Per my uncle, Robert Falls, of Etlan, VA, Francis Marion Falls was in a prisoner of war camp at Pt. Lookout, VA in 1865. Rank and company are unknown to us. FMFalls was born 9/2/1845 and married Sarah Catherine Goforth (born 3/23/44) November 12, 1867. He died November 27, 1887.

Pvt. Daniel Setzer (1812-1907), my GGGrandfather, from Newton, Catawba County, NC. Enlisted with his eldest son in 49th NC Infantry. Served in all major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. Went home on leave with son in July 1863 after Battle of Gettysburg and did not return until 6 weeks later. Placed in 'camp confinement' until Dec 1863 then returned to full duty. Served in 1864 battles around Richmond and Petersburg, then was wounded and captured in April 1865 with his regiment in retreat just before Lee surrendered at Appomattox.

William Haney, my Great, Great, Grandfather, enlisted on March 1, 1862, at seventeen (17) years of age. He was assigned to Company A, 49th Regiment, of the North Carolina Infantry. He deserted on August 15, 1862, and returned home to get married. On April 12, 1864, he enlisted with Company H, 10th Regiment, of the Tennessee Calvary where he remained until August of 1865.

I have some letters from Pvt. William Hogan from camp at Weldon NC. I am looking for more information about this unit 1862-1864.

James was wounded at Malvern Hill and died of typhoid fever in Charlottesville, Virginia, on November 23, 1862. James was from McDowell Co., NC. He is a ggg grandfather on my mother''s side.

After being captured (where/when ?) was confined at Pt. Lookout, Maryland, released from same on June 5, 1865. Lived to a ripe old age in Golden Valley near Rutherfordton NC.

Born in August, 1840. Married Louisa Hinkle. There is an interesting family story that, before Harrison left for the war, he carved a book out of bone, and then engraved both his and Louisa Hinkle's initials in it. We call it the 'Little Bone Bible', because his initials were 'HB', like 'Holy Bible'. The Bible still survives.

Daniel Brooks(1837-1933) was a free African-American from Duncans Creek in Cleveland County, NC who felt pressured, along with his brother, Milford, to join the Confederate Army before they were conscripted. He enlisted near Shelby in 1861 along with white friends Daniel and Joseph Lattimore. Daniel was assigned to Company D of the 15th North Carolina Regiment with the Lattimore brothers. In January, 1863 Daniel's Company was transferred to the NC 49th, becoming the 2nd Company B. His duties included driving wagons, cooking and chopping trees for timber to build bridges bridges. He was at the fall of Fort Fisher on the Carolina coast and mustered out with illness afterwards. He died in High Point after serving in the Methodist ministry for many years.

Troops records say that 'On May 10, 1864 the Regiment marched to Petersburg and became part of Beauregard's Corps. On the 16th of May Beauregard crept up on Ben Butler near Drury's Bluff and Butler was forced to retreat with his Federal forces. The 49th lost heavily.' From civil war books - 'Erected south of Richmond on Drewry's Bluff of the James River, Fort Darling survived Union attempts to destroy it and kept Union warships away from Richmond until the city fell in 1865.' 'After a two week campaign, Union General Benjamin F. Butler's army was hit by a major attack from General P.G.T. Beauregard's Confederates at Drewry's Bluff on May 16, 1864, forcing Butler to withdraw and ending his offensive against Petersburg, Virginia.'

B Co. 49th Inf Regt. NC (1st) Co. D, 15th Regt. N.C. Infantry Wounded & Shipped out Dec 13, Died Dec 20, 1862 to: Liberty, VA (which is now Bedford,VA) He died from a 'fever' Do not know if the fever was from wounds at: Fredersburg or if he may have had pneomonia...but most likely from wounds he received at the Battel on Dec 13. He is not listed as far as I know on the Marker that was erected for the Civil War/soliders that were moved around the turn of the century Ms Murl Dawson-Linck

Britton Everhart was my 3rd Great Granduncle. He was conscripted in the Civil War at the age of 32, on 15 July 1862, in Wake County, North Carolina. He 1st served as a Private in 1st Company D, 15th Regiment, North Carolina Troops (5th Regiment North Carolina Volunteers). He transferred to the 49th North Carolina Regiment, Company B, North Carolina Troops on 9 January 1863. Britton was captured at Sandy Ridge (Lenoir County) on 20 April 1863. He was sent to New Bern, paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received for exchange on 28 May 1863. He “ran away” but was caught and returned to camp on 12 June 1863. Britton was reported present in July – December1863, and May – August, 1864. He was captured at or near Five Forks, Virginia, on or about April of 1865.

Transferred to this company on January 9, 1863, while absent without leave. Reported for duty on August 16, 1863, and brought a certificate proving that 'he had not been able to return until he did.' Mustered in as a Private. Reported present in September - December 1863, and May - August 1864. Promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1864. Captured at Five Forks, Virginia, April 1, 1865. Confined at Pt. Captured at Falling Waters, transfered to Point Lookout. Enlisted in 1st US Volunteers and sent out west for Indian war duty.

JP Speck was my great grandfather. He served with the 49th NC from January 1863 to the end of the war. Prior to January 1863 he served with the 15th NC.

Samuel Spencer Benson was my great-grandfather. He enlisted on 03/18/1862 and was wounded on 03/20/1864 at Bermuda Hundred near Norfolk, Virginia.

He enlisted 24 Mar 1862 in Rowan County, NC as a Private at age 21. He was wounded 1 Dec 1864. Taken POW at 25 Mar 1865 at Fort Stedman, VA. He was inprisoned at Point Lookout POW Camp and survived.

I have some muster records and a photo of William. I am his great-grandson.

Duncan was 21 years, He enlisted at Carthage , Moore County NC in Capt William M Black's Company 49th Regt. on 13 March 1862. His unit was mustered into CSA service at Camp Mangum on 13 May 1862. He has 16 cards in his archival file. His Regimental records record the many fights and hardships he endured. He was wounded by gunfire at [ location unknown ] in the fighting around Richmond Va. He is a patient at Wayside Hosp. #9 at Richmond Va. CMR May thru August finds him at home of medical furlough recovering from his wounds. He is the husband of my 1st cousin 3 times removed Margaret Ann McKay the D/O Sarah Thomas 1816 - 1883.

John C. Thomas was a brother to Wiley F. and my ggguncle. He died of disease at Winder Hospital in Richmond , VA. on 4 August 1864. He like his brother was assigned to the defense of Richmond in the trenches. He is buried at Hollwood Cemetery near his brother in section V-481. I have placed a proper CSA stone for him.

Wiley F Thomas was my gggrandfather. He died of disease at Winder Hospital in Richmond VA. on 12 August 1864. He was assigned to the defense of that city in the trenches. He is buried in Richmond at Hollywood Cemetery in the soldiers section V-701. I have placed a proper stone for him. He has two other brothers buried there. John C. also of Co. D and Robert who was killed at Gettysburg on 3 July 1864 in Picketts charge. He has a memory stone in the Gettysburg memory section. The three stones are in line of sight of each other.

My g-g-g-grandpa. Enlisted in the 49th from Mecklenburg Co. (near Charlotte), NC. Was 5’6” tall. Was in Episcopal Church Hospital, Williamsburg, Va. with ''Ty fever'' sometime while with the 49th. Sick at Petersburg, Va., then sick at home – July-Aug, 1863. Was in Camp Winder (hospital), Richmond, Va. -1864. Moved to Illinois after the war. Killed in a train wreck in 1891 while traveling back to NC, near Statesville. Buried in Bethlthem Methodist Church Cemetary, Iredell Co., NC. My Mom remembers hearing her grandmother talking about hearing her aunts, who were at Hugh''s funeral, tell about trying to hug him in the casket and his head falling back because ''it was broke in the wreck''. His tombstone says: HUGH M MORROW, CO. E, 49 N.C. INF., C.S.A.

Warren was my great grandfather's half brother. Warren died on December 19, 1864 according to family records. The Mecklenburg county Confederate soldier Roster compiled in the 1890's does not list him as killed or dead, however. Warren's brother John Calvin Brown was a corporal in the NC 5th Cavalry, and survived the war. I don't know where Warren is buried. I assume he is among the thousands of unknown confederate dead buried in Petersburg VA.

Robert Grier, a student from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, enlisted as a 3rd Lieutenant at the age of 20. He was commission in Company F, 49th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 21 Apr 1862. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 1 Jul 1862. Died from wounds while serving with Company F, 49th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 17 Jul 1862 at Richmond, Virginia. Burial unknown.

A week after the death of his youngest brother (J. Theodore Hamilton, 28th NC, Co. B) by typhoid fever, Larkin, then 33 and 5'10' tall, enlisted on 22 Mar 1862, and also died typhoid fever on 7 Aug 1862.

Enlisted in Company H, 49th North Carolina Infantry, March 22, 1862, Gaston County. Died of unknown disease at Goldsboro, North Carolina on May 31, 1862. His body was retrieved by his mother, Mary Buchannan Stowe and taken to family cemetery at New Hope Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, North Carolina.

Jeptha Sherrill is my G-G-Grandfather. He was present at Malvern Hill and died shortly afterwards (typhus) on the road back to Petersburg after the Seven Days Battles.

Looking for info on activities of JW Sigman of 'I' company from NC 49th. He was my great grandfather and I have a diary of his from 1864-1865 until his capture at Petersburg and subsequent release in June 1865. Thanks!!
