry: enlisted July 11, 1862 Adjutant, age 22, resided in Wake County, North Carolina; fought with General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the conflicts at Bristoe, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania; wounded September 17th 1862 to shoulder and face at Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Died of those wounds on October 15th 1862.

My relative was ordained in the Lutheran Church in NC in 1850. He was Captain-Chaplain of Co S, 48th NC Infantry.

Elbert was born 1834 in Smith's Stanley Co NC. He was about 26 when he was conscripted as a Pvt in Co A 48th Regiment NC Inf. He has 7 cards in his archival file. He suffered from chronic diarrohea and Rheumatism. 18 Nov 1862 he is given a 30 day sick leave from the Medical Directors Office in Richmond, Va. 24 Sept 1864 he is a patient with Dx of Chronic Rheumatism and transferred [ event not given ] 1 Jan 1865. He is serving with Cook's Brigade, Heath's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. His home location is given as Olive Branch Post Office, Union Co. NC Based on his enlistment date it seems his first engagement was at Fredricksburg, Va. followed by Gum Swamp, South Anna Bridge, Bristo Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Harmon Road and Hatcher's Run to name some. He died in 1880. We are connected by a marriage to my cousin Sarah Ellen Thomas

Previously served as 1st Sergeant of Co. F, 35th Regt. NC Troops. Was appointed 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to this company [Company A, 48th NC Infantry Jan. 26, 1863]. Paroled at Greensboro, NC on or about May 1, 1865. He was on the Reunion Committee of Co. A, 48th NC Infantry in Union Co., NC, Aug 9, 1879.]

Luke was born 4 July 1832. He was conscripted 21 Aug 1862 from Union Co. NC. He is 30 years old. He has 10 cards in his archival file. His regiment was assigned to General J. G Walkers & Cooke's Brigade, Heath's Division, 3rd Corps Army of Northern Virginia. His first battle was probably at Harper's Ferry followed by Antietam, Fredricksburg, Gum Swamp, South Anna Bridge and wounded at Bristo Station Va. Type of injury not stated and disposition after being wounded. The Bristo Campaign was a running battle that began 9 Oct 1863 and ended 9 Nov 1863. He was the father in law of my cousin Mary Holly. He survived the invasion and died 29 Sept 1910. They are buried at the Holly Family Cemetery at Fairfield, Union Co. NC. [The Federal Govt. will pull a gun on you if they feel their power and position is threatened. That's what happened and could happen again..]

James enlisted 28 April 1862 in Union County NC. In Capt Turner's Co A 48th NC Infantry. He was a 26 year old farmer. He died on the battlefield at Fredricksburg Va. on 13 Dec. 1862. His wife Juliana filed for settlement on 22 April 1863. The settlement was for $40.77 cents.

John enlisted 27 Feb. 1862. He was 27 years old and a merchant from Union Co. NC. He mustered in at Camp Mangum NC on 19 April 1862. He was promoted to Sgt. in April 1864. He was wounded at Fredricksburg and again at the battle at Bristow Station. He was captured on 20 Sept. 1862 near Sharpsburg and paroled 4 Oct. 1862 at Winchester Va. He re-joined his unit and was active killing the invaders until he was again captured near Salisbury NC and sent to Camp Chase Ohio. He was paroled 12 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog.

Enlisted as a Private on 17 February 1862 at the age of 27. Promoted to Full Sergeant. Wounded at Fredericksburg and Bristow. Captured at Salisbury, NC on 12 April 1865. Sent to Louisville, KY on 29 April 1865. (Click homepage for image)

Pvt. Evans of Davidson Co. was born in 1844, Compiled Service Record shows he entered service in 1862, and was wounded at Cold Harbor in the right shoulder in 1864. He survived the war. A picture exists of Private Evans wearing a Peter Tait of Limmerick, England uniform. Grandmother remembered hearing Pvt. Evans tell of being cold and scared at Fredericksburg, and just being scared at Sharpsburg.

Jesse was my great great 2nd cousin who was conscipted at age 19 on 07/30/1862. He was captured at Frederick, MD after becoming too ill to be transported home. he was later exchanged on 11/10/1862.

John was my great great 2nd cousin who, on 06/06/1863 was conscripted into the regiment at age 33. He survived the engagements his unit was in and surrendered with Lee on 04/09/1865.

Philip Hughes was stated to have enlisted into CO B of the 48th Inf Regiment from NC on 12 Mar 1862, it is recorded he died at (French's Farm)King's School House, Virginia on 25 Jun 1862, his remains location are unknown at this time. What needs further research is, 'did he die at King's School, a 1880 census names a Philip Hughes and spouse Selia (Celia Hughes), could he have survived? 4th cousin of mine. Served with his brother William L. Hartline. At Antietam/Sharpsburg, their cousin William R. Hartline was fighting for the Union. Solomon died at Winchester, VA, 15 Oct 1862. His other brothers Paul (Powell) Hartline, David Levi Hartline, Andrew Anderson Hartline, and Adam Lester Hartline served in the 11th North Carolina, Company E.

4th cousin of mine. Killed at Antietam/Sharpsburg on 17 Sep 1862. Served with his brother Solomon A. Hartline, who died at Winchester, VA, four weeks later. At Antietam, their cousin William R. Hartline was on the other side of the field fighting for the Union. William L.D. and Solomon's other brothers Paul (Powell) Hartline, David Levi Hartline, Andrew Anderson Hartline, and Adam Lester Hartline served in 11th North Carolina, Company E.

Ancestry.com states that my ancestor -Pinckney C. Johnson - was 'Promoted to full Corporal' and I would like to find out the details of that: when promoted and where. any leads on this would be appreciated. Pinckney was on The Roll of Honor for being wounded. he served with Lee's Army from 1861 to April 2, 1865 when he was wounded in the leg that day and had it amputated at the Union Hospital at Point-of-Rocks, and died on the following day, April 3, 1865. On a Muster Card from that field hospital, his name is written in a flourishing and beautiful script, followed by the word Rebel in parenthesis. He was 38 years old.

Daniel was born in 1830 in Cabarrus Co. NC he enlisted at age 32 in Co C 48th Regiment NC Infantry. Enlisted 19 March 1862 by Thomas J Witherspoon at Salisbury Rowan Co. NC for the war. He has 9 cards in his archival file. Assigned to General's J. G. Walker's & Cook's Brigade, Heath's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Engaged at New Bern NC and then sent to Virginia. Engaged in Seven Days battle, Malvern Cliff, Malvern Hill, Harpers Ferry, Antietam, Fredricksburg, Gum Swamp, South Anna Bridge, and Bristo Station where he died in battle on 14 Oct 1863. His wife filed claim for settlement on 17 June 1864. he is the Father in Law of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed. His wife remarried a William Fredrick Lackey and is buried at Mount Ulla, Rowan Co. NC

Lieutenant James E. Austin originally enlisted in Company B, 15th NC but transferred into the 48th NC on 12/29/1862 Dates of Rank: Corporal 3/1/1863 3rd LT. 3/17/1863 1st LT. 10/14/1864 Lt. Austin was killed in action at the Battle of Fort Stedman, Virginia on 3/25/1865, just weeks before the surrender at Appomattox. Colonel Walkup's war journal notes Lt. Austin was killed leading pickets forward with Captain Richardson, and "this last gallant, brave and most efficient officer was killed heroically leading his men forward and is a very serious loss to the regiment, being one of the very best in it" His body was returned to Union County, and he is buried at the Austin family cemetery, Fairview, NC. Churchwell J. Horton, my great great grandfather, enlisted 15 March 1862, aged 38. He was assigned to E Company, N.C. 48th Infantry, on 19 April 1862. He was promoted to sergeant in July 1863, and fell at the Battle of Cold Harbor, 3 June 1864.

James Ross Lathan enlisted April 19, 1862 in Monroe, NC. and was at Camp Mangum? (sp) in Union County, North Carolina. He was 18 years old and 6 feet 1/2 inch tall and was a farmer. He was a private in Company E, 48th Regiment NC Infantry. He was on the list of prisoners of war at the Appomattox Court House in Northern Virgina on April 9, 1865 and was paroled. (Mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.) This was the date General Lee had surrendered. Soon after, he was on the receipt for clothing and evidently headed back home.

Harrison is my 2nd great-grandfather. He received a wound to his back while fighting on Marye's Hill during the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec 13th 1863. He was sent to General Hospital #20 in Richmond where he died on January 1st 1863. I have not been able to locate where he was buried.

John W Osborne was my 3rd great-uncle, brother to Harrison Osborne, my 2nd great-grandfather.

John Wm Parker was a friend of Harrison Osborne. John and Harrison enlisted at the same time. After Harrison died, John Wm brought Harrison's small pocket bible back to Harrison's wife Elizabeth. That bible is in my possession.

A.S. Ross Sr. was a farmer from Union County, N.C. He was a conscript / enlistee in Aug. 1862. He died of disease in Nov. 1862 while encamped in Culpepper, Virginia. His wife Mary Kiser Ross was expecting their son Amos Snider Ross Jr. at the time of his enlistment and death. His grandfather James Evan Ross was a participant with the N.C. Militia in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the American Revolution.

Benjamin was conscripted on 21 August 1862. Co E. 48th NC Infantry. He was 32 years old. He contracted Typhoid Fever and died at Lynchburg Virginia on 11 Nov. 1862. His wife Eliza Jane filed for sellement on 18 April 1864. The settlement was for $2.25 cents. Behjamin had $1.00 in his pocket and drew $1.25 cents for clothing.

Wiley was conscripted on 23 August 1863. He was 30 years old A farmer from Union County NC. He was a patient in the hospital 17 June 1864 in Richmond Va. The nature of his ailment or injury is not known. He was captured at Hatchers Run on 25 March 1865. Sent to City Point on the 27th and released in June 1865.

Alvis was born 16 July 1833 in New Salem Twp. Union County NC. He was conscripted into the war at Statesville, NC on 21 Aug 1862. He was about 29 y/o and on 2 Dec 1862 he is in the hospital at Charlotteville Va. suffering from Pneumonia. Some time later he was admitted again for Lumbago. He participated in dozens of major battles and was captured and taken to City Point arriving on 28 Mar 1865. He was paroled from there on 23 June 1865. His Regiment was assigned to General J.G. Walker and Cook's Brigades, Heth's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. He died 12 Mar 1912 and is buried in Zion UMC Cem. Monroe. Union Co. NC. PS: His Compamy commander in the beginning I believe was Capt. Walkup but later on his Hosp CMR it is noted that his Co. Commander was Capt. Richardson.

James was born 19 Dec 1828 in Anson Co. NC. When the invasion began he lived in Statesville, Iredell Co. NC where he was conscripted 21 Aug 1862 into Co F 48th Regiment NC Infantry. He was 33 years old. Assigned to General's J. G. Walker & Cooke's Brigades, Heth's Division 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He has 11 cards in his archival file. 13 Dec 1862 he is severely wounded in the thigh at Fredricksburg. Recovered he rejoined his company and is found again on 10 Feb 1863 in CSA hosp #20 at Richmond. Dx not noted. He is disabled and retired by general order on 3 April 1864 and assigned to the Invalid Corps. He fought at Antietam and at Fredricksburg where he was severely wounded in the thigh...He is buried at Mill Creek Baptist Ch. Cem. Unionville, Union Co. NC

Ellis C. McCain, son of Hugh McCain and Ellen Harris, was a conscript at the age of 25 at Statesville, NC on 1 August 1862. He was on furlough from his unit on 30 September 1864, and he was hospitalized from 10 December 1864 to 16 December 1864 at the 6th Div. General Hospital, Camp Winder, VA. He suffered with serious medical problems, one of which was chronic dysentery.

Age at enlistment: 17,(Lied about age, said he was 21) Died of Typhoid Fever on or around 13 SEP 1862 at the General Hospital #18 in Richmond, VA, His mother, Juliet collected $34 in back pay. His brother, Brinkley Franklin, was the captain of his regiment.

James was from Union Co. NC. He was conscripted on 21 August 1862. Joined his unit in Iredell Co and mustered in at Statesville NC. His records are few, however we know he was a patient in Wayside Hospital # 9 at Richmond and was sent to Winder Hospital on 5 July 1863. His unit was with the 3rd Division. The nature of the hospitalization is not known.

He was relaeased after swallowing the Yellow Dog on 20 June from Point Lookout.

From Chatham County, NC Enlisted as a Private on 6 March 1862 at the age of 21. Mustered in on 17 April 1862. Wounded at Ream's Station on 25 August 1864 by grape (canister) shot that entered his left arm and had to be cut out of his back. Hospitalized at Camp Winder, Richmond VA from 31 August to 30 September 1864. Captured at Hatcher's Run, VA on 1 April 1865. Sent to Point Lookout, MD on 2 April 1865. Released on 27 June 1865. Died in 1930 at age 90 in Wake County, NC

Alfred enlisted at Camp Maugum NC on 16 April 1861 and mustered in the same day. He was promoted to 3rd Sgt. He was 27 years old and stood 6 foot 2 inches tall. He was well educated. He was promoted to 1st Sgt in Jan 1863. He was captured at Hatcher's Run 31 March 1865 and sent to City Point and Point Lookout. Released on 23 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog.

Davidson was 19 years old when he enlisted of 20 March 1862 at Camp Mangum NC. He was a farmer from Union County. He is 5 foot 11 inches tall. He was severly wounded on 25 June 1862near Kings School House at the battle of Seven Pines Va.. He suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh suffering a fracture and a wound to his hand. He developed an infection and died of his wounds on 5 July 1862 at a CSA hospital.

James was born in New Salem Township, Union County NC 4 Oct 1844. His brothers Alfred Jackson & Davidson Monroe were in this Co. also. James enlisted on 20 March 1862 at age 17. He has 6 cards in his archival file. In 1860 he is listed 16 years old and the Post Office is at Jenkins Store. His CMR for Sept - Oct lists him as absent and at home on wounded furlough. He was engaged in 24 major battles. [ Note to researchers there is some confusion in the archival records between a person of the same name and a James T Austin. both of whom died in Nov in Danville, Va. James is buried in Bakersville Historical Cem, Mitchell Co NC. He is my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

Joined the 48th NC on March 15, 1862. Wounded on December 13th, 1862, at the battle of Fredricksburg (shot through the mouth) Returned to duty May 30, 1863. Promoted from 2nd LT to 1st LT on January 6, 1863 Surrendered at Appomattox, in 1865. Buried in Austin family cemetery, Fairview, Union County.

Norris was born 30 Aug 1840 in Union County NC. He has 19 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 20 March 1862 and mustered on 16 April at Camp Mangum near Raleigh, NC. Company I was commanded by Capt. Elias C Alexander. 24 Aug 1862 his is a patient at the CSA Hospital at Petersburg, Va. for several days. In Dec 1862 he is given duty as company cook. [ A Roll of Honor card in his file states the following. "Shot thru the head by accident at Goldsboro, NC." There is no follow up that explains this event. On 14 Oct 1863 he is wounded at the battle of Bristo Station. The record does not give the details. In the final assault by the federals on the Petersburg line on 2 April 1865 he is captured and taken to Point Lookout Md. arriving on the 4th. He is released on 23 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. He died 22 Sept 1892 at Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co. NC and is buried at the Biggers family cemetery at Fairview, Union Co. NC. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Commissioned as 3rd Lieutenant in Company I, NC 48th Infantry Regiment on 16 Apr 1862. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 06 Jan 1863

My documents show him to be a 5th Sergeant, but I was unable to find such rank in the above selections. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, Md (Antietam) on 9/17/62, and received a second wound (I believe at Bristoe Station, though not sure). After the war he applied for a pension. On the pension he claims that one arm is virtually useless due to war wound. He was born and lived all his life in Union County, N.C. He died in 1916 of 'Brights Disease'. He is buried in the Trulight Church Cemetery near Unionville, N.C. beside 2nd wife.

Hiram Everhart was my 3rd Great Grandfather. He enlisted on 8 August 1862 in Davidson County, North Carolina, at the age of 30, into the 48th North Carolina Regiment, Company K. He deserted on 15 August 1862, and returned to duty on 10 March 1863. Hiram was wounded in the jaw on 14 October 1863, at the Battle of Bristoe Station. He died in the hospital in Gordonsville, Virginia on 20 October 1863 of a hemorrhage. From what I understand, Hiram was buried on the grounds of the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, and later moved to Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville, Virginia.

His surname was actually 'Regan', or 'Ragan', but was misspelled. Born on September 25, 1842, died on November 8, 1905. He was wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and would be disabled by it his entire life.

He volunteered for service with the 48th N.C., on April 1, 1862. He trained at Camp Mangum in Raleigh, N.C. on April 3, 1862. On December 13, 1862, John Wimmer was in an exposed position on Marye's Heights in Fredericksburg, Va. he was shot by sharpshooters some 8 times during the day, but maintained his firing in a sitting position until he collapsed. He was left to die in a pile of bodies, until a boy heard his moans and pulled him out. He would loose and arm and a leg, retiring to the invalid corps. He was active as a Confederate Veteran in the M.W. Norfleet camp, in Winston-Salem (still an active organization SCV) Born July 27, 1832; Died August 3, 1917; his first wife Mary was born April 25, 1825; died May 14, 1888, both buried in Salem Moravian Graveyard in Winston-Salem.
