62nd Virginia Cavalry

OLIVER R. TRIPLETT- Co. A 18th Virginia Cavalry, a son of Job & Sidney Triplett, was born in Randolph County, West Virginia 1844. He enlisted as a Private in Co. A, 18th Virginia Cavalry June 1862. Oliver was present for the Jones-Imboden Raid and the Gettysburg campaign when the 18th Virginia served as a rearguard for Lee's Army until able to cross the Potomac River to the safety of northern Virginia. Oliver was one of 13 members of Company A who were assigned scouting duties to harass Union supply wagons in Randolph County WV. Brother Jasper W. Triplett and first cousin Anthony Triplett were also present. Finding the wagon trains too heavily guarded the Confederates crossed into Tucker County and robbed Wheeler's store near the town of Saint George. The Confederates were followed up the Dry Fork by Union Home Guard dubbed 'The Swamp Dragons'. Oliver's detachment was ambushed March 20, 1864 while sleeping around their campfire at the Sinks of Gandy, eastern Randolph County. Oliver was killed instantly by the Home Guards opening volley, being struck by nine balls. His body was recovered by family. Private Oliver R. Triplett was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Elkins, WV.
