Tobias was a 1st Lieutenant in the 46th Regiment of the VA Infantry Militia during the Civil War. He was captured by the Union 2 Mar 1862 at Mountain Depot, VA. He arrived at Camp Chase near Marietta, OH 14 Apr 1862. Shortly after, he was transferred to Johnson's Island Prison near Sandusky, OH. There, he died 13 Dec 1862 of Typhoid Fever and is buried on the Island in the cemetery for Confederate Soldiers.

My G2-grandfather, Bernard Goldstein, was a Richmond storekeeper, the son of German/French immigrants who had arrived in Baltimore, ca. 1838. He was born in Richmond, around 1840, and enlisted in January 1861, before Virginia seceded, when it became apparent that war was inevitable. Another cousin (or two) also enlisted in Company A--one was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness. Fully 15 of 99 original 1861 soldiers in Company A of the 46th Virginia Light Infantry (Richmond Blues) were Jewish immigrants of German extraction or their children.

THIS REPLACES AN INACCURATE ENTRY FOR THIS VETERAN, DONE 15 yrs ago My 2dGreatGrandfather, Bernard Goldstein, was a Richmond storekeeper, the son of German immigrants who arrived in Baltimore, ca. 1719. He was born in Richmond, around 1838, and enlisted—with his brother Jacob & first cousins, Ezekiel & Isaac Levy—on April 17, 1861, before Virginia seceded when it became obvious that war was inevitable. Wounded and returned to active duty in 1864, he served until discharged at Appomattox. None of the three surviving family members of mine took a parole at Appomattox—were unreconstructed Confederates. Sadly, cousin Isaac was KIA at Petersburg on August 17, 1864 age 21. It’s not widely known that fully 15 of 99 original 1861 soldiers in Company A of the 46th Virginia Light Infantry Blues (Richmond Blues) were Jewish citizens of German extraction.

Enlisted with his brother Isaac, aged 17, and his first cousins, Bernard (my 2dGreat Grandfather) and Jacob Goldstein, on April 17, 1861. He was elected as Lieutenant and promoted to Captain in 1864 after Cold Harbor. He was the commanding officer of Company A at the Battle of the Crater, and was wounded. He returned to duty in August 1864, after his kid brother, Isaac, was killed in action at Petersburg on August 17, 1864, at age 21. Zeke was the highest ranking Jewish officer in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was discharged after the surrender at Appomattox.

Born about 1832. Enlisted 4/21/1861 with the Richmond Light Infantry Blues. Assigned to guard duty through Aug. 13, 1861. Served under ex-VA Gov. Henry Wise. POW Records show he was captured by Burnside's army on Roanoke Island, NC on Dec. 15, 1862. Released on parole 2/21/1862 from Elizabeth City, NC. Again on guard duty in Nov. & Dec. 1862. Detailed mostly on Court Martial Duty in Richmond, Va. On June 17, 1864, he was wounded in the left side of his head by a minie ball, near Petersburg, Va. then sent to hospital. Took Oath of Allegiance on June 21, 1865.

Son of my Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandmother Catharine Talbot Bates. One of six brothers who served the Confederacy. Born 1838 in Halifax County, Virginia. Enlisted March 10, 1862 at Appomattox Depot, Virgina. Died of fever at the Brigade Hospital in Richmond on July 16, 1862.

William had 2 brothers, Jesse and Wilson who were also members of the 46th VA.

Captured Roanoke Island NC paroled 2/1862. Fought NC and SC Charleston seize. Fought Petersburg and with Gen. Lee on road to Appomattox. Index finger shot off April 6. Paroled Appomattox. Any Godsey genealogist???

Richard was born 28 Dec 1844 at Appomattox, Appomattox County Va. The Post Office was at the Court House. He has 22 items in his archival file. He enlisted at the aforementioned county courthouse. He enlisted 29 Feb 1864 in Col Wise's Brigade. Battles: Roanoke Island, Seven Days Battle's, Siege of Charleston Harbor, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, & Appomattox Campaign. He was wounded by gunshot thru the right shoulder, fortunately missing vital organs. He was given a 60-day recovery leave after which he was assigned light duty. He was in line at Appomattox with Col Wise. He died 22 April 1924 near Oakville, Appomattox Co. Va. and is buried in the Moss family cem. in Appomattox. He is the father-in-law of stepson of my 3rd cousin 5 x removed.

John Ellis Jones (1846-1889) lived in the Callands area of Pittsylvania County south of Capt Isaac Hughes Watson, the company commander of Company C 'The Pigg River Invincibles.' Watson's Mill on Tomahawk Creek was the only mill built during the Civil War in the county. A large commisary was there. One October day in 1865, John Ellis walked into his farm. His family had thought he was dead. He was released from the Newport News prison July 1, 1865. He walked home, stopping to work for food. He married Martha Barber, who father died at Guinea Station April 2, 1863. He moved to Grit, Virginia to live with his widowed mother-in-law until he died in 1889.

HE ENLISTED AT DANVILLE, VA. 8-4-1863, CAPTURED AT FARMILLE, VA. 4-6-1865, TOOK OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO U.S. AT NEWPORT NEWS, VA. 6-14-1865

Edward Armistead was my great great great grandfather. According to our family records he was in his forties when he served.

This is one of five family members that served the CSA

Enlisted June 15, 1861 as a Private. His unit was dispatched to participate in the effort to defend the Outer Banks of NC. During the fall of Roanoke Island, Chapman was captured in Feb. 1862. He was released later at Elizabeth City, NC as a part of a prisoner exchange. He never reconnected with the 46th, but was reported to have fought with several other units. He was killed in action on June 9, 1863 at Brandy Station, VA while fighting with Co. A, 35th Battalion of the Virginia Calvary.

Well he enlisted 1861 wounded in left leg in summer of 1861 and was a wagoneer until 1863 when his enlistment ended,he died in Carrol County Virginia 1911

I really know little about John's participation in the ACW but I know Capt. John Henry White was captured by Union troops at the battle of Hatcher's Run, VA , Feb 7, 1865, and was a POW until the end of the war on Apr. 9, 1865. I am interested in learning more and, possibly, locating any photos of Capt. John Henry White. John is my maternal gg grandfather.
