Present 1-12/63, pay stopped for 1 cartridge box $6.00. canvas shoulder strap $1.50, canvas waist belt $1.50, cap pouch, $2.23, lost WIA Middletown 7/15/64. Ab. wounded through 10/31/64. Present 11-12/64 Injured by fall from High Bridge near Farmville 4/7/65. Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65. Farmer, Fancy Hill, Rockbridge Co. Killed by falling tree 2/27/97. Bur. Natural Bridge Baptist Ch. Cem. He received an artificial limb for the wounds he suffered.

Died of pneumonia at Lynchburg VA, April 27, 1862, aged 21 years.

From 'Kaess/Ochiltree/Swartz Family History' (2015) by Brian Paul Kaess. Pvt James Samuel Ochiltree, youngest son of David and Jane (Leech) Ochiltree, b. Aug 13 1844 in Rockbridge Co, VA, KIA Nov 12 1864 at Cedarville, Warren Co., Virginia. He served in Co E, 52nd Regiment, Virginia Inf. He joined the Cavalry, was killed in a charge, at Cedarville, six miles below Front Royal. He may have been serving in a different Virginia cavalry regiment when he was killed. Buried at High Bridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Virginia.

Died of fever July 24, 1862 in Lynchburg VA, aged 23.
