4th Virginia Cavalry

Joseph Madison Davis was the son of William Davis (of Job) and Sophia Milstead. They lived in Prince William County near Occoquan. I have his pension application.

This is my great-great-grandfather. He was born 1/4/1834 in Goochland Co., Virginia, the son of James Peyton Randolph & Elizabeth Winston Payne. He enlisted in 4th Virginia Calvary, Troop F (Goochland Light Dragoons) April 25, 1861 in Richmond as a private for a period of 12 months. He was captureed 8/21/1863 and held at Fort McHenry, Maryland for the rest of the war. He was paroled 4/22/1865 near Burkeville, Virginia. He married Virginia Booker Chappell of Amelia Co., Virginia & they had 6 children. He died 2/3/1908 at his home at 'Shannon Hill' in Goochland. His tombstone is Confederate veteran issue - inscribed John W. Randolph, 4th VA CAV, TR. F

Born 1837 in Stafford County Virginia - Died October 16, 1893 and buried at Cedar Hill Cemetary - Baltimore, Maryland. Married to Amanda Tolson. Member of Fourth Cavalry, Company A, formerly known as Prince William Cavalry of Virginia. Enlisted March 13, 1862 at Stafford County in Virginia and was detailed to drive a regimental wagon. Fought in the battle of Gettysburg and was captured on the third day, July 3, 1863, by Union soldiers. Imprisoned at Fort Delaware in Delaware, where he was received between July 7 and 12. Later a prisoner of war at Point Lookout in Maryland, where he arrived on September 26, 1863. Exchanged on May 3, 1864. His name appears on a receipt roll for clothing issued May 9, May 30, and December 31, 1864.

Born 1838. Enlisted 23 April 1861; absent for horse March to April 1863; captured 22 August 1863 Prince William County; Old Capitol Prison; Point Lookout Prison 26 September 1863; exchanged 29 October 1864; paroled 3 May 1865 Fairfax Courthouse. Farmer. Died 1925.

Born in 1826 Culpeper, VA. Wounded during the seige of Richmond in 1865 and died from gangrene in a Richmond hospital 'not far from the White House.'

Napolean was born August 1839, to William S. Aston and Dorinda Taylor Aston, probably in Powhatan County, Virginia. He enlisted as a private in Company E, the Powhatan Troop, 4th Virginia Cavalry, on 23 May 1861 at the Powhatan Courthouse. Powhatan County, Virginia. The term of his enlistment was one year. He was shown as present from June 1861 to February 1862, as absent with leave for March and April 1862, and as absent without leave for May and June 1862. He appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War at Fort McHenry, Maryland, sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia, for exchange by order of Major General Wool, 27 October 1862. The Roll is not dated, but states that Napolean was captured at Shepherdstown on 30 October 1862. Shepherdstown, Virginia, was a major crossing on the Potomac and was the route Lee’s Army of Virginia, which included the 4th Virginia Cavalry, took in withdrawing from Sharpsburg/Antietam in late September 1862. Presumably, Napolean was captured while on picket duty, although by 30 October the 4th had moved south. After the war he married Rosa A. Wilkinson, the daughter of Major Wilkinson of New Kent County, Virginia on 15 October 1866. I have not found any records showing children were born to this marriage, nor do I know what happened to Rosa.

Marcus Lafayette served in Co. E, 4 Virginia Cavalry with his brother William Hicks and his cousin Napolean M. Aston.

William was the son of Frederick Hicks and Maria Price Cox Hicks. He was born about 1837. He served in Co. E, 4 Virginia Cavalry with his brother Marcus Lafayette Hicks and his cousin Napolean M. Aston. He was captured 5 July 1963 at Gettysburg. He was exchanged 18 February 1865. He married Emily Helen Aston in 1859. He died 30 September 1879.

Edward was born in Virginia 25 Dec 1845. His family moved to Chickasaw Co Miss. The 1860 census has him back in Virginia as a student. The name of the school is not given but he is in Powhatan County. He has extended family in the area. When the invasion began, he joined Capt. John F. Lays Co [ Powhatan Troop] on 10 June 1861 at the Powhatan Court House. He is about 16 years old. He is assigned as a Courrier on 26 Aug 1861 and as far as is known served as such for most of the war. He has 15 items in his archival file. Taken as POW [ date not known] He is released at Manchester, Va. on 21 April 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. Battles: Seven Days - Peninsula Campaign, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Brandy Station, Bristo, Appomattox, we are related by marriage. He died 20 Aug 1919 at Houston in Chickasaw Co Mississippi and is buried the that towns cemetery.

Born 10 August 1845; died 29 November 1926. Listing his occupation as ''student at VMI'' he enlisted as a Private on 15 January 1864 at the age of 18. He was taken prisoner on 24 May 1864 at Wilson''s Wharf, Charles City Co., Virginia. On 27 May 1864 he was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland; he was exchanged on 1 November 1864. (He was my 2nd great-granduncle.)

John Thomas McDonald was born May 23, 1845, died Jan. 10, 1929. On 1910 Census he lived in Gainesville, Prince William Co., VA. His wife was Lydia Burgess. I'm searching for his parents.

Shadrack was born 28 Oct 1828 in Tower Hill, Appomattox County Virginia. The 1860 census finds him at that place. He has 24 cards in his archival file. He was enlisted 10 Mar 1862 by Capt. McKinney in Buckingham Co. Va. He was wounded twice, the first time on 13 Nov 1862 circumstances unknown. On 15 May 1864 he suffered a serious gunshot wound to his right leg at the battle of New Market which was in the Valley Campaign. He was given a 40-day furlough. He fought at 2nd Manassas, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and many others. Company K was known as the Black Horse Troop and served in Wickham's Brigade. He died 3 Oct 1887. He is buried at the Lewis - Robinson Family Cem at Appomattox County, Va. We are related thru his first wife Virginia Ann Pankey.
