John enlisted 11 Sept. 1862 at Huntsville, Ala. by Capt. G.R Kimbrough for three years. His unit moved to Mobile, Ala, in Jan. : Feb. /62 Pensocola Florida : March /62 Corinth Miss. and June 1862 to Tupelo Miss. John died 5 May 1862 at Columbus,Missippi. Settlement was filed 16 March 1862 by J.L.C. Danner. He had no effects but was due pay from 28th Feb. & $5.47 cents from clothing acct.

Enlisted as a Pvt on Aug 12, 1861 in Summit (Blount Co.) Promotion date unknown. Captured Nov 25, '63 at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. POW in Louisville, Ky until 12/6/63, transfered to Rock Island, Ill. on 12/9/63. Was on POW rolls there (last known date 11/7/64). Was noted to have a fine scribe and served as a secretary. After the war he was postmaster at Red Hill, AL and the last before it was made a rural route. Died there Jan 2, 1932 living 90+ years.

Joined the 19th Alabama on 14 Aug 1861 when the regiment was organized. Hiram Marsh was killed in action on the first day 06 Apr 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. A muster roll after the battle indicates he suffered head and neck wounds.

Enlisted 8/12/61 in Summit (with relative and future 1st Sgt. Benjamin R. Berry) against his fathers (John Neisbit Nesmith, a Union loyalist) wishes. From the Record of Events of Co 'B' dated 8/14/61-10/31/61, while quartered at Camp Bradford (Blue Springs) Huntsville-'The company has suffered much from sickness having had over seventy cases of measles besides mumps, pneumonia, typhoid fever, all of which cases have been treated without the loss of a single case.' During the companys winter quartering at Camp Memmemger (Mobile) one of these illnesses caught up with the Pvt as he died 2/6/62 of 'disease'.

James is my 2nd Cousin 3x removed. He enlisted 12 Aughst at Pinson Ala. He entered as 1st Sergt and was elected to 2nd Lt. in Co C 19th Ala, Infantry. He was wounded in the face at Shiloh on 6th of April 1862. He was with 2nd Army Corps , Army of the Mississippi.

James was my Great Great Grandfather, he was the only Brother out of 4 to survive the war. Born 1841- died 1878 of Pnuemonnia. He enlisted with his Brother Joeseph in the same company togather. He had 2 other Brothers in the 10th Ala, Infantry. Burried in the Garner Cemetary in North Gadsden Alabama.

Joeseph joined with his Brother James from Gadsden Alabama. He was promoted to Corpral and was the Company Commanders right hand man. He went home on medical furlow and died at home in Alabama sometime in 1862 and is burried in the Garner Cemetary in North Gadsden.

Later promoted to Major in Brigadier General Terry's Brigade.

George was in the Battles of Murfreeboro, Chickamauga, Gettysburg and Missionary Ridge (or Lookout Mountain)where he was wounded and taken prisoner

My Great Great Grandfather.

Enlisted 12 August 1861 at Kirk's Grove, Alabama. Slightly wounded at Murfreesboro 31 December 1863. Died 2 September 1863 @ Empire House Hospital on Whitehall Street in Atlanta. Burial in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta. Served with his two brothers who also died in the war.

John O. Jackson enlisted in Co. E, 19th Alabama Infantry on August 12, 1861. He died from disease in a CSA camp in Huntsville, AL on October 16, 1861. He was born on December 17, 1834 to Solomon H. Jackson and Eunice 'Eunicy' Clements Jackson. John was married to Atharilla Elizabeth Roberts Jackson in 1855 and they had four children. John was my great, great grandfather.

He enlisted in the Cherokee Guards (later Co. E) at Kirk's Grove, Cherokee County, on 12 August 1861. He was slightly wounded in the face at Shiloh. He was in the rifle pits at the base of Missionary Ridge, where he was captured in November 1863. Ill with TB in the lungs and bowels (hospitalized in June 1864 per US army medical records), he died in the hospital at Rock Island Prison on 25 Dec 1864. He is buried in Grave 1710 at Rock Island Confederate Cemetery. He was married to Eve Amanda (Griffin) in 1856. He is my great-grandfather.

Elias served with the 19th from august 1861 till his capture at missionary ridge where he was sent to Rock Island ill. as a prisoner of war

Williamson, David Neville, Corporal Company E, 19th Alabama Infantry Enlisted as a Corporal in Company E, 19th Alabama Infantry at Dalton, Georgia in February 1863 at age 14 (born April 7, 1848). He was wounded in the right arm at Jonesborough, Georgia in August 1864. He was sent home to recover from his wounds. He later returned to the company at Tupelo, Mississippi. He served in the Carolinas and at Bentonville, North Carolina. No further records. This was Samuel Milford Jemison Howard, born Jan. 9, 1838 in South Carolina, died Jan. 24, 1916, buried at Walker's Chapel Cemetery in Fort Payne (Collbrand), DeKalb Co., AL. Samuel M. J. Howard. Captured at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, November 25, 1863. Promoted Captain [January 11, 1864]. Released at Johnson’s Island, Ohio, June 13, 1865.

Silas Alexander Howard, born about 1843 in South Carolina, died May 5, 1862, buried at Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, Lowndes Co., MS. Died at Citizens' Hospital, Columbus, Mississippi May 5, 1862 of diarrhea. Rank: Private

John Hamilton joined the 19th Alabama in August of 1861. He served as a teamster, blacksmith, and carpenter at various times. He was severely wounded in the leg at Murfreesboro on December 31, 1863.

4th cousin of mine. Died of measles 3 June 1862 at the Confederate Army Hospital in Granada, Mississippi. Served with his brothers Henry Sims Hartline, Peter Lawrence Hartline, and Robert Hilmon Hartline.

4th cousin of mine. Suffered a head wound in the Peach Orchard at Shiloh, TN, 4 p.m., 6 April 1862, and was captured the next day. POW'd in Illinois until released in a prisoner exchange. Said to have told his grandchildren he witnessed the death of Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnson hours before his own injury. Died in 1912 and is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN. Served with brothers George Washington Hartline, Peter Lawrence Hartline, and Robert Hilmon Hartline.

4th cousin of mine. Captured 23 Sept 1864 at Jonesburo by Sherman's Army after evactuation of Atlanta. Sent to Camp Douglas in Illinois. Released 17 June 1865. Died in 1890. Buried at Davis Cemetery, northern Cherokee County, Alabama. Served with his brothers Henry Sims Hartline, George Washington Hartline and Robert Hilmon Hartline.

Daniel, John Silas, Private Company H, 19th Alabama Infantry Enlisted as a Private in Company H, 19th Alabama Infantry on an unknown date. No further records. Born: June 23, 1844 Died: March 1929 Buried: unknown Married: Intha Nancy Roberts Children: unknown Occupation: unknown

According to records was paroled at Greensboro, NC May 4, 1860. Died 1922 in Cherokee County, Alabama.

William enlisted as a private in Company H August 14, 1861. On April 26, 1865, General Joseph E. Johnston finally surrendered his army to General William T. Sherman. An account by a contemporary, G. W. Cahoon, in 1907, attests that William was captured at Reseca, Georgia and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp. At the end, only William, now a first lieutenant, and 75 out of the original 900 men in his unit were left to accept parole in Salisbury, North Carolina, on May 2, 1865, and start the long trek home.

James was 51 when he enlisted at Corinth. He has two CMR's in his archival file. Enlisted 4 Mar 1862. He was wounded 20 Sept 1863 at Chickamauga. He survived the war. He died in Texas 28 April 1865. It is believed his death was hastened by the wounds of war. He was married to Amanda Wheeler.

John M. Whitmire enlisted in August of 1861 for a period of 60 days. When his time was up, he re-enlisted for a period of 3 years or the war. He was captured at Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga in November of 1863. He was a prisoner at Rock Island federal prison camp in Illinois for about 11 months. In October 1864, John signed on to serve in the Western territories as a 'galvanized Yankee' under the stipultation that he would not have to go south and fight his fellow Confederates. After release from the Third Regiment, US volunteers, John returned to Northeast Alabama and married Mary Hamilton. They lived on Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama. He is buried at Bankhead Cemetery in Mentone, Alabama.

Williamson, Thomas Jefferson, Captain Company H, 19th Alabama Infantry Enlisted as a Private in Company H, 19th Alabama Infantry on August 28, 1861 in Huntsville, Alabama at age 17. He was promoted to Lieutenant and Captain in the company on unspecified dates. He was wounded in Battle near Atlanta, Georgia on an unknown date. William G. Hudson enlisted for 1 year in Company C, 7th Alabama Infantry. Was mustered out at Corinth, Miss. At that time, he rejoined the army, entering the 19th Alabama, Company I, for three years and remained till the breakup occurred. He took part in the Murfreesboro and Chickamauga battles and in many minor engagements and in May, 1864, while at Cassville, Georgia, was captured and shipped to Rock Island Prison, Illinois, and kept in a Federal military prison until the end of the war. He reached home in June of 1865 and resumed the work of the farm. See my home page for his genealogy.

From Blount Co. AL, fought at Shiloh, was injured, served to the end of the war. Moved to Hamilton Co. TX in 1874.

From Blount Co. AL. Was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, was hospitalized at Corinth, MS where he died and was buried in 1862. He was a brother of James Daniel Blakely.

Jabe Burgess joined the 19th at Dalton Ga.in the winter of '63.he was shot in the neck during the Battle of Ezra Church on 28 July 1864,he was furloughed until the end of the war,when he was discharged from service.he married Mary Ann Hartline in 1870,her Father George Washington Hartline served in Co.C 19th Alabama Infantry.Jabe died february 2 1926 from his wound that he recieved at Atlanta becoming infected.

According to the Census of Confederate Soldiers (1907), William Burgess enlisted as a Private on August 9, 1861, in Huntsville, Alabama, joining Company K of the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He served throughout the Civil War until 1865, ultimately surrendering and receiving parole at Salisbury, North Carolina. Historical accounts note that the 19th Regiment began the war with roughly 650 soldiers, but only 76 remained by the time of its surrender in 1865.

My g-g-granduncle was born Hall County, Georgia June 1840. Enlisted Blountsville, Alabama June 1861. Wounded at Shiloh and served as company medic for remainder of the war.

My g-g-grandfather was born Lumpkin County, Georgia 12/25/1843. Enlisted Ripley, Tennessee 8/9/1862. Wounded 9/20/1863 at Chickamauga and captured in August 1864 during Atlanta Campaign. Spent remainder of the war at Camp Chase, Ohio.

Thomas Webster Scruggs is my great grandfather. He joined Aug 12 1861 in Blountsville AL and served till surrender in 1865.
