James M. Crutchfield served with Company A 20th Regiment, AL Infantry from 1864 to May 1865. Granted 'His Parole of Honor' (Oath of alligence) 16 May 1865 at Columbus MS.

Enlisted under the walnut trees at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church in Dallas Co. Captured at Vicksburg and paroled. Fought at Missionary Ridge and through the Atlanta campaign. Promoted to Captain. Present at Battle of Franklin and fought covering Hood's retreat from Nashville. With the Army at Bentonville, S.C. when surrendered. Out of 2000 that enlisted in 1861, about 165 were left. Came home to north Dallas Co. Married and farmed. Had 3 sons. Was my great grandfather.

Nimrod Asa Argo never returned from war and it is unknown what happened to him.

Simon, of Randolph County, enlisted in Selma on Sept. 11, 1861. He was captured by Union forces in the famous Battle of Newton Station MS on April 10, 1863 but was paroled a few days later at Demopolis. He was again captured by Gen. Sherman's forces at Jonesboro GA on Sept. 6, 1864 and sent to Federal prisons in Louisville and Chicago. He was released in June, 1865 and returned to Randolph County. Simon is a son of my great-great-great-grandfather througn my mother's lineage.

William was born in Bibb Co. Alabama 12 Sept 1845. He enlisted Apr 1862 as Pvt. In Co B 20th Alabama Infantry. He was captured twice, once on 3 July at Vicksburg and paroled on the 8th. He found himself a POW again when he was captured at Nashville on 16 Dec 1864 and sent to Military Prison at Louisville, Ky. He was forwarded to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Ill and paroled 20 June 1865. He died in Rusk Co. Trxas in 1921. He was the husband of my 5th cousin 4 x removed.

Robert was born in South Carolina. in 1835. Family moved to Bibb County Alabama. He is found as Robert McCuley in the archival records. He enlisted in Bibb County on 9 Sept 1861 at about 26 years old for the war. 15 April 1962 he is absent from his regiment, sick in Knoxville. On 17 Dec 1864 he is taken as POW near Franklin, Tenn. Sent to Louisville Military Prison and on to Camp Douglas, Ill, located near Chicago. In 14 July 1865 his is a patient in the USA Hospital at Camp Douglas. He survived the war and died 9 Feb 1918 at Garnsey, Bibb Co. Ala. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. His first wife Mary Ann Pritchett died 6 May 1890 and he remarried Phyllis Marsella Norwood. He is buried at Old Blue Creek Cemetery, In Jefferson Co. Ala.

His death date is listed as November 24, 1863. He enlisted in 1861/62.

'Bud' George 'Her daddy (Levi) was shot during the Civil War around Shiloh, TN. Big Mamma said he died with a Yankee musket ball in him.' Married Mary Jane Calfee (Caffee) 2-Feb-1869. Children: Rufus Manuel, Kathrene 'Katie', 'Drannie', Mamie L, John D, Bessie, Arthur, Irene.

Private Wesley Nichols enlisted 20th Ala Inf. on 10 Sep 1861. In Perry Co. AL by Lt. Shafrard for duration of the war. Absent on sick furlough from 9Nov to 29 Nov. Detained by sickness. Was on muster roll of 20th Ala Inf. from Sept10 to Dec1, 1861. There is another Ala. record of a Wesley Nichols that enlisted in Montgomery in Co. I of the 20th Ala Inf. Wesley lived in Pike Co. It may be possible somebody copied Perry Co. for Pike Co....

James Rhone served in 20th Alabama, Co. F, CSA Infantry. Died as POW in Rock Island,Ill. Buried in Grave #539. Nat'l Archives records identifies grave number and location as 'South of Prison Barracks'. Nat'l Archives records note enlisted 'for the War' on Oct. 3rd, 1861 in Perry County, Alabama by Lieut. Spencer. Archives state wounded at Champion Hill (Vicksburg Battle) and noted as captured May 16th, 1863 and a Vicksburg POW. Sent to Memphis and then Camp Morton, Indiana & Fort Delaware, Delaware where he was exchanged on July 4, 1863. Taken prisoner again at Battle of Lookout Mountain (Missionary Ridge) on Nov. 25th and another record as 27th, 1863. Noted in field hospital in Bridgeport, Al in Dec. , 1863. Sent by train and Archives show him as POW at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky where he was sent to Rock Island on Dec. 1 and arrived Dec 23, 1863. Records note he died Feb. 20th, 1864 of Variola (smallpox). 'Rebels At Rock Island' -McAdams-Northern Illinois Press.- documents outbreak of smallpox at Louisville in Dec.'63 among CSA prisoners from Chattanooga, but infected prisoners sent on to Rock Island without notification of infection sent. Major outbreak in Winter 1863-64 and hundreds of Confederate POW's died. (Nat'l Archives copies in Richard Rhone file)

Jonathan Slaton served in the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company F. This company was recruited from Perry and Bibb Counties in Alabama and it is uncertain why Jonathan would have gone so far from home to enlist. However, his enlistment is confirmed by several sources. First, his name clearly appears on the muster roll of the 20th. Secondly, his pension and disability application reflects the same. Finally, his headstone shows this as well. On June 22, 1863, he was wounded during the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi by the explosion of a shell. Fragments of the shell struck him in and below the left eye, causing the loss of sight in that eye. This occurred while he was serving in Company F of the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Edmund W. Pettus. Pettus’ brigade was serving as a part of the 3rd Brigade under the command of Brig. General S.D. Lee. Lieutenant Uriah B. Dobbins attested to the wound.

Paw Billy was Born Feb.11, 1846 in Perry County Alabama, He inlisted in the 20th Al Inf. Co. F at Brushcreek Alabama in 1862 at the age of 16. He fought all the way till the surrender of the 20th at Sailsburry N.C., then made his way home. When he got home he found out that his mother had died in 1863 and his Father had remarried. He died Oct. 7 1928 and is buried at Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery in Hale County Alabama next to his wife and very near his Children.

John Brewer (b) abt 1830 son of Nathan and Charity Brewer, lived in Bibb County, Alabama enlisted on 9th of Sept 1861 in Montevallo, Shelby County, AL, married Martha Tune, he died the 7th of June in 1863 at the Battle of Vicksburg.

Henry Cost received his commission on September 16, 1861 and resigned his commission on February 27, 1862 because of ill health. He joined company A 2nd AL cav. on September 8, 1862. He was listed on attached service as a wagon master On March 22, 1864 he was listed as shot in the ankle. He received a certificate of disability on December 7, 1864

My 2nd Great Grandfather, A.J.Cross, was killed on December 17th, 1864 during rear guard action of General John Bell Hood's retreat from Nashville. The retreat was so rapid that his body was left on the battle field and never recovered. We assume he's buried in the mass grave at Mt.Olivet cemetery in Nashville. We have no record of proof of his burial.

J. W. Harris enlisted and was designated First Sergeant of Company G in September 1861. He took part in the first battle of Port Gibson and the battle of Baker's Creek; was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 14 April 1862 on promotion of Captain Davis; survived the siege and was captured at the surrender of Vicksburg on 4 July 1863; was paroled on 8 July; took part in the battle of Missionary Ridge; was promoted to First Lieutenant on the resignation of Captain deShazo during the Dalton-to-Atlanta campaign; was promoted again after Captain Nave was wounded at Marietta; was captured at Tupelo, Mississippi, in December 1864; took part in the battle of Nashville and the last fight at Bentonville; and was paroled 29 May 1865 at Talladega, Alabama, with rank of Captain. After the revolution, he returned to his wife in Alabama and raised seven children while working as express agent, telegraph operator, and hotel manager. His wife, Martha Josephine Wilson, died in 1881; he remarried Nannie Jones and raised two more sons.
