1st Alabama Artillery

Not certain of the division or the company. He enlisted with Gunter's Battalion at Paint Rock, Marshall Co., Alabama December 1862. He joined Ward's Light Artillery in the Ward-Cruze Battery in Truehart's Battalion. He served around Shubata, Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama where he was discharged in November 1863 due to disability suffered in battle. He was my great-grandfather.

John enlisted at Montgomery Ala. 21 Mar. 1862 in Co. B 2nd Alabama Calarly. His horse was killed and he was transferred to the 1st Alabama Artillery. He was the husband of my 2nd cousin Martha Ann Thomas whose line goes to Tristram Thomas of Maryland 1666.

He enlisted 12-26-1862, disch. 04-26-1865, buried in Shady Grove Cem., George Cty., Ms.

Im looking for details about my family. My GGrandfather enlisted and was sent originally to Talladega where he was assigned to Co D 1st AL Arty. Unit served at Mobile and I dont have much more than a brief detail of the unit history for his service. Any Info would help. I may also have other relatives in the unit named John, John Jackson and Thomas J Coker. I am directly related to John Jackson. Roster has a John, which is probably an uncle and a Jackson who I believe is John Jackson and possibly another relative named Thomas.

I'm putting this in for a friend of mine. James enlisted as a Pvt. March 7, 1861 in Verbena, Chilton Co., AL. He was captured at Ft. Morgan Aug. 23, 1864 & was recieved at Elmira, NY. Ovt. 8, 1864. He was released June 14, 1865. He was born Fe. 23, 1843 in Verbena, AL.

Jonas B. Little served with the 1st Alabama Artillery Battalion from 1863 to 1865 at Fort Morgan and the defenses of Mobile Bay. He was born in 1821 in Union Co., SC. His father, Amos Bingham Little, moved his family from SC to Butler Co., Alabama in 1822 and established a farm there. Jonas is my gggrandfather.

Official Confederate documents show that James A McCluskey enlisted March 6, 1861 in Auburn and was sent to Fort Morgan, which guarded Mobile Bay. On Aug 23, 1864, the Union Navy commanded by Admiral David Farragut attacked and captured Fort Morgan. James and other prisoners were apparently sent on a Union vessel to New Orleans and then to the infamous Union prison in Elmira NY where he remained until exchanged on Feb. 20, 1865. Elmier was by far the worst Union prison. Over 25% of the Confederate prisoners died there. There is evidence that his younger brother, William Franklin McCluskey, only 17 at the time, was also at Fort Morgan in the same unit and suffered the same fate. William (b. May 3, 1847) enlisted Dec. 29, 1863. He was released from Elmira on June 19, 1865. James is my distant cousin.

William, from Tallassee, enlisted at 17 on Dec. 29, 1863 in Montgomery. He is the younger brother of James A McCluskey of Co. E. He was assigned to Fort Morgan at Mobile Bay and was captured by Union forces on Aug. 23, 1864 along with his brother. He was sent to New Orleans and then on the the terrible Union prison at Elmira NY. He survived that horrible experience and was paroled on June 19, 1865.

David was born in Newberry District SC. He enlisted 25 June 1863 in Co F 1st Battalion Ala Infantry which was stationed at Fort Morgan, Mobile Ala. His records show that for a short time he was attached to Co B 17th Ala. Infantry and on 13 June 1864 he was paid $100 bounty. He was captured at Fort Morgan and sent to as POW to Elmira, NY. arriving on 8 Oct 1864 he died of chronic diarrhoea. He was about 38 years old. Buried in grave # 887 at Woodlawn Cem. Elmira, NY . His effects were a pair of shoes and a hat. The Camp Commander Col Hoffman bragged that he had killed more rebels than any front line commander. We are related by marriage.

George Washington Tucker was born in 1827 in Pike County, Alabama and died December 9, 1864 at Elmira Military Prison, Elmira, New York. Buried in Plot Number 1175 at Woodlawn National Cemetery. He was the son of Hiram Tucker and Catherine Hendry Tucker. He married Mildred Margaret Bradley. One of the unfortunate victims of the Elmira Prison Camp in NY. He was the 13th of 15 children. Mildred Margaret Bradley's, George's wife, pension application shows the couple marrying the 10th of Dec 1849, probably in Montgomery Co. where Mildred was born 24 Dec 1831. George died in the Elmira Prison camp the 9th of Dec 1864, leaving a grieving wife and 6 small children from the ages of 14 to 2 years old. He and his people were members of the Fairview Church of Christ in Upper Crenshaw Co. AL. His brother, Ira J. Tucker and wife, Priscilla A. Dendy Tucker, gave the land for the church and cemetery. George was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY and his wife was buried at the Fairview Church Cemetery. According to the Lowndes Court House by Mildred Brewer Russell, pg. 175, George was one of 2999 fatalities at the Elmira Prison Camp and was in the 1st Alabama Infantry, Co. F. Several men in the 1st Alabama Infantry died there. Decendent, John R. Tucker Sr. is the grave sentry for him and is honored each year by the Sons of Confederate Veterans Buffalo Guards Camp-1975.
