6th Alabama Infantry

I only know that isiah served in the 56th ala. entered at the walker co.court house in jasper ala. lived in walker co.about 4 miles west of sipsi on a farm.

He later became part of the artillery battery formed from 2 companies of the 6th. Paroled at Vicksburg but rejoined the fight with his battery around Atlanta.

Enlisted on 1/29/1863 at Westbay, FL as a Private. On 1/29/1863 he mustered into "C" Co. FL 11th Infantry He Resigned on 5/29/1864 (Resigned due to illness) Promotions: 2nd Lieut 4/26/1863 (As of Co. F) Intra Regimental Company Transfers: 4/26/1863 from company C to company F He also had service in: AL 6th Infantry

James Newell Lightfoot was promoted to Colonel of 6th Ala Infantry on May 07, 1863. He began his service on May 11, 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant, Co. A, 6th AL. Infantry. The company was mustered into service as Company A of the Sixth Alabama Infantry regiment, although the designation was later changed to B. On Nov 30, 1861, he became Captain, Co. A, 6th AL. Infantry.

PVT. George B. Stone enlisted May 5, 1861 and served in Company E. At the battle of Seven Pines he was wounded and died as the result of his wounds several days later on June 9, 1862. He is buried at his homeplace

Severely woulded in hip at Battle of Chancellorsville. Lost right arm later at Battle of Spotsylvannia Court House. Enlisted at Enterprise, ALA.

Killed in action May 31, 1861 at 7 Pines on the extreme right of the regiment as they were deployed at a right angle to engage the enemy who were enfilading the right flank . As they charged through ankle and knee deep water and chest high briars , many brave souls in his company including Captain Bell became casualties being mortally wounded and killed outright. He was ton and interred at Hollywood Cemetery two days later .

David's archival records have not been found. His name appears on a List of vol's belonging to the 'Columbia Blues' a military company located at Columbia, Henry County Alabama.List is dated 24 May 1860. His name is # 25 on the list.

Enlisted Henry County, Alabama, 1862. Seriously wounded at Boonesboro, 1862, wounded at Gettysburg, 1863, wounded and captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse 1864 and paroled home. Moved to Texas 1895, Died in Smith County, Texas in 1924.

William was born December 29, 1829 in SC and moved with his parents to Henry County AL in 1837. Enlisted in the 6th Alabama on September 1, 1862. Federal Prisoner of War records show that he was captured April 3, 1865 at Richmond, Virginia, while retreating to Appomattox after the Siege of Petersburg. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, June 10,1865 upon taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. He returned to Henry County but later moved to Hartford, Geneva County, AL where he died on January 31, 1907.

Served from 1 Sept 1862 to 13 Oct 1862, released from Richmond, VA hospital, returned to Gordon, AL and later joined Co. A, 11th Alabama State Troops (Home Guard) til end of War.

He's my 2nd Great Grandfather. He enlisted in Company B 'Henry Greys' on March the 7th 1862 and he served until May of 1864 when he was captured at the Spotsylvania Courthouse in Virginia and was sent to Point Lookout Prison Camp in Maryland on May the 23rd 1864. He was then moved to the Prison Camp in Elmira New York on July the 6th 1864 where he remained until June the 23rd 1865 when he took the oath and was released.

The first company organized in Henry County Alabama, the 'Henry Greys,' was a company raised by Alexander C. Gordon of Abbeville, Alabama who became its captain. The organization was perfected on May 11, 1861. On May 16, 1861 the company was mustered into service as Company A of the Sixth Alabama Infantry regiment, although the designation was later changed to B. He only served about 6 months as he was 50 years old. He returned home to serve with the Henry Mounted Rebels, which was a Home Guard outfit.

Mike enlisted in March, 1861 and returned home in March, 1862. He later served in the 6th Ala Cavalry. He survived the war and is buried in Judson Baptist Cemetery in Henry County, Ala.

Jun 23, 1843 – Jan 24, 1863. He enlisted on Mar 3, 1861 and died Jan 24, 1863 from his wounds. He was one of the seven wounded at Fredericksburg and taken to Chimborazo hospital in Richmond where he died from his wounds. At this time, no hospital records can be found on how he died. 1836 – 1925. Enlisted May 16, 1861 under the old company A. He stood 5’ 9 ½”, dark eyes, black hair and a dark complexion and lived in Henry County Ala. He was sick and in the Howard Grove Hospital in Richmond on Oct 30, 1862 and was transferred to the Chimborazo Hospital on Dec 11,1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville May 1863. Promoted from private to sergeant on May12, 1864 by Captain Green. He was captured at Petersburg on Apr 2, 1865 and arrived at City Point on Apr 4, 1865. He was released from Point Lookout Md on Jun 15, 1865 after taken the Oath of Allegiance. He migrated from Henry County Alabama after the civil war to Jones County Mississippi. Parents: • David Turner Melvin 1813 – 1902. Samuel D Coin had four brothers and a brother-in-law in Confederate Service: James, 6th Kentucky Cavalry. Joseph Thomas and John, 34th Georgia Infantry. Spear Fort Kuykendall, 15th Northwest Arkansas Infantry. Fought at the Battle of Seven Pines in Virginia. Lost part of a leg and a finger.

George D. Conner was my GG grandfather. He enlisted with his brother Seth in 1861 in Montgomery, ALA aged 13. He is buried in Magnolia cemetery in Augusta, Ga. next to his brother.

William S Walker was the son of Rufus Walker of Milton Autauga COunty Ala. ( 38th Al Infantry) and the brother of George W Walker, (died Nov,1862 Columbus Ky, disease) and Jessie Green Walker ( 38th Alabama Inf.Co g.)

Seth David Conner was my GG uncle. He joined the 6th Alabama with his bother George in Montgomery at the age of 15 in 1861.

Harnon was born in 1841 in Coffee County Alabama, the Post Office was at Elba. He was 19 when he enlisted at Elba on 20 Sept. 1861. Note to researchers he has 20 cards in his archival record, but all are not his as a Henry Donalson is comingled. At one point Henry signed his initials as J.H.C. he is probably a relative. Harmon saw action in many battles including. Seven Pines, 1st Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania C.H., He was wounded at the 3rd battle of Winchester fought 19 Sept. 1864. This fight was also known as the battle of Opequon Creek. He died in 1902 in Braggs, Lowndes County, Ala. He was the father-in-law of the wife of my 4th cousin 2 x removed.

Roland J. Greene enlisted 1861/08/02 in Clarke County Al. Served in Company C and I. Family history said He was captured (Place & date unknown) and died at a POW camp on Long Island, NY. Maybe Elmira (camp Chemung River) POW camp. No other information. His Brother, My Great Grand Father Thomas Barney Greene ( Who was married with a son, My Grand Father) then enlisted in the 6Th Alabama Cavalry, Company H, to avenge Roland's death. Thomas survived the War.

This was my Grandfather. He was born 100 years before I was born. He died in 1928 at ninety one years of age.

Hamilton enlisted in [Old Co C] which became Co I at Clifton, Ala on 11 May 1861 and mustered in at Montgomery on 16 May. He was declared too young according to the Conscription Act and was honorably discharged on 8 Aug 1862. Whether he reentered service. is not known. He is my 6th cousin 3 x removed on my Thomas line.

Winslow Dudley Hill born 17 May 1828 Alabama Died: 25 Dec 1913 Alabama. Served with 6th Regiment, Alabama Infantry as a First Lieutenant in Confederate Army.HILL, Benjamin W. D. (1st Lieutenant, Company K, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment)

Joseph was born 6 June 1840 in Bridgeport, Jackson Co. Ala. He enlisted 30 April 1861 at Bridgeport in [Old Co. F.] which became Co. K. He has 20 cards in his archival file. Enlisted by a W.T. Gunter. a Capt. Bell and a Capt. Isaac F Culver were commanding the company. Assigned to Rhode's & O'Neal and Battle's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Battles fought were many including, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Boonsboro, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Pennsylvania Campaign, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Valley Campaign under Gen. Jubal Early, Winchester and Cedar creek. He was captured near Petersburg, probably at Fort Mahone. Sent to City Point and released 21 June 1865 after swallowing the "Yellow Dog" Of the 2109 on the rolls, 400 were killed, 243 died of disease and as many were wounded disabled. We are related thru a distant marriage on my Chapman line.

Walter W. Cox enlisted at Montgomery in the Loachapoka Rifles. He served in Company 'L' and survived the war. He relocated to Texas and is buried in the Smith Cemetary west of Gatesville.

Joseph was initially part of Loachapoka Rifles and later attached to Company L of the 6th Alabama. He was severely wounded (''shot to pieces'') losing a leg after the unit was sent to join the Army of Northern Virginia and returned home sitting out the remainder of the war. He married and drew a pension as a disabled veteran for the rest of his days in the Horseshoe Bend area of Alabama.

Enlisted May 15, 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama. Transfered to Company-G, 15th Georgia Inf. on Dec. 7, 1862. (15th Ga. Inf, Benning''s Brigade, Hood''s Div., Longstreet''s Corps, A. or N. Virginia (R.E. Lee). Captured on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa. Paroled on Feb. 18, 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Received for exchange on James River, Feb. 21, 1865.
