63rd Virginia Infantry

' Company I (1st), (Captain David C. Dunn's Company also known as the Floyd Blues) was organized July 5, 1861 as Co. G. (1st), 50th Virginia Infantry. The company was reorganized April 1,1862 at Abingdon, Virginia and transferred to the 63rd. Part of the company were holdovers and part were recruits. The company was disbanded about January 1863 when some transferred to other companies Captain David C. Dunn, company commander and enlistment officer was elected Lieutenant Colonel on May 10, 1863. The second commander, James R. Deadmore resigned September 5, 1862 per his service record. David Dunn was actively recruiting a Battalion, which he was to command, but plans changed and his units were incorporated into the 63rd. Information from the compiled service record of the 50th Virginia, give the following information about this company's activities for the first year of the war. The company mustered in with the 50th on July 5, 1861 at Abingdon. The first muster roll covers the period July 5 to September 1, 1861, dated September 5, 1861 at Camp Gauley, Nicholas County, Virginia. Had engagement with Yankees under notorious Col. Tyler of fur trade notoriety. It was about 6 o'clock in the morning of August 26 at Cross Lanes when we took their right flank pouring our shot into them. Drove them in utter confusion to the Mountain and capturing many. The killed & prisoners [were] near 130, taking wagons, ambulance 4 horse guns to us prizes. Marched from Camp Jackson, Wytheville via Newbern, Old Sweet Springs, White Sulphur, Lewisburg, Big Sewell Mountain to Gauley River in Nicholas County, distance about 300 miles. The second muster for service while in the 50th, gives the following information in the notes. This muster was for the period September 1 1861 to January 1, 1862, and taken at Dublin Depot. Was in the battle of Carnifex Ferry on September 10, 1861 enemy under Genl. Rosecranz. Suffered no loss in killed or wounded, retreated leaving 26 rifles all our tents & camp equipment. Having such a large number of sick it was impossible to haul or carry them. Company Detailed to guard Blue Sulphur Hosp. on the 18th of Sept. Ordered to White Sulphur Hosp. as a guard at that point on 1 Oct. & remained at that bet (sic) until ordered to Meadow Bluff to drive back some Dutch Cavalry. Returned to White Sulphur Springs & was ordered to Dublin Depot as guard to that point on the 2d of January 1862. We had in charge 3 Yankee prisoners taken at Meadow Bluff. Officers: David C. Joseph Chapman is my 4th great grandfather. He enlisted in the 63rd Virginia Infantry, Company A on March 31, 1862 in Abingdon, Virginia (Washington County). Joseph Chapman resided in Saltville, Smyth, Virginia with his wife Sarah Sallie Phipps and their children. He was in the war for about 3 years.

Whitfield is buried behind Wyndale United Methodist Church, Wyndale, Virginia 1844-1923 He joined the 63rd VA Dec 1863 and served until war's end. He was wounded 9 Aug 1864 in defense of Atlanta. Served in the Tennessee campaign.

Gideon is my maternal GG Grandfather. My paternal GG Grandfather (Robert Harrison) and Gideon signed up the same day, and are buried in the same cemetery.

Charles Wesley Harrington was my gg-grand Uncle. He died of the measles while in the war.

John enlisted 4/6/1862 fought in Missionary Ridge battle in Chattanooga.

Paris Newton Albert, my great grandfather, enlisted on April 15, 1862, at Camp Narrows, Montgomery Co., Virginia. He was 19 years old and married with one child (daughter). He appeared on muster rolls until Tennessee march, then records list him as 'Deserted'.He was a grandson of Rev. War Soldier, Jacob Allen Albert. After Civil War, he and wife had 12 more children. He was a farmer. He died in 1920, at age 77.

William Ratcliffe Altizer enlisted on 15 April 1862 in Abingdon, VA. He fought at the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 - 20 September 1862 and in particular at the fights for Horeshoe Ridge and Snodgrass Hill. He died on 01 December 1863 in Atlanta, GA at Fairgrounds Hospital #2 and is buried in Atlanta, GA in Oakland Cemetary.

Jasper M. Kinser was born in Carrol County VA in 1843. He enlisted on April 15, 1862 in Peterstown, VA. He was captured on July 14, 1864 at Marietta, OH and was sent to Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL.

Flemming Lambert was my great, great grandfather. A farmer and 'woodchopper' from Montgomary, (West) Virginia, he was mustered in on April 15, 1862 at the age of 22 for 3 years. By Dec. of 1862 he was listed as a POW of the North. On Nov. 15, 1863 he was paroled and ordered not to travel south of the Ohio River. He later moved to Nebraska with his brother William, married and raised a family. He died on July 21, 1920 at the age of 80 and is buried in the Oxford, Nebraska Cemetery.

Joseph Houston Wassum, 2nd Lt. Co. H, 63rd VA Inf. was my GG Grandfather. He was from Smyth County VA and lived to be 91 yrs old. He died in 1922.

Died: 15 July 1864, in Atlanta GA. Died in hospital of fever.

Enlisted in Co. G (1) 50th VA inf reg June 15, 1861 for a period of 3 years by Capt. Dunn at Abington,VA. He was in several Battles in western VA (Kessler Cross Lanes, Carnifex Ferry and the Kanawha Valley campaign. The company was reorganized May 1, 1862 and became Co.I (1) 63rd VA inf reg and saw action in VA, NC, TN, and GA. He was WIA Sept 20, 1863 (right arm shot off) at the battle of Chicamauga, furloughed 60 days and returned to duty Aug 31, 1864. (sources; 50th VA inf by John Chapala, 63rd VA inf by Jeff Weaver, service records. After the War, about 1870, he moved his family from Wytheville, VA to Kanawha Co. (Occupation); farmer and carried the mail on horseback; Died Dec. 24, 1927 at Blakely, WV., buried on his farm at Laural Fork, Kanawha Co. (death certificate)

James Polk Allison Private 63rd VA Inf. Co. K

This was my great, great, great grandfather. He enlisted as a Private on May 6th 1861 with the CSA 63rd Virginia Infantry Company F. In August of 1964 he transferred to Company K where he was promoted to 1st Corporal. From February 1865 until June of 1865 he was a P.O.W. at Point Lookout. He survived the was and passed away of Cancer on August 2nd 1912.
