Previously served (rank and company unknown) in the 10th Battalion N.C. Heavy Artillery. Transferred to this company on May 7, 1863. Wounded in the knee at Morris Island, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, on or about August 25, 1863. Reported present or accounted for through February 29, 1864. Deserted on March 31, 1864. Returned to duty subsequent to April 30, 1864. Captured at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, on or about June 15, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, June 19, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, New York, July 9, 1864. Paroled at Elmira on March 2, 1865, and transferred to the James River, Virginia, for exchange. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, March 7, 1865, with debilitas. Furloughed for thirty days on March 9, 1865. Paroled at Raleigh on May 8, 1865.

1833 – 1917. He was conscripted on Aug 27, 1862. Promoted from 4th Sergeant to 3rd Sergeant on Feb 6, 1863. Nov 1863 shows absent sick at Petersburg VA. On Jan 18, 1864 reduced to Private and reported sick absent. March, 1864, he shows present. He took the oath on May 5, 1865. He was a land owner, farmer and merchant. His general store and grist mill was located in the town of Floyds in the Peters Creek Community. Enlisted in Company C, North Carolina 61st Infantry Regiment on 08 Mar 1862. Mustered out on 12 Dec 1863 at Kenansville. He is my 2nd great grandfather.

James B. Ellington was from Chatham County, NC. From the 61st, he subsequently was elected to the rank of Major and commanded the 8th Batallion of Junior Reserves. He was wounded in battle, recovered but relieved of his command. He then returned to his original company and soon afterward was killed at the Battle of Fort Harrison, VA - September 30,1864.

Simon Peter Van Duyn was my GGGGrandfather. He was a coach maker in Pittsboro, NC. He was killed at Petersburg, VA Sept 9, 1864. He is buried at Pittsboro United Methodist Church in Pittsboro.

My Great Great Grandfather and captain of 61st NC Company E.

He was my great, great uncle on my father's side. Came home from the war in bad health. Brought home his saber and musket. Musket disappeared long ago, but one of my cousins has his saber.

Enlisted as a Private on 15 July 1862 at the age of 19. Captured near Fort Harrison (Chaffin's Farm, VA) on 30 September 1864. Sent to Point Lookout on 5 October 1864. Exchanged on 18 February 1865.

Enlisted as a Sergeant on 28 April 1862 at the age of 25. Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant on 1 January 1863. Promoted to Full 3rd Lieutenant on 15 October 1863. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 30 May 1864. Killed on 30 July 1864 at Petersburg, VA.

Robert was a Volunteer from Martin County,NC. He was 24 years old when he enlisted in Capt.William Lanier's Company [Hill Guards] 59th Regt., NC Infantry [State Troops] Enlisted by Frank A Rhodes. Mustered in at Fort Fisher NC on 15 May 1862 by Capt. W.B. Lanier for 3 years. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of North Carolina. Oct 1864 he is detailed as an Engineer and detailed to report to Col Haris, of General Beauregard's Staff. The 61st was assigned to General Clingmans Brigade, Hokes Division, Army of Northern Virginia. He was 6 foot tall. This unit became the 61st Regiment NC Infantry.

My G-Grandfather,s first name was Shubal, but the Civil War records on line spelled it Shubill.

From Cherokee County, North Carolina. Wounded Pow since battle of Fort Harrison 30 Sept 1864. Maintained in prison hospital till 8 March 1865 per Surgeon Generals orders. Released, and sent home.

Haywood Crouse fought with Company I 61st North Carolina Infantry, and was listed as killed at Fort Harrison by one source, but killed or missing in action in another source. He was my paternal great-great-grandfather.

David Hill was born in 1831 in Ashe (now Alleghany) County, NC, the son of William Hill.Enlisted in Co. I, 61st NC Infantry on 5 Aug 1862 at the age of 31. AWOL 21 Oct 1864. Moved to Mercer County, West Virginia after the war, married Louisa Hayley & fathered at least 5 known children. Date of death unknown.

Meridith Hill was born about 1840 in Ashe (now Alleghany) County, NC, son of William Hill. Enlisted with his brother David Hill in Co. I, 61st NC Infantry on 3 May 1862. Married Elizabeth Clary, moved to Summers County, West Virginia after the war. Brother of my third great grandfather Hiram Hill of Alleghany County, NC.

Martin Holloway was born March 21, 1836 in Ashe County, North Carolina to Isaac and Molly (Pruitt) Holloway. He enlisted in Company I, 61st North Carolina Infantry, May 3, 1862 in Allegheny County, North Carolina. He served with this unit throughout the war and was selected by his company for a place on the Confederate Roll of Honor.

James Mabe was born 25 Feb 1836 in Stokes County, NC. He was the son of Alexander Mabe & Fanny Lawson. James enlisted in Co. I, 61st NC Infantry on 3 May 1862. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandmother Sarah Mabe. James Mabe married Pollie Stamper (date unknown) and died on 6 Feb 1926 in Alleghany County, NC.

Isom Richardson was born in 1835, Ashe, now Alleghany Co., N.C. the son of Alexander L. & Martha Cheek Richardson. He enlisted March 5, 1862 for a period of 3 years at Gap Civil Twp., Alleghany Co. N.C. He saw action at Battery Wagner, Cold Harbor & the siege of Petersburg. He mustered out on Nov. 1, 1864. His younger brother Meredith was also in the same company.

Meredith Richardson was born in 1839 in Ashe, now Alleghany Co., N.C. the son of Alexander L. & Martha Cheek Richardson. He enlisted March 5, 1862 for a period of 3 years at Gap Civil Twp., Alleghany Co. N.C. He saw action at Battery Wagner, Cold Harbor & the siege of Petersburg. He mustered out on Nov, 1, 1864. His older brother, Isom was also in this company.

Simon was born 5 Dec 1838 in Pollocksville, Jones County, NC. He enlisted 20 June 1863 in Co K 61st Infantry. Entered service as 3rd Lt and was promoted to 2nd Lt. Served in Clingman's Brigade, Hoke's Division. He saw action at Batchelder's Creek, Drewery's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Globe Tavern & Fort Harrison where he was captured on 30 Sept 1864. Sent to Fort Delaware where he was released on 4 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog. He died 16 Oct 1903 and is buried in Brocks Family Cemetery in Trenton, Jones County, NC. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.
